Nyssos Olive Oil
Situated on the southwest side of the island, near to Issos beach
and next to the wetlands of Lake Korrision, are the Stamatelos
family’s olives groves. In this unique and extremely beautiful area
of Corfu, Nyssos olive oil is produced. It is an oil which is tasty
and rich in nutrients and vitamins, smooth to the taste and which
resonates with the aromas of Corfiot nature - ideal for both
cooking and salads. Issos Beach is a long, sandy beach,
considered one of the most beautiful, not only in Corfu, but in
Europe. It was probably named after Nousso the son of Dionysos
and after whom places of exceptional beauty are named. And for
that reason out of respect for Coriot tradition we called our olive
oil Nyssos. We produce and offer quality virgin olive oil in glass,
metal and PET packaging, a bottle made of special plastic.

Below left: The Town Hall in the Platea Dimarchiou. This is one of the most famous of
the Venetian buildings in Corfu. Built in the late 17th century, it was originally used as a
nobleman’s club and then in 1733 it became the first opera house in Greece. In 1903 it
became the town hall.
UNESCO and Corfu Old
Town
The Old Town of Corfu
was listed as a UNESCO World
Heritage site in 2007, one of 29
new sites added last year. The idea
behind the World Heritage list is to
help sites of historical or cultural
importance to be preserved and
protected for future generations to
appreciate. Corfu's Old Town is
cited as a well-preserved example
of a fortified Mediterranean port
town noted for its medieval and
later forts, streets and buildings. The Ancient Greek city at
Butrinto nearby in Albania is also on the list and together with
Corfu Town these two local heritage sites will help to remind
visitors of the historical importance of the region from ancient
times onwards.
Agro tourism and
Eco tourism
These twin approaches to tourism
are beginning to take root in the
major tourist areas of the Ionian.
Agro tourism allows you to stay in a
traditional establishment, a farm
perhaps, wine or olive estate, to
give you a taste of the way
traditional Greek products are made,
farmed or harvested. Eco tourism
focusses on observing nature and
the natural world in regions of
Greece. The aim is to you some
idea about local attempts to conserve and protect nature and the
environment. One good example is the Ecotourism Support Centre
in Ioannina which offers extensive information for visitors.
HISTORY - STORIA - GESCHICHTE
The Ionian has
been inhabited
since
prehistoric times and its
situation on the trade
and invasion routes to
and from the Balkans,
Italy and the Levant, has
insured a rich and varied historical
tradition. The first wave of Ancient
occupiers of contemporary interest were the
Myceneans who have left significant traces
particularly in Thesprotia and Kefalonia.
During the Classical period the region was
home to several independent city states
remains of which can still be seen
particularly in Corfu, Thesprotia and
Kefalonia. Later, these states joined one or
other of the great leagues organised by
Corinth, Athens and Sparta resulting in the
Peloponnesian war breaking out off
Southern Corfu in 431 BC.
During the Hellenistic period the region
was repeatedly threatened by Macedonian
invasions. King Pyrrhos of Epirus who had
already fought the Romans in Southern
Italy was one of those to offer resistance
until his death in 272 BC. The Romans
finally began to occupy the region in 187
BC.
When the Emperor Constantine divided the
Roman Empire in the 4th century AD the
Ionian became part of the Eastern
(Byzantine) Empire. Despite this, various
parts fell under the control of a number of
powerful Frankish and Italian baronial
families including the Normans in the 11th
century and the Angevins in the 13th
century. Eventually however, by the late
15th century, two forces had emerged to
dominate the region; The Ottoman Turks
and the Republic of Venice.
Despite brief periods of occupation by the
Turks and with the exception of most of
Epirus the islands fell under the control of
Venice until the latter’s defeat by
Napoleon in 1797. Then followed a brief
period of French occupation of the Ionian
islands until, in 1798, a joint Russian-
Turkish protectorate was established.
The Septinsular Republic, as it was called,
lasted until the islands were ceded to the
French in 1807 by the treaty of Tilsit. The
British occupied the islands in 1809 and,
following the Congress of Vienna in 1815,
set up the Union of the Ionian Islands under
their protection. (Septinsular, Eptanissa
were the terms used for the seven Ionian
islands which included Kythera off the
Southern Peloponnese).
Following the outbreak of the Greek war of
Independence in 1821 which received
strong support from the Greeks of the
islands, the Turks were gradually driven
northward. Britain returned the Ionian
Islands to the new Greek State in 1864 but
it was not until the end of the first Balkan
War in 1913 that Epirus was returned to
Greece.
Tutta la regione ionica, secondo
quanto testimoniano i ritrovamenti
ricche.
In età storica, i primi dominatori furono i
Micenei, i quali lasciarono tracce del
proprio passaggio specialmente a
Thesprotia e Cefalonia.
Successivamente, nell’epoca classica, vi si
svilupparono città-stato autonome (resti
rimangono a Corfù, Thesprotia e
Peloponneso, 431 a.C.).
Durante il periodo ellenistico, i Macedoni
invasero ripetutamente la regione, mentre i
Romani cominciarono ad occuparla nel 187
a.C..
1913. Invece, le Isole Ionie furono occupate
dai Veneziani, i quali vi rimasero fino al
1797. In seguito esse passarono sotto il
dominio dei francesi, cui furono cedute
definitivamente, con il trattato di Tilsit, nel
1807. Due anni dopo vennero occupate
dagli Inglesi, che dal 1815 le sottoposero al
proprio protettorato, per restituirle allo stato
greco nel 1864.
Die ionischen Inseln und Küsten
sind seit vorgeschichtlichen Zeiten
bewohnt, und ihre Lage an den
Handels- und Wanderungsstraßen von und
nach dem Balkan, Italien und der Levante
war ausschlaggebend für ihre reiche und
bunte Geschichte.
Als erste Welle von -wenn auch
kurzfristigen- Eroberern kamen die
Mykener, die vor allem in Thesprotia und
auf Kefallonia bedeutende Spuren
hinterlassen haben. In klassische Zeit
seinem Tode 272 v.Chr. Widerstand. Ab
187 v.Chr. wurde das Gebiet dann
schrittweise von den Römern besetzt.…
Seit der Teilung des Römischen Reiches in
der Mitte des 4. Jh. n.Chr. unter Konstantin
d. Gr. gehörte das Gebiet des Ionischen
Meeres zum Oströmisch-Byzantinischen
Reich. Dennoch gerieten Teile davon unter
die Kontrolle fränkischer (Normannen im
11. und Anjou im 13. Jh.) und italienischer
Adelsfamilien. Gegen Ende des 15. Jh.
hatten sich zwei führende Mächte in der
Region etabliert: das Osmanische Reich
und die Republik Venedig.
Trotz einiger kurzer türkischer
Besatzungszeiten blieben die Inseln (im
Gegensatz zu Epiros) unter venezianischer
Herrschaft - bis zur Niederlage Venedigs
1797 gegen Napoleon. Es folgte eine kurze
Franzosenzeit bis 1798, als das Gebiet unter
die vereinte russisch-türkische Schutzmacht
kam. Diese sog. "Siebeninsel-Republik"
bestand bis 1807, als die Ionischen Inseln
im Vertrag von Tilsit an die Franzosen
abgetreten wurden.Die Engländer besetzten
die Inseln 1809 und errichteten -als Folge
des Wiener Kongresses 1815- unter ihrer
Schutzherrschaft die "Vereinigten Staaten
der Ionischen Inseln" (Sieben Inseln,
griech.: Eptanissa, bezeichnen die
Ionischen Inseln).
Nach Ausbruch des griechischen
Unabhängigkeitskrieges 1821, der von den
Bewohnern der Inseln leidenschaftlich
unterstützt wurde, mußten sich die Türken
immer mehr nach Norden zurückziehen.
