44 Igoumenitsa is the capital of the ancient region of Thesprotia and the starting point of the Egnatia Road which runs to the Turkish border. It is a disembarkation point for ferries from Italy, Corfu and Patras and one of the fastest growing cities in Greece. Travelling south from Igoumenitsa you’ll pass the fishing village of Plataria with its famous long beach and 12 klms later Syvota. Parga is built around one of the most beautiful bays in Greece. It is a popular tourist spot with excellent beaches, boating, walks and a vibrant night life. After Parga you pass Messopotamos. Nearby, on a forested hill is the ancient site of Necromandio which is historically and mythologically important. Preveza is the largest town in this region. It has excellent beaches, good basic facilities and you can get to Acteon and Lefkada from here. About 30 mins before Preveza high up in the mountains you can visit the Zalongo Monument dedicated to the women of Souli who, following a rebellion in the 19th century against the Turks, threw themselves and their children off a cliff rather than face capture. A sud di Parga, si attraversa il villaggio di Messopotamos. Prevesa è la città più grande di questa regione. Ha ottime spiagge e buone attrezzature turistiche. Da qui parte il traghetto per Actio e Lefkada (15 min). In alto, sulle montagne alla vostra sinistra, si erge il Monumento di Zalongo, a ricordo delle donne di Souli, le quali, durante una rivolta contro i turchi (nel XIX sec.), per non essere catturate, si gettarono da un'altura con i propri figli. Auf einem waldigen Hügel in der Nähe liegt das historisch-religionswissenschaftlich bedeutsame antike Totenorakel.Preveza, die größte Stadt der Region, hat ausgezeichnete Strände, gute touristische Grundausstattung sowie nach Aktio und Lefkada (15 Min.). Zur Linken (ca. 30 Min. vor Preveza) liegt hoch oben in den Bergen das Zalongo-Ehrenmal zur Erinnerung an die Frauen von Souli, die nach einem örtlichen Aufstand zu Beginn des 19. Nikolaos and Mavro Oros, which are situated in front of the village of Syvota, are accessible only by boat. There are frequent boat trips scheduled to the nearby islands and one day excursions to Paxos. Mega Ammos is the largest and the most popular of Syvota’s beaches and right next to it is Mikri Ammos. Pisina beach is on one of the small islets. Bella Vraka is one of Syvota’s most beautiful beaches and it joins the islet of Mourtemeno to Syvota. It is accessible by foot or by sea. The other beaches are Zavia, Gallikos Molos and Zeri. Some12 klms from Syvota en route to Parga, you will find Perdika with its marvelous beaches of Arilas and Karavostasi. There is the remains of an ancient Greek city above the latter. Historically, Syvota was the site of the naval battle between the Corinthians and the Thesprotians in 433 B.C. which marked the start of the Peloponnesian War. Kefalonia is the largest and the most mountainous of the Ionian Islands. Mnt. Ainos (1,626m) is the highest in the Ionian but six other peaks reach over 1,000 metres. The pine trees growing on them are unique to Kefalonia. Sightseeing around Kefalonia Argostoli, the capital (since 1757) is an attractive, tranquil port almost completely rebuilt since the earthquake in 1953. To the east of the town near Lasi are the famous swallow holes - openings in which sea water disappears down seep holes to reappear near Sami. Ancient Krane, dating from the 7th century BC, is a short distance from Argostoli. In ancient times Kefalonia had four such city states, the remains of which still survive. The causeway that links Argostoli to the mainland was built during the British occupation and was completed in 1842. Lixouri, just across from Argostoli, is easily reached by ferry and is the main town of the Palic peninsular -there are many excellent beaches including Lepeda and Xsi to the south and Petani to the west. There are museums in both Argostoli and Lixouri. St. George’s Castle, 8 klms. to the south dates from Byzantine times. Nearby is the church of Ag. Andreas with a museum of Byzantine art. Poros, south east of Sami, is an ideal base for exploring the south of the island. The picturesque village is set amidst mountains and has a long expanse of beach. Nearby is Mt. Atros with a 13th century monastery and there are important Mycenean remains near Poros. You can catch ferries to Kylini on the mainland from here. You can get to Skala by coastal road from Poros or direct from Argostoli. There are Roman ruins at Skala and one of the best beaches in Kefalonia. Il castello di S.Giorgio, 8 km a sud, è di epoca bizantina e nelle sue vicinanze si trova la chiesa di S. Andrea, nella quale è aperto un museo di arte bizantina. Poros, a sud – est di Sami, tra montagna e mare, è il punto di partenza ideale per visitare la parte meridionale dell’isola. Nei suoi pressi ci sono importanti resti micenei e il monte Atros, con un monastero del XIII sec. Dal villaggio si pui prendere il traghetto per Kilini, sulla terraferma. A Scala si giunge o seguendo la strada costiera da Poros oppure direttamente da Argostoli. In questa località rimangono resti di epoca romana e si trova una delle migliori spiagge di tutta l’isola. Zur schönen Stadtanlage gehören ein pittoresker, baumbestandener Zentralplatz und gefällige Uferpromenaden. Nördlich der Stadt auf der Halbinsel Lassi liegen die 'Katavothres', Löcher, in denen Seewasser 'verschluckt' wird, was in der Bucht von Sami wieder austritt. Früher trieb dieses Wasser Mühlen an, deren Reste noch zu sehen sind. Nahe Argostoli liegt das antike Krane (7.Jh.v.Chr.). In jener Zeit existierten vier solcher Stadtstaaten auf der Insel, die in Überresten noch vorhanden sind. Der Damm, der von Argostoli zum Inselfestland führt, wurde unter britischer Besatzung im J. 1842 vollendet. Die Ag. Georgios-Burg 8 km südlich stammt aus byzantinischer Zeit und weist umfangreiche fränkische und venezianische Erweiterungen auf. In der Nähe die Ag. Andreas-Kirche mit einem Museum für byz. Kunst (schöne Ikonen-Sammlung). Lixouri, Argostoli gegenüber und Hauptort der Halbinsel Paliki, ist per Fähre leicht zu erreichen. Das Gebiet lohnt einen Besuch, da es zu den am wenigsten erschlossenen der Insel gehört. Poros, südöstlich von Sami malerisch in den Bergen gelegen, ist idealer Ausgangspunkt für Abstecher in den S der Insel. Auf dem nahen Atros-Berg liegt ein Kloster aus dem 13. Jh.; bedeutende mykenische Überreste finden sich in der Umgebung von Poros. Fährverbindung nach Kyllini auf dem Festland. Nach Skala fährt man entweder über die Küstenstraße von Poros oder direkt von Argostoli aus. Skala bietet römische Ruinen und einen der besten Strände der Insel. Schildkröten nisten am berühmten langen Strand von Mounda: Die Küste ab Katelio ist wirklich ideal für Urlauber. Ag. The original owner, Ms. Gianoula Vallianatou, had been a trained as a chef of traditional Greek food, and she had carved out a name for herself in the profession. Her daughter, Efthalia, carries on the tradition and she is in her own right a chef of great talent. Some of her inspired dishes include: authentic local Kefalonian Meat pie, lamb casserole with lemon and oregano sauce, veal in tomato sauce, prime meat cuts grilled to perfection on charcoal. The meat we serve is mainly from animals that have been reared by us on our farm. Other dishes are cod with garlic sauce, a variety of fish as well as meat on the spit.
