Birds on Koutavas Lagoon
Wildlife on Kefalonia
There are many places of interest for the naturist in Kefalonia.
Caretta-caretta, loggerhead sea turtles for example nest on
some of the beaches near to Scala - especially at Mounda
Beach just below Katelios - and one can often be seen around
the fishing boats in Argostoli harbour. Wild horses can be seen
around the Pigi Monastery on the southern slopes of Mount
Aenos, the mountain goats on the mountain itself are
fascinating in their majesty and for bird lovers, the wetlands

nearly always provide some
surprises. There are swans and wild
geese for example on the south side
wetland of the Koutavos Lagoon at
Argostoli and the large wetland to
the north of Lixouri is well worth
visiting. In the villages of Arginia
and Markopoulo on the 15th August
each year, harmless snakes (Virgin's
snakes) appear for a brief time and
are regarded as a good omen.

This large area of western
Kefalonia has much to offer
visitors who want to explore the
island away from the crowds.
There are beautiful beaches,
fascinating old villages,
monasteries, mountains and
wooded areas. Look out especially
for the majestic beach at Petani
which rivals Myrtos in splendour
and breath taking views.

St. Gerasimos
The patron saint of Kefalonia, he was
born in Trikala, became a monk and lived
for some years in the Holy Land and
Zakynthos before settling in 1560 in
Kefalonia. He founded the famous
monastery in the Omala valley and lived
there until he died in 1579. The valley is
dominated by the monastery and is a
wonderful place to enjoy peace and
serenity. There is a great tree lined road
leading to the church and the valley is
famed for its wine. There are processions
on the 15th August and 20th October
each year.

The Castle
of
St. George
Once the
capital of
Kefalonia,
there are two
castles. The
smaller inner
one is
Byzantine
and is about
1000 years old. The larger castle
is Venetian and is 500 years old.
It is open for viewing daily from
the morning till early evening.
Nearby is the church of Ag.
Andreas with a museum of
Byzantine Art. Best of all though
are the views; Argostoli and
Western Kefalonia, Zakynthos
and the south of Kefalonia all lie
before you.
Kefalonia has some of the most
remarkable geological formations in the Ionian region. Chief
amongst these is the system of underground caves, lakes and
rivers known as katavothres the best examples of which can be
seen at Drogarati and Melissani near Sami. Drogarati has a deep
cave system and Melissani an underground lake. Sea water enters
the underground system near Argostoli and emerges again in the
lake at Melissani from where it flows into the sea at Karavomilos.
Here the water forms a small lake with ducks and wild birds
before passing through a water mill to the sea.
Captain Corellis’ Island!
Kefalonia is the setting of Louis de Bernieres΄s novel Captain
Corellis’ Mandolin and readers can have great fun while on
holiday visiting some of the places mentioned in the book.
Location shooting for the film of the novel, starring Nicholas
Gage, John Hurt and Penelope Cruz, took place in summer 2000
mainly around Sami and Anti Sami, a beautiful unspoilt beach just
over the headland.