England gab 1864 die Ionischen Inseln an
den jungen griechischen Staat zurück,
Epiros dagegen kam erst am Ende des 1.
Balkankriegs 1913 an Griechenland zurück.
Dimarchiou Square and the
Catholic Cathedral
In the heart of the old town, spend a little
time in the town hall square where you
can enjoy a relaxing meal and a drink
amidst some of Corfu's most famous
landmarks. The Corfu Town Hall, or
Dimarchiou was built by the Venetians
as a club or meeting place (loggia) for
the nobility and served as the Teatro di
San Giacomo between 1733 and 1893. It
was the centre for opera in Corfu and
Greece and attracted many famous
musicians from Italy as well as Greece.
Subsequently it was converted into the
town hall but it helped to cement the
musical traditions that still exist on
Corfu. Adjacent to the town hall is the
Catholic cathedral of St Jacob and St.
Christopher, the Duomo, dating from
1553. Although damaged at certain
points throughout history it has been
restored several times. There is an active
Greek Catholic community in Corfu and
the Duomo often has choir and other
concerts during important festival events.
Loukoumades
These are a kind of doughnut.
The dough is made from flour
and water, then fried in oil and
afterwards soaked in honey
syrup. Sesame or nuts may be
sprinkled on top. The dessert
is popular amongst locals and
visitors to Corfu may enjoy
this delicious treat too. You
can often find roadside stalls
offering loukoumades at
various times of the year,
mainly during festivals.
Guilford Street
Walking up from the Mayor’s
Square you pass naturally into
Guilford Street which offers
you many glimpses of old
Corfiot houses and squares..
Just off Guilford at 19
Moustoxidi Street you can
find the Serbian Museum
founded in memory of the
Serbian army that was given
refuge on Vido Island in Corfu
during the first world war.
What you
can see of
Corfu Town
today owes its
architecture largely
to the Venetians.
The town was
originally founded
in the Byzantine Era
on the site of the Old Fort where for a long
period the entire population of the town
lived. The modern town also has French
and British influences.
The Old Fort although partly demolished
by the British when they returned the
Ionian Islands to Greece, still contains
some impressive fortifications including
some by the famed Martinego.
The New Fort, near the Old Port was
started by the Venetians in 1575 and
completed in 1645. The British added to it.
Today it is a naval establishment but it can
be visited. Look out for the giant Venetian
Lion over the main gateway.
The beautiful 16th century church situated
in St. Spiridon’s St. is the church dedicated
to St. Spiridon, the Patron Saint of the
island. Each year on four occasions the
remains of the saint are paraded through the
streets in celebration. You may visit the
church at any time. Dress suitably. The
Greek Orthodox Cathedral is in a square
just off the Old Port and the Catholic
Cathedral (a restored 14th century building)
can be found near the Town Hall Square
(Platia Dimarchou). The Town Hall itself
was built in the 17th century and is an
exquisite example of Venetian architecture.
The centre of social life in Corfu Town is
undoubtably to be found at the Esplanade.
The town gardens, the bandstand together
with the Liston Arcades offer a welcome
break from the summer heat. The Liston
incidentally was built during the French
occupation (1807-1814) by the father of
Ferdinand de Lesseps, the builder of the
Suez Canal.
At the north end of the Esplanade is the
Palace of St. Michael & St. George built by
the English in the early 19th century as the
Governor’s Palace.
Just out of town on the National Road to
Paleokastritsa you will find the Monastery
of Platytera dating from 1743 which has
several fine icons and a superb bell tower.
You may also like to take a short boat trip
to the island of Vido near the old port. This
tranquil wooded islet has old Russian
fortifications and a small amphitheatre.
The Ancient City of Kerkyra was built
around the suburbs of Garitsa,
Anemomylos and Kanoni and was founded
around the 8th century B.C.
You can see many sites being excavated. In
Anemomylos there is the 10th century
Byzantine church of St. Jason & Sosipatros.
Further up in Kanoni is the Palace of Mon
Repos where Prince Philip was born.
Across the road is an early Christian
SIGHTS AROUND CORFU TOWN - CORFU’ CITTA’ - DIE STADT KORFU
La città di Corfù, fondata in epoca
bizantina, era raccolta attorno alla
Vecchia Fortezza e si allargo nella
zona circostante solo negli anni della
dominazione veneziana. Questo è il motivo
per cui le costruzioni dell'odierna Corfù
ricordano tanto quelle di Venezia, anche se
rimangono segni del passaggio di francesi e
inglesi.
La Vecchia Fortezza, malgrado sia stata in
parte demolita dagli Inglesi, quando essi
restituirono le Isole Ionie alla Grecia,
conserva ancora fortificazioni notevoli,
vecchio campanile.
La costruzione della Nuova Fortezza,
situata vicino al vecchio porto, venne
iniziata dai Veneziani nel 1575 e portata a
termine nel 1645, anche se successivamente
gli inglesi vi apportarono alcune modifiche.
Oggi è sede della locale base della Marina
Militare greca, ma puo essere visitata. Un
gigantesco leone di S. Marco sovrasta il
portone principale.
La bella chiesa del XVI sec., in via S.
Spiridione, è dedicata al santo patrono
dell'isola, appunto S. Spiridione. Quattro
portate in processione lungo le strade
cittadine.
All'estremità settentrionale della Spianada,
c'è il palazzo dei SS. Michele e Giorgio,
eretto dagli inglesi, all'inizio del XIX sec.,
come residenza del Governatore.
Lasciando il centro della città, sulla
Nazionale per Paleokastritsa, si incontra il
Monastero di Platitera, il quale risale al
1743 e conserva molte icone di valore, oltre
ad un bel campanile.
Divertente puo risultare una visita all'isola
di Vido, proprio davanti al porto. Su questa
tranquilla isoletta boscosa si trovano i resti
di vecchie fortificazioni russe e un piccolo
anfiteatro.
britische Einflϋsse erkennbar.
Wenngleich bei der Übergabe an
Griechenland von den Briten teilweise
geschleift, läßt die Alte Festung noch
immer eindrucksvolle Anlagen erkennen,
besonders vom Festungsbaumeister
Martinengo.
Treppenflucht an einem Platz am Alten
Hafen, die Katholische Kathedrale am
Der Mittelpunkt des gesellschaftlichen
Lebens Korfus ist ohne Frage die
Esplanade. Parkanlagen, Musikpavillion
und Liston-Arkaden laden in der
Sommerhitze zu willkommener Rast.
Die Häuserzeile Liston wurde während der
zweiten Franzosenzeit (1807-14) vom
Vater des Suezkanalerbauers, F. Lesseps,
erbaut. Am N-Ende der "Spianada" liegt
der St. Michael/St.Georg-Palast, von den
Briten Anfang des 19. Jh. als Residenz des
Lordoberkommissars erbaut.
ancient Kardaki spring and temple is reached by a path from
Analipsis.
Kanoni, fu fondata attorno all'VIII sec. a.C..
All'estremità di
berϋhmteste Panorama Korfus.
At left: The Liston. This famous Corfiot landmark was originally constructed during the
French occupation of the island (1807-1814). Today it is the centre of Corfiot cafe
society and a must for visitors. Cricket is played on the grass in front of the arcades.
Greek Jewellery
Call it the Spirit of the Mediterranean or just call it
pure style. The creativity in the Ionian Islands is
timeless. Maybe it has something to do with the sea
and the light that dominates the days, or maybe it has
something to do with the quality of life and the way
that people live, beyond the cares and anxieties of
everyday life. Bear in mind that gold and other
precious metals and stones was first used by Greeks
in jewellery as early as 1600 BC so the making of jewellery and
other objects is a tradition that has existed in Greece and in the
Ionian for generations. Every piece has something of the ancient
Greek and Roman past and present embodied in its making. Take
a little of the spirit back home with you. There are many reputable
jewellery stores on the island selling a range of traditional and
modern jewellery.
Stadt (Bouthrotos) beim heutigen Butrint (Albanien) befindet

St. Spiridon
Born in Cyprus about 270
AD, St. Spiridon began his
life as a poor shepherd
later becoming a monk
and a bishop. Revered as a
wise and saintly man, he
took part in the Council of
Nicaea in 325 AD and
died around 350 AD. His
body lay undisturbed for
300 years before being
moved to Constantinople.
Following the collapse of
the Byzantine Empire
(1453), his remains and
those of St Theodora were
smuggled out of the city
and taken to Corfu.
Processions:
Four times a year the
saint’s body is carried
through the streets of
Corfu Town:
Palm Sunday which dates
from 1630 when a plague
was halted by the
intervention of the saint, Good Saturday which dates from 1574
when the saint saved the island from a famine, 11th August which
celebrates the end of the Turkish Siege of 1716 and the first
Sunday in November which commemorates the saint’s
intervention in ridding the island of plague twice during the 17th
century.
St. Theodora
(825-867 AD) was born in Asia Minor and became the Empress of
the Byzantine emperor, Theophilos. Theodora was an intelligent
and forceful woman who helped to restore the worship of icons in
the Empire. After her death her remains were kept in
Constantinople until they were brought to Corfu with those of St
Spiridon.
Investing in Gold
In these times of economic crisis and insecurity only gold has offered a secure and safe haven to people wanting to
protect their financially security. The price of gold has risen steadily since 2004 and in the past five years has risen
from just over 600 dollars an ounce to nearly 2000 dollars an ounce! Little wonder that shops in the UK offering to
buy gold coins and jewellery have sprung up on every high street. Jewellery in general and gold jewellery in
particular can now be considered one of the wisest investments anyone can make. And what better place to buy
gold or other jewellery but Greece with its long tradition of crafting fine jewellery?
Corfu jewellery makers are part of this tradition and a visit to the Giourgas family shops and workshops will give
you some idea of just what is available on the island. The family have been reputable jewellers for over 50 years
and have a wide range of fine jewellery to show you. So, combine a memorable visit to the island with a
beautifully designed piece of jewellery and the knowledge that you have purchased something of lasting financial as well as emotional
value!
are clustered
together along what
has become known
as Disco Strip. The
Centre is situated
on the coastal road
out of town that
runs past the New
Port. Night life is
hectic here but it is
also a fine place to
enjoy a good meal
or drink anytime of the day or night. Good views too in daytime
of the mainland mountains and the coast up to Nissaki.
Bakeries
Corfu is fortunate to have many extremely good bakers - and to
have some of the best bread in Greece! There are many different
types of bread to try including oktospora (made with 8 different
types of seeds) and kolokithi (made with pumpkin seed). Look out
to for the traditional tyropitas - pitas made usually of fillo pastry
and feta cheese. There ara a number of different types including
kourou made with crust pastry but the fillo one is the basic.
Another popular favourite is the spanakopita - a pita containing
spinach and cheese, usually feta but other cheese may be used for
variation. Both tyropitas and spanakopitas come in small sizes and
as slices of a large pie made in a pan. In recent years many
traditional bakery items have become popular again and each
region in the Ionian and Epirus has its own specialities.
EATING OUT - CIBO E BEVANDE
There are a number of different ways to sample Greek cuisine.
At the luxurious end there are restaurants (estiatoria) which
usually offer a full Greek menu including meat, fish and
traditional Greek dishes like papoutsakia (stuffed aubergines), mousaka
(minced meat, aubergine & bechamel sauce), calamaria (squid). Some
restaurants will also offer a range of desserts.
Then there are the tavernas which cater for specific kinds of food.
Psistaria for example, serve grilled meat including goat, lamb and a
range of succulent delicacies such as kokoretsi, spleena or sikoti
(intestines, spleen and liver). Psarotavernas (fish tavernas) serve fresh
fish exclusively. The term ‘taverna’ covers a range of eating
establishments from those that offer an extensive variety of traditional
meat and fish dishes such as sofrito (veal in garlic sauce ) or calamaria
for example to those that have a set menu, usually oven roasted or baked
dishes like stifado (veal and onion stew) which vary from day to day.
If you want to sample Greek hors d’oeuvres or mezes you can visit a
mezedopolion or ouzerie where you will be presented with a range of
appetizers including octopus, spicy sausages, pies, fried peppers,
aubergines and meat balls (keftedakia) and a range of salads and dips
including aubergine salad, taramasalata (made from fish roe) and tzatziki
(made from yoghurt, garlic & cucumber).
Greeks seldom eat dessert after their meals, perhaps some fruit at the
most. Eating cakes & pastries is usually a separate event when you may
go to a zacharoplastio (pastry shop) where you will find most of the
classic Greek sweets - cataïfi, baklava etc. If you get hungry during the
day or if you want breakfast try a galaktopolio where you will find fresh
milk, fresh rolls, yoghurt and honey.
Kafenions offer coffee, aperitifs and other drinks and you may play
games like backgammon (tavli).
Finally, it’s worth remembering that the normal Greek diet is one of the
healthiest in Europe.
Lots of fresh and seasonal fruit, fish, salad and vegetables; local meat is
invariably very fresh; lemon juice is squeezed over most dishes to
neutralize oils and fats and, of course, olives and olive oil are liberally
used.
Most important perhaps is the Greek
attitude to eating. Greeks consider eating
to be a central part of their lives, and they
take time to enjoy their meals. They also
drink in moderation and often only at
mealtimes. All of which should encourage
you to sample Greek cooking whenever
you can. Kali orexi - good appetite.
Ci sono innumerevoli modi di
avvicinarsi all'autentica cucina
greca.
oltre a tante specialità, come kokoretsi, splina e sikoti (rispettivamente
intestini, milza e fegato) Le psarotavernes (taverne di pesce) servono
esclusivamente pesce fresco.
stifado (vitello e cipolle stufati).
Dolci e paste vengono in genere gustati in momenti

spezialisiert: Die Psistaries bieten Gegrilltes einschließlich Lamm,
Zicklein un solcher Delikatessen wie Kokoretsi, Splina, Sikoti (mit
Innereien gefϋllte Därme, Milz und Leber). Psarotavernes
zu den gesϋndesten in Europa gehört nach wie vor sehr frisch;
GREEK WINE
In Greece there is a great variety of
wines to try and great fun can be had
and some surprisingly novel tastes
enjoyed if you’re prepared to be
adventurous. More important, over the
last 15 years most Greek wine makers
have invested heavily in modern
technology with the result that the
wines available are well up to
international standards of production and quality. This combined
with the fact that most of the grapes used in Greek wine are of
historical and indigenous origin makes for some fascinating taste
experiences.
First, all the major wine producers in Greece have a standard range
of good basic wines. At the top of their ranges, they make
superlative red and white wines that compare with the best
anywhere. In addition, each region has major wine companies that
produce top quality local wines. Another fascinating taste treat is
provided by the existence of numerous, usually small, local estate
wineries that produce a range of exquisite wines that you'll find hard
to beat anywhere.
Further down the scale, if you eat out at tavernas you may get the
opportunity to taste barrel wines (chima). These are mass produced
and are similar in quality to house wines but are a lot cheaper.
Finally, some family-run tavernas and kafenions offer home made
wine from locally grown grapes. Naturally this can vary enormously
in taste and quality but can be surprisingly good. What’s more, you
will be tasting a wine made in the traditional way; Greeks have been
making wine since ancient times and while this tradition is dying
out in many areas of Europe, in Greece it continues strong. Each
autumn look out for grape making in the villages!
CORFIOT WINES
For a Greek island, Corfu island has an unusual climate. It is lush
and green, wet winters and long dry summers. These conditions
make for interesting wine tastes and in recent years Corfu has
witnessed a great increase in the number of wineries based on the
island. Using modern technology, Corfiot wine companies have
taken advantage of the range of conditions and the existence of local
varieties of grape to produce some excellent wines. From the sandy
soils around Lake Korission in the south, to Ropa Valley in the
centre and the mountains in the north, each region can boast its own
variety of wine and each has something to offer even the most jaded
palettes.
KEFALONIAN WINE
These wines are amongst the most sought after in Greece for their
fine quality and excellent taste. According to Homer they were
already well-known at the time of the Trojan Wars, Enjoyed by the
Venetians, French and British occupiers of the island, it has only
been in the period after the two world wars and following the 1953
earthquake that production methods improved thus enabling the
exquisite taste to be captured and, literally bottled. This also meant
that production volume increased and consequently they have
become widely available.
Today Kefalonia has 3 appellations of origin (Robola, Muscat and
Mavrodaphne) and there are several wineries using 5 white and two
red varieties of grape of which Robola is perhaps the most famous.
This deliciously crisp and fruity wine, historically first mentioned in
1544, is produced from grapes grown on the slopes of Mount Ainos
and makes a good introduction to the unique wines of the island.
This wine is at its best with fish dishes although many people from
Kefalonia believe it can be drunk with almost any food and as an
aperitif. Try it and see.
EPIRUS WINES
Wines from the Zitsa region of Epirus were already familiar to wine
drinkers in the 17th century. Lord Byron, the famous English poet,
wrote about the wines of Zitsa during his stay at Ioannina. The
region is in the mountains some 25 kms west of Ioannina where 100
hectares provide the Debina grape used in the making of these
wines. The height (700 metres above sea level), climate and welldrained
soil combine to make ideal conditions for this grape variety
and the wines - semi sparkling and dry whites - have a distinct,
well-balanced flavour that makes them so enjoyable.
Property in the Ionian
The property market in the Ionian, particularly in Corfu, Syvota
and Kefalonia, has changed markedly in recent years. This is
partly due to the ease with which EU citizens can now purchase land and
property in Greek border regions but it is also due to the growing
confidence that buyers feel about the long term benefits of investing in
the area and in the quality of services offered by estate agents. While upmarket
investors have owned houses and land in the Ionian for a number
of years, nowadays more and more ordinary people are buying retirement
homes or holiday homes here, or simply investing in houses and land for
their financial return.
There are good reasons why this region is attracting property buyers.
Quality of life, for example, no pollution, good weather, great beaches
and natural beauty, little or no crime. Air, sea and road connections are
better than ever and new developments in the tourist infrastructure such
as golf courses, marinas, spa and hotel complexes make the region
competitive with other popular destinations in the Mediterranean. In
addition there are large expatriate communities throughout the region and
major European languages such as English and German are spoken by
many local people which makes it easier for a foreigner to settle in.
Spiro Analytis. Corfu Property Agency.
Buying property in Corfu is generally a safe investment because Corfu is
an island with a specific number of properties that are on sale. This
creates a stable market with not much price fluctuation.
The Riviera of Corfu is the North East Coast which is well known for
luxurious villas, hot spots and yachts. Villages offer stone cottages, with
traditional character. They are a great idea for someone on a low budget
for them to restore as a holiday home. There are tourist investments all
over the island, hotels, apartments to rent etc. Corfu Town is a Unesco
Heritage site and its history can be traced back many different cultures.
The south of the island differs from the north visually, the scenery is less
dramatic but still remarkably beautiful and with virgin beaches and less
tourist development. There are also investment opportunities to be found
here too. For more information contact Corfu Property Company on
Fish Spas
Fish Spa therapy is becoming more and more popular. It is a
natural pedicure method, originating from Turkey and practiced
all over the Far East and now in other parts of the world. This
unique skin treatment massages your feet using Garra Rufa fish.
The fish are like comb fish in that they only consume the affected
and dead areas of the skin, leaving the healthy skin to grow. It is
relaxing and a great way of pampering yourself. During the
treatment the fish suck and nibble away the dry skin from your
feet leaving you feeling healthy and rejuvenated. The fish can also
stimulate acupuncture points helping to regulate the nervous
system, relax the body and release fatigue. Blood flow is increased
during the treatment.
KOUM KOUAT
One of the specialities of Corfu is Koum Kouat, a
liqueur made from miniature oranges that are allowed
to ferment naturally. Originally introduced from Japan
which has a similar climate, these oranges grow
extremely well in the Ionian. Try Koum Kouat on it’s
own or as a cocktail mix. It is also delicious when
added to fruit salad or to ice-cream. Koum Kouat is
available as a liqueur or bottled as a preserve.
Preserves and marmalade are also made from the
fruit.
crescono perfettamente nello Ionio. Provate il koum
kouat da solo o in cocktail.
Mavromatis is one of Corfu’s oldest distilleries,
established in 1965. They have recently introduced a
medioevale e a quelli successivi.
Local Corfiot Products
Everything local - Organic, Ecological, Biological and natural!
Apart from its natural beauty, Corfu is rich in vegetation, soils, natural
water supplies, climate and rainfall. Not surprisingly, it produces a
range of local products that are hard to find elsewhere. In recent
times there has also been a growing interest in organic or biological
natural products so there is a wide range to choose from.
Perhaps the most famous of all Corfiot products is wine.
The rich soil and varied climate and geology have created
the conditions for several varieties of grapes to be
produced, each with its own unique taste. Look out for the
strawberry flavoured variety of local wine. Another alcohol
based product associated with Corfu is Koum Kouat which
is made from miniature oranges and can be enjoyed as a
liqueur or as a spoon sweet. There are also other products
made from these oranges - loukoumi and marmalade.
Ginger Beer was introduced to the island by the British in
the early 19th century and it is still made here. Corfiot Beer
is the real (alcoholic) thing however and is also made here.
Limoncello liqueur is also a locally produced product -
usually served after a meal.
The same climatic and soil conditions that make for great
wine tastes on Corfu, also help to produce abundant fruit
and vegetables. In the summer, Corfu is a sub-tropical
island and just about anything grows. Part of this production
finds its way into jams and other preserves and part into
local dishes such as gemista - stuffed aubergines,
tomatoes or peppers.
The vast number of olive trees on the island is in large part
due to the encouragement given to Corfiots to plant trees by
the Venetians during their occupation. The sheer
abundance of these evergreen trees give Corfu its all year
round greenery but also account for a number of local
products. Olives for example, are produced all over the
island and vary in taste according to where they are grown
each region has its own distinctive flavour. And the same
goes for olive oil. The olive finds its way too into locally
made olive oil soaps and don't forget the art of olive wood
making whereby craftsmen shape the resilient olive wood
into countless shapes - ranging from ornaments to salad
bowls.
Due to its position on the traditional sailing routes from Italy
to the Orient, Corfu has not unexpectedly accumulated a
range of recipes and cooking delights that are unique to
the island but influenced by both east and west. Pastisado,
for example, a beef pasta dish cooked in a rich tomato
sauce is one such speciality as is sofrito, a beef stew in a
white sauce. Try also some of the famous local fish dishes -
Savoro; fish marinated in vinegar, rosemary and raisins and
then fried. Bianco; a fish dish served with garlic and
potatoes. Or try bourtheto, a traditional peppery fish stew.
On the sweet side, mandolato is certainly one of the best
known of the traditional Corfiot sweets. This is a nougat
made with honey and roasted almonds. Look out too for
delicious caramelized almonds, pastelli (sesame and
honey snacks) and sykomaida - figs and ouzo pie.
Loukamades is another well-known local sweet - a semisweet
donut fried in oil - that can be found sold by street
and roadside vendors on certain feast days. Honey is also
produced on the island and can be found on the offshore
island of Erikoussa. The variety of herbs and flowers found
on Corfu ensure the natural taste of local honey.
Don’t forget too that Corfu has many fine bakeries making a
range of traditional breads, pies, savouries and other tasty
treats.

The Orthodox Cathedral Square
This is one of the most beautiful squares in Corfu Town both for
its historical significance and its quiet and relaxed atmosphere. Its
cafes and tavernas provide colour and character away from the
town's busy activity. The Metropolitan cathedral was built in 1577
on the site of an earlier church and is dedicated to 3 saints -
Panagia Spiliotissa, Vlasios and Theodora. The remains of
St.Theodora are kept inside the church and were brought to Corfu
at the same time as those of St. Spiridon. The square is also a convenient
place to explore the areas around. Leading off from it are
narrow lanes and alleyways leading up into the Mouragi and
Campiello with fascinating old houses and doors and gardens to
enchant the visitor. In days gone by the main port of Corfu lay just
across the square from the Cathedral Square - today a new marina
is in process of construction. The Spilia Gate is also nearby
Street leading to the New Fort
and Tenedos
The New Fort and Tenedos
One of the most historically impressive areas
of Corfu Town is the area defined by a semicircle
around the old port. Here you can find
the New Fort, Spilia and the Tenedeos church.
Dominating the area is the New Fort, one of
the most impressive of Mediterranean
fortifications. Building started in 1576 by the
Venetians and was added to by the British - it
is not only well-preserved but has excellent
views of the old town from the summit.
On the way to the New Fort you pass up an
old cobbled lane which has a 17th century
Catholic monastery and domed church of
Tenedos dedicated to the Virgin Mary. This is
one of the most beautiful Catholic churches on
the island. The lane continues through a tunnel
through the walls of the fort to the town
market place
Perama and Benitses are major
tourist resorts, while the Achillion
Palace just outside Gastouri was
the summer residence of the Empress
Elizabeth of Austria and later Kaiser
Wilhelm. Kaiser’s Bridge between
Perama and Benitses was where the
Kaiser used to anchor his yacht. Ag.
Ioannis, Peristeron has a long sandy
beach with many facilities. It is popular
with locals as well as tourists.
Further south, Moraitika and Messonghi
are popular resorts with good beaches;
there are, incidentally, Roman ruins in
Benitses and Moraitika.
All routes south meet near
Ag. Mattheos which has a monastery on
top of the mountain of the same name, a
prehistoric site and, nearby, the remains of
a Byzantine castle (at Gardiki) and access
to Lake Korission, Corfu’s largest lake.
There are excellent beaches at the lake
continuing all the way south. St. George’s
Bay near Argirades is the major resort in
the area. On the east coast, around
Boukari Bay you can enjoy the old world
charm of wooded slopes and characterful
villages.
Lefkimmi is the agricultural centre of
South Corfu and still retains much of its
19th century character. On the east coast
nearby are many beaches. the salt flats on
the coast have many birds to view. Cavos,
to the south is now a major tourist centre.
On the south west coast look out for
numerous long sandy beaches.
Continuando a discendere
dedicato appunto a S. Matteo.
allunga fino all'estremità meridionale dell'isola.
notevole centro turistico.
Chlomos is one of the most well-preserved traditional
villages on the island. Set high up in the central
mountain ridge above Lake Korission and overlooking
the resorts of Messonghi, Moraitika and Boucari, the
village has remained almost untouched over the years.
The clean, well-cared for village lanes, churches, old
houses and squares offer a glimpse into village life in
the past. As you walk around you will discover that
Chlomos has spectacular views all around - the east
coast just below and the lake and the south, including
Paxos, and views north of Corfu Town and Kanoni. The
village is well catered for by cafe bars and tavernas so
you can expect to enjoy a meal or a drink on your visit.
Ag. Gordios is one of the most popular resorts on Corfu. It
a footpath up to the village of Pentati. At the north end of the beach there are paths and tracks over rocky
inlets to explore. The coastline to the north between Ag. Gordios and Yaliscari is full of pine-covered bays.
Water sports, shops, bars, cafes, tavernas and restaurants all help to make this an ideal family holiday resort.
THE WEST COAST - LA COSTA OCCIDENTALE
DIE WESTKÜSTE
Pelekas, one of the oldest established villages on Corfu, is
known for its views over the Ropa Valley and Corfu Town. It
also offers spectacular sunsets best viewed from Kaiser’s
Throne, named after the frequent visits of Kaiser Wilhelm II before
the first world war. There are many excellent sandy beaches nearby
at Ermones, Mirtiotissa, Glyfada, Pelekas, Kontogialos and at
Yaliskari.
Ermones, Mirtiotissa, Glifada, Kondoialos.
Besuche Kaiser Wilhelms II.
In der Nähe zahlreiche ausgezeichnete Sandstrände: Ermones,
Myrtiotissa, Glyfada und Kontogialos, weiter südlich Klippen und
Strand von Gialiskari und Ag. Gordis.
WEST COAST BEACHES
Great sandy beaches abound on Corfu and many can be found on the
west coast of the island. Beaches such as Glyfada, Kontogialos, Ag.
Gordis, the beaches around Lake Korission, Paramonas, Prasoudi, the
southern beaches around Marathias, Vitalades and the almost
untouched beaches in the far south west are the obvious examples.
Paramonas for example is a comfortable, peaceful, friendly family
beach - a good base for exploring the area around. But there are also
small, pine-covered coves near Yaliskari, and other magnificent sites
to be seen nearby. Aerostatos for example near Sinarades is well
worth a visit.
Kontogialos Beach/ Pelekas Beach
The river at Lefkimi
St. George’s Beach, South Corfu
View from St. Peter’s beach
Lefkimi River, St.
George’s beach and
Ag. Petros beach.
Just to the south of
Lefkimi, the river of the
same name offers a
different view of Corfu. A
lovely setting with ducks
and geese in the water and
bars and tavernas on the
water front, it is ideal for
the family. You can walk
alongside the river right to
the sea where there is an
excellent stretch of sandy
beach.
Ag. Petros/ St. Peter’s
beach, near Cavos, has
become one of the more
popular beach resorts in the
south of Corfu. Situated
just to the south of the port terminal at Lefkimi and on the road
to Cavos, the area boasts a lovely long stretch of sandy beach
with great views across to the mainland - including the Syvota
islands where the opening sea battle of the Peloponnesian War
was fought in 433 BC. Today, the beach and village offer the
tourist many facilities, fine swimming for the whole family and
many cafes, bars and restaurants, swimming pool complexes,
beach and sea sports and more.
St. George’s resort in the south near Argirades has many
facilities for tourists but perhaps its best feature is the long
stretch of sandy beach leading from the town to Lake
Korission. Here you will find good swimming for the family
and excellent wind surfing. There are also sand dunes to
explore and a unique pine forest with rare specimens of wild
flowers to walk through. The resort is one of the fastest
developing areas in Corfu and caters for young and old alike.

Paleokastritsa, Bella Vista and Angelokastro
Paleokastritsa gets its name from the old Byzantine castle of
Angelokastro which overlooks the bays of the resort and is
situated just outside Krini. It is just as famous though for the
magnificent views of the area from BellaVista near Lakones and
for its Monastery dating from the 13th century situated on a tree
covered promontory near the main beach. The resort has numerous
fine bays and coves which are ideal for family swimming and for
enjoying diving and snorkelling. It is well supplied with shops,
supermarkets and places to eat and drink and you can take boat trips to nearby
beauty spots should you want to explore the bays and caves around. Good walks
are available too.
THE NORTH EAST COAST - COSTA NORD-EST - O-KÜSTE NACH NORDEN
Famous sites on the East Coast
Kouloura and Kalami are justly famous and the views of
Albania from here to Kassiopi are spectacular. This is
sometimes referred to as Durrell Country - the family once lived in
Kalami in the white house on the beach. Kouloura is a small fishing
village best viewed from above. It is one of the most famous of all
views of Corfu.
You might like to get off the beaten track and visit the beautiful
bays around Agni (after Nissaki) or
Agni Bay
San Stefanos (just before Kassiopi);
the latter is barely 3 klms. from
Albania.
Higher up on the slopes of the
mountains behind Kalami you can find
untouched old villages with old stone
houses.Life up here has remained pretty
much untouched. Look out especially
for old olive mills.
Da Kouloura e Kalami, due
minuscoli centri turistici, fino a
Kassiopi si ammirano le coste
dell'Albania.
Quest' ultimo
dista solo 3 km, in linea d'aria, dall'Albania.
Kouloura
The view from Kassiopi Castle
KASSIOPI
In Roman times this was the first landfall in Greece from
Italy and has seen many famous visitors including Cicero,
Mark Anthony and the Emperor Nero.
The Romans built a castle on the heights above the town which was
demolished and then rebuilt by the Venetians to protect the village
from pirate and Turkish raids. Not much is left of the fort but it can
be explored with determination and good shoes. Look out for the old
Venetian Church near the harbour and the old cannons rescued from
a sunken galleon - these are proudly displayed today across from the
majestic old plane tree that dominates the harbour square. Kassiopi
has retained its character as a fishing village and a holiday there
allows you to enjoy the traditional way of life with modern comforts.
There are many good beaches and it is ideal for walks and pony
trekking. Across from the village you can see Saranda in Albania
and late in the season you may see snow on the mountains in the
distance.
famosi, compresi Cicerone, Marco Antonio e l'imperatore
Nerone.
Kassiopi: Dieser beliebte Urlaubsort liegt 36 km von Korfu-
Stadt an der Einfahrt in den Korfu-Kanal. In römischer Zeit
Schuhwerk erkunden. Beachten Sie auch die alte venezianische
Kirche in der
Nähe des Hafens
sowie die aus
einer gesunkenen
Galeone
geretteten
Kanonen, die
heute so stolz
gegenüber der
alten Platane am
Hafenplatz
ausgebreitet
liegen. Neben
vielen schönen
Stränden bietet
Kassiopi ideale
Verhältnisse für Wandern und Ponyreiten.
Bataria, Kassiopi
ACHARAVI & RODA
The road across the northern coast from Kassiopi takes you
first past the fine bays of Imerolia, Kalamaki and Apraos.
Look out for the lake and beach at Ag. Spiridon which is
just after the turnoff to Perithia. From Perithia you can get up to
Mount Pandocrator and there are caves near to the village in the
foothills. Alimos beach just before Acharavi is long and sandy.
Acharavi has one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in the north.
It is now a major resort and has extensive tourist facilities and a
vibrant night life. There is a Roman bath on the outskirts.
Roda a little further along is another popular tourist resort and it has
a number of ancient Greek and Roman sites. Beyond Roda en route
to Sidari you come to the picturesque old village of Karoussades in
the hills above the lovely beach at Astrakeri.
The Monastery at Ag. Ioannis
Karoussades
There is a small walled monastery
near to the camping at Ag. Ioannis
Karoussades which is worth walking
up to. It has lovely views all around
and a fine door and bell tower. Ag
Ioannis has a long sandy beach.
THE NORTH-WEST - A COSTA NORD-OCCIDENTALE - DER NORDWESTEN KÜSTE
SIDARI
Sidari is one of the most beautiful and cheerful resorts in
Corfu. Set amidst rolling hills, fields and forests, the whole
region is known for its relaxed pace of life, wide open
spaces and vibrant colours. Sidari itself has extensive and safe sandy
beaches, ample tourist facilities and a pleasantly easy-going
atmosphere. It’s an ideal place for a family holiday in that there is
plenty for the kids to do and many amusements, water sports, discos
and so on for other members of the family. There are also numerous
shopping opportunities, excellent restaurants and bars, hotels and of
course the beach is never far away.
There is plenty of opportunity too for walks in the lush surrounding
countryside or along the beaches that stretch for miles either side of
the town. You could also if you wish take a boat to one of the
offshore islands - Erikoussa, Othoni or Mathraki where the fishing
is good and peace and tranquility guaranteed.
Ag. Ioannis Karoussades has a long sandy beach and to the east
end, a short way inland, lies an old walled monastery with
picturesque views. The village of Karoussades is well worth
exploring with its old streets and some magnificent mansions and
the area around is full of enchanting valleys, old churches,
monasteries and secluded beaches.
Peroulades, just to the west of Sidari, is known for its sandstone
cliffs which form exquisite and ever changing bays and inlets as the
sea moulds and shapes them. The famous Canal d’Amour
(originally a sand cave in the form of a tunnel) is here. Initially
named after a natural chanel cut by the sea in the sand cliffs, it was a
place where lovers could be alone. Time has changed the coastline
but not love. Further west of the Canal d’Amour there are many old
villages and untouched beaches to explore. This is an ideal area for
walks and bicycle rides. If you pass through the village of
Peroulades you come to the beach cliff top where there is a path
down to the sea. In the village look out for signs to Cape Drastis.
You won’t be dissapointed - fascinating views of the cliffs and
beaches below you.
Sidari.
ummauertes Kloster in malerischer Umgebung.
diapontischen Inseln besteht Schiffsverbindung.
Wer Ag. Stefanos einmal
besucht, kommt immer
wieder zurück.
Die Buchten von Arilas
und Ag. Georgios bieten
schöne Strände und eine
gute Infrastruktur.
SAN STEFANO - AVLIOTIS - ARILLA BAY
AFIONAS - ST. GEORGES’ BAY
Ag. Stefanos or San Stefano village, near to Avliotes, is
situated in the north west of the island and is a quiet family
resort with magnificent views and a lovely long sandy beach
with shallow water. The village has most of the standard facilities
for holidaymakers like restaurants, bars, supermarkets, gift shops,
bakery, bike and car rentals and a general information office. You
can also enjoy most water sports and the less energetic can play pool
or other games since everything is close to the beach. There are boat
trips to the island which can be arranged through San Stefano
Travel. The 4 islands (3 inhabited, one deserted) are worth visiting
for their wild nature, traditional Greek way of life and crystal clear
water. Trips depart from the local harbour at the end of the village
where you can also buy fresh fish from the fishing boats when they
return with their early morning catch. But perhaps the greatest
attraction of the village is the view from the top of the hill where
you can see San Stefano Bay, nearby Arilla Bay, the cliffs and the
islands offshore all at once. Best of course when the sun sets. The
local people have a saying that if you visit San Stefano once you
will always be a regular visitor. Near to the beach there are many
facilities like restaurants, bars, swimming pool complexes,
supermarkets, gift shops, bakeries, bike and car rentals, tourist
information offices and much more. On the beach there is a beach
bar offering fresh fruit juices, snacks, tropical cocktails and a
children’s playground. Afionas is a small, picturesque village
situated on the headland between St. George's Bay and Arilla Bay. It
has spectacular views of both bays and of the Porto Timoni
headland and bays to the west which have offered shelter to
fishermen, pirates and others for centuries. Arilla Bay and St.
George’s Bay have excellent beaches and good facilities. These are
essentially new and developing resorts which retain much of the old
world atmosphere of Corfu in that the environments and natural
features remain relatively untouched.
Potrete
praticare molti sport acquatici e i meno energici potranno giocare a
Paxos with its dependency, Anti-Paxos, offers an almost
complete contrast to Corfu in that its pace of life is much
slower and more relaxed. There are countless coves and
forests, lovely walks (Paxos is only 10 klms. long and 4 klms. wide)
and many beaches to explore.
Lefkada is easily reached by bridge across the narrow channel that
separates the island from Acteon. Nearby is the 14th century
Frankish castle, Santa Maura. The eastern coastline is resplendent
with wooded offshore islets and gentle slopes while the west coast is
steep with many sandy coves. Most of the tourist development is on
the east coast at Ligia, Nidri and in the south at Poros and Vassiliki.
Ithaka, some 4 kms. off the coast of Kefalonia and it is the place
that has traditionally been associated with Homer’s ‘Odysseus’. It
has many sites of historical interest; there are Bronze Age remains in
the north near Stavros and Ancient Greek artifacts have been found
in caves in the bay of Polis, West of Stavros. There are also
interesting monasteries at Perahori and Kathara. Vathi, the capital,
is a picturesque port while Kioni, Platrithia and Frikes are
traditional villages well worth visiting. There is also a famous cave
at Nymphes near Vathi.
Zakynthos is a beautiful island off the coast of the Peloponnese
was, according to legend, named after the son of Dardanos, King of
Troy. Today it is fast becoming one of the most popular islands in
the Ionian. From its beautiful beaches to its pine-covered mountains
and lush valleys, it offers something for everyone. The capital,
Zakynthos, has been tastefully rebuilt since the 1953 earthquake and
is noted for its many fine churches, tall campanile and Venetian
fortress. Dionysos Solomos, the famous Greek poet was born here.
There are good beaches at many places on the island while excellent
views can be had from Keri. In the north near Skinari are the
famous Blue Caves.
lunga 10 km e larga 4) Offre spiagge incantevoli.
Lefkada è facilmente raggiungibile attraverso il ponte sullo stretto
interessanti monasteri.
venezianische Festung. Dionysios Solomos, der griechische
Nationaldichter, wurde 1797 hier geboren. Zahlreiche gute Strände,
Panorama-Ausblick bei Keri. Im N nahe Skinari liegen die
berühmten Blauen Grotten.
Igoumenitsa is the capital of the ancient region of
Thesprotia and the starting point of the Egnatia Road which
runs to the Turkish border. It is a disembarkation point for
ferries from Italy, Corfu and Patras and one of the fastest growing
cities in Greece. Travelling south from Igoumenitsa you’ll pass the
fishing village of Plataria with its famous long beach and 12 klms
later Syvota. Parga is built around one of the most beautiful bays
in Greece. It is a popular tourist spot with excellent beaches,
boating, walks and a vibrant night life. After Parga you pass
Messopotamos. Nearby, on a forested hill is the ancient site of
Necromandio which is historically and mythologically important.
Preveza is the largest town in this region. It has excellent beaches,
good basic facilities and you can get to Acteon and Lefkada from
here. About 30 mins before Preveza high up in the mountains you
can visit the Zalongo Monument dedicated to the women of Souli
who, following a rebellion in the 19th century against the Turks,
threw themselves and their children off a cliff rather than face
capture. Nearby are the remains of ancient Kassope.
Syvota
Syvota is a seaside resort on the south
west tip of Southern Thesprotia
directly across from Corfu. Set in a
small, protected bay, Syvota includes
a group of small islands and some of
the most beautiful beaches in Epirus.
It is considered one of the four best
summer holiday destinations in
Greece and is the chosen summer
destination for national and
international politicians, entrepreneurs
and artists. It boasts a modern marina
and hotel complexes. In Syvota’s picturesque harbour you can
enjoy a coffee at one of the cafes whilst admiring the luxurious
yachts in the marina or you can have a memorable meal at one of
the ouzeries, pizzerias or tavernas that line the water front. A trip
by yacht around Syvota to Parga or even Paxos is an ideal way to
discover the beautiful hidden beaches that abound. The islets of
Ag. Nikolaos and Mavro Oros, which are situated in front of the
village of Syvota, are accessible only by boat. There are frequent
boat trips scheduled to the nearby islands and one day excursions
to Paxos. Mega Ammos is the largest and the most popular of
Syvota’s beaches and right next to it is Mikri Ammos. Pisina
beach is on one of the small islets. Bella Vraka is one of Syvota’s
most beautiful beaches and it joins the islet of Mourtemeno to
Syvota. It is accessible by foot or by sea. The other beaches are
Zavia, Gallikos Molos and Zeri. Some12 klms from Syvota en
route to Parga, you will find Perdika with its marvelous beaches
of Arilas and Karavostasi. There is the remains of an ancient
Greek city above the latter. Historically, Syvota was the site of the
naval battle between the Corinthians and the Thesprotians in 433
B.C. which marked the start of the Peloponnesian War.
Kefalonia is the largest and the most mountainous of the
Ionian Islands. Mnt. Ainos (1,626m) is the highest in the
Ionian but six other peaks reach over 1,000 metres. The pine
trees growing on them are unique to Kefalonia.
Sightseeing around Kefalonia
Argostoli, the capital (since 1757) is an attractive, tranquil port
almost completely rebuilt since the earthquake in 1953. To the east
of the town near Lasi are the famous swallow holes - openings in
which sea water disappears down seep holes to reappear near Sami.
Ancient Krane, dating from the 7th century BC, is a short distance
from Argostoli. In ancient times Kefalonia had four such city states,
the remains of which still survive. The causeway that links Argostoli
to the mainland was built during the British occupation and was
completed in 1842. Lixouri, just across from Argostoli, is easily
reached by ferry and is the main town of the Palic peninsular -there
are many excellent beaches including Lepeda and Xsi to the south
and Petani to the west. There are museums in both Argostoli and
Lixouri.
St. George’s Castle, 8 klms. to the south dates from Byzantine
times. Nearby is the church of Ag. Andreas with a museum of
Byzantine art. Poros, south east of Sami, is an ideal base for
exploring the south of the island. The picturesque village is set
amidst mountains and has a long expanse of beach. Nearby is Mt.
Atros with a 13th century monastery and there are important
Mycenean remains near Poros. You can catch ferries to Kylini on the
mainland from here. You can get to Skala by coastal road from
Poros or direct from Argostoli. There are Roman ruins at Skala and
one of the best beaches in Kefalonia.
riaffiorare a Sami.
Inseln: der Enos (1626 m) ist der höchste Gipfel der Region;
weitere sechs sind über 1000 m hoch. Ihre
pinienbestandenen Hänge sind etwas Einmaliges. Zahlreiche
Sami wieder austritt. Früher trieb dieses Wasser Mühlen an, deren
Reste noch zu sehen sind. Nahe Argostoli liegt das antike Krane
(7.Jh.v.Chr.).
Ag. Efimia
To Steki Taverna
You’ll find To Steki in the beautiful, traditional village of Ag. Efimia.. It
is a family establishment which has been operating since 1984. The
original owner, Ms. Gianoula Vallianatou, had been a trained as a chef of
traditional Greek food, and she had carved out a name for herself in the
profession. Her daughter, Efthalia, carries on the tradition and she is in her
own right a chef of great talent. Some of her inspired dishes include:
authentic local Kefalonian Meat pie, lamb casserole with lemon and
oregano sauce, veal in tomato sauce, prime meat cuts grilled to perfection
on charcoal. The meat we serve is mainly from animals that have been
reared by us on our farm. Other dishes are cod with garlic sauce, a variety
of fish as well as meat on the spit. We successfully organize Greek nights
for our guests twice a week! Tel: 26740 61025.
To the north of
Argostoli be sure to
visit Assos, a beautiful
village with spectacular views.
The Venetian castle on the
headland dates from the 16th
century. Nearby is the
beautiful beach at Myrtos
Bay. From the national road
above you can get spectacular
views of the bay. To the south
you will find a beautiful beach
at Ag. Kiriaki. Most of the
beaches in this area are
relatively untouched.
Fiskardo, in the far north of
Kefalonia, is a beautiful and
tranquil fishing village named Myrtos bay and Assos
after Robert Guiscard, the
Norman invader who died near here in 1085. It still retains its old
character having escaped relatively unscathed from the 1953
earthquake. Nearby are ancient remains, Roman and Byzantine
ruins and remnants of the British occupation. Look out for the
lighthouse and other ruins nearby. Great walks and lovely wooded
beaches abound in this area.
turisticamente attrezzato e
offre bei litorali. Sopra la città
si trovano i resti dell’antica
Same e delle rovine romane.
Vicino a questa cittadina,
proprio fuori del villaggio di
Karavolilos, c’è il lago
sotterraneo di Melissanthi, il
quale pui essere esplorato in
barca. Non molto lontano da
esso si ergeva un tempio
dedicato alla ninfa
Melissanthe, da cui
probabilmente ha preso nome
il lago. Sempre vicino a Sami,
si trovano delle grotte, tra le
Fiscardo
Skala
This is one of the fastest growing resorts in Kefalonia and
for good reason. It is situated midway between Katelios and
Poros amidst some of the most beautiful beaches in the
Ionian. Long stretches of idyllic sandy beaches stretch each
side of the town and all along the coastline either side can
be found many untouched bays and beaches. Near to Skala
is the famous beach at Mounda which is one of the most
popular turtle nesting grounds on the island and is included
in the Natura 2000 conservation programme. Nearby there
is a restored roof tile kiln showing how tiles were once
made in the area. Skala also has a fine example of a mosaic
floor of a Roman villa dating from the early Christian
period and the remains of a 6th century BC ancient Greek
temple dedicated to Apollo. The modern town, centred on
the pine-covered central square, has many shops, cafes,
bars, tavernas and restaurants nearby so tourists are well
catered for and there are many beach facilities making it an
ideal family resort.
Fiscardo,
Katelios
all’estremità nord di
Cefalonia, è un
grazioso villaggio di
pescatori, che deve il
proprio nome a
Roberto il Guiscardo,
l’invasore normanno
che mori in questa
zona nel 1085. Il
centro mantiene le
caratteristiche
architettoniche
alcune tracce dell’occupazione inglese.
A home in Kefalonia?
Forbes Magazine listed Kefalonia the fourth most idyllic place to
live in Europe in a 2008 article. Good food, tranquility, great natural
beauty and a relaxed, hospitable and jovial quality of life were
especially mentioned. In fact there is more to commend the island.
Rebuilt with care, strict safety and attention to traditions after the
1953 earthquake, Kefalonia can now boast a good road network,
marinas, airport and seaports, easy connections to other islands and
the mainland, all with a mild Mediterranean climate thrown in! Add
to this good general facilties such as hospitals, institutions of
learning, museums, galleries, sports and sailing facilities, and you
have a truly idyllic place to live and to spend your holidays in.
Ancient archaelogical sites, mountains, wetlands, turtle nesting
beaches... what more could you want?
Skala Beach
Sami is the second largest port in
Kefalonia with many facilities and Sami Harbour
fine beaches. Lake Melissani is near
to Sami just outside the village of
Karavomylos. This famous underground lake
can be explored by boat - nearby is an
ancient sacrificial shrine dedicated to
Melisanthe after whom the lake is believed to
be named. There are many caves near to
Sami; the Drogarati and Angalaki caves
amongst others. There are stalagmites and
stalactites at the Drogarati cave. Ancient
Sami is above the modern town and well worth visiting for its remains
and views. To the north of Sami lies the attractive fishing village and
fine beach of Ag. Efimia. There are ancient ruins above the village and
some great walks in the nearby hills.
Lassi
One of the most popular beach
resorts in Kefalonia. Just
outside Argostoli on the road
to the airport, fun in the sun
for all! Many good beaches,
great nightlife, a vibrant
atmosphere, some of the finest
bars and tavernas in town and
many excellent bays and coves
to explore. Across from Lassi
you can see great sunsets as
the sun goes down in the west
of the island. The cave of St.
Gerasimos, the patron saint of
Kefalonia, is situated up on a
hillside and easy to find. Lassi
is full of sandy beaches and
lovely coves such as this one.
Im N der Insel sollten Sie unbedingt
Assos besuchen, ein hübsches Dorf
mit eindrucksvollen Aussichten. Die
venezianische Burg auf der Landzunge datiert
aus dem 16. Jh. Den nahegelegenen schönen
Strand an der Myrtos-Bucht erreicht man
über eine gewundene Abzweigung von der
Hauptstraße, von wo aus sich ein
phantastischer Blick über die Bucht bietet.
Südlich davon bei Agia Kyriaki schöner
Strand.
In
der Nähe altsteinzeitliche Reste, byzantinische Ruinen sowie
einige Spuren der englischen Besatzungszeit.
Katelios
Birds on Koutavas Lagoon
Wildlife on Kefalonia
There are many places of interest for the naturist in Kefalonia.
Caretta-caretta, loggerhead sea turtles for example nest on
some of the beaches near to Scala - especially at Mounda
Beach just below Katelios - and one can often be seen around
the fishing boats in Argostoli harbour. Wild horses can be seen
around the Pigi Monastery on the southern slopes of Mount
Aenos, the mountain goats on the mountain itself are
fascinating in their majesty and for bird lovers, the wetlands
Mountain Goat
nearly always provide some
surprises. There are swans and wild
geese for example on the south side
wetland of the Koutavos Lagoon at
Argostoli and the large wetland to
the north of Lixouri is well worth
visiting. In the villages of Arginia
and Markopoulo on the 15th August
each year, harmless snakes (Virgin's
snakes) appear for a brief time and
are regarded as a good omen.
For information on environmental
issues on Kefalonia visit
week from 9.00-15.00. Tel: 26710 29258.
The Palic Peninsula
Untouched Kefalonia
This large area of western
Kefalonia has much to offer
visitors who want to explore the
island away from the crowds.
There are beautiful beaches,
fascinating old villages,
monasteries, mountains and
wooded areas. Look out especially
for the majestic beach at Petani
which rivals Myrtos in splendour
and breath taking views.
Petani Beach
St. Gerasimos
The patron saint of Kefalonia, he was
born in Trikala, became a monk and lived
for some years in the Holy Land and
Zakynthos before settling in 1560 in
Kefalonia. He founded the famous
monastery in the Omala valley and lived
there until he died in 1579. The valley is
dominated by the monastery and is a
wonderful place to enjoy peace and
serenity. There is a great tree lined road
leading to the church and the valley is
famed for its wine. There are processions
on the 15th August and 20th October
each year.
The Castle
of
St. George
Once the
capital of
Kefalonia,
there are two
castles. The
smaller inner
one is
Byzantine
and is about
1000 years old. The larger castle
is Venetian and is 500 years old.
It is open for viewing daily from
the morning till early evening.
Nearby is the church of Ag.
Andreas with a museum of
Byzantine Art. Best of all though
are the views; Argostoli and
Western Kefalonia, Zakynthos
and the south of Kefalonia all lie
before you.
Kefalonia has some of the most
remarkable geological formations in the Ionian region. Chief
amongst these is the system of underground caves, lakes and
rivers known as katavothres the best examples of which can be
seen at Drogarati and Melissani near Sami. Drogarati has a deep
cave system and Melissani an underground lake. Sea water enters
the underground system near Argostoli and emerges again in the
lake at Melissani from where it flows into the sea at Karavomilos.
Here the water forms a small lake with ducks and wild birds
before passing through a water mill to the sea.
Captain Corellis’ Island!
Kefalonia is the setting of Louis de Bernieres΄s novel Captain
Corellis’ Mandolin and readers can have great fun while on
holiday visiting some of the places mentioned in the book.
Location shooting for the film of the novel, starring Nicholas
Gage, John Hurt and Penelope Cruz, took place in summer 2000
mainly around Sami and Anti Sami, a beautiful unspoilt beach just
over the headland.
