22 GREEK WINE In Greece there is a great variety of wines to try and great fun can be had and some surprisingly novel tastes enjoyed if you’re prepared to be adventurous. More important, over the last 15 years most Greek wine makers have invested heavily in modern technology with the result that the wines available are well up to international standards of production and quality. This combined with the fact that most of the grapes used in Greek wine are of historical and indigenous origin makes for some fascinating taste experiences. First, all the major wine producers in Greece have a standard range of good basic wines. At the top of their ranges, they make superlative red and white wines that compare with the best anywhere. In addition, each region has major wine companies that produce top quality local wines. Another fascinating taste treat is provided by the existence of numerous, usually small, local estate wineries that produce a range of exquisite wines that you'll find hard to beat anywhere. Further down the scale, if you eat out at tavernas you may get the opportunity to taste barrel wines (chima). These are mass produced and are similar in quality to house wines but are a lot cheaper. Finally, some family-run tavernas and kafenions offer home made wine from locally grown grapes. Naturally this can vary enormously in taste and quality but can be surprisingly good. What’s more, you will be tasting a wine made in the traditional way; Greeks have been making wine since ancient times and while this tradition is dying out in many areas of Europe, in Greece it continues strong. Each autumn look out for grape making in the villages! CORFIOT WINES For a Greek island, Corfu island has an unusual climate. It is lush and green, wet winters and long dry summers. These conditions make for interesting wine tastes and in recent years Corfu has witnessed a great increase in the number of wineries based on the island. Using modern technology, Corfiot wine companies have taken advantage of the range of conditions and the existence of local varieties of grape to produce some excellent wines. From the sandy soils around Lake Korission in the south, to Ropa Valley in the centre and the mountains in the north, each region can boast its own variety of wine and each has something to offer even the most jaded palettes. KEFALONIAN WINE These wines are amongst the most sought after in Greece for their fine quality and excellent taste. According to Homer they were already well-known at the time of the Trojan Wars, Enjoyed by the Venetians, French and British occupiers of the island, it has only been in the period after the two world wars and following the 1953 earthquake that production methods improved thus enabling the exquisite taste to be captured and, literally bottled. This also meant that production volume increased and consequently they have become widely available. Today Kefalonia has 3 appellations of origin (Robola, Muscat and Mavrodaphne) and there are several wineries using 5 white and two red varieties of grape of which Robola is perhaps the most famous. This deliciously crisp and fruity wine, historically first mentioned in 1544, is produced from grapes grown on the slopes of Mount Ainos and makes a good introduction to the unique wines of the island. This wine is at its best with fish dishes although many people from Kefalonia believe it can be drunk with almost any food and as an aperitif. Try it and see. EPIRUS WINES Wines from the Zitsa region of Epirus were already familiar to wine drinkers in the 17th century. Lord Byron, the famous English poet, wrote about the wines of Zitsa during his stay at Ioannina. The region is in the mountains some 25 kms west of Ioannina where 100 hectares provide the Debina grape used in the making of these wines. The height (700 metres above sea level), climate and welldrained soil combine to make ideal conditions for this grape variety and the wines - semi sparkling and dry whites - have a distinct, well-balanced flavour that makes them so enjoyable. Property in the Ionian The property market in the Ionian, particularly in Corfu, Syvota and Kefalonia, has changed markedly in recent years. This is partly due to the ease with which EU citizens can now purchase land and property in Greek border regions but it is also due to the growing confidence that buyers feel about the long term benefits of investing in the area and in the quality of services offered by estate agents. While upmarket investors have owned houses and land in the Ionian for a number of years, nowadays more and more ordinary people are buying retirement homes or holiday homes here, or simply investing in houses and land for their financial return. There are good reasons why this region is attracting property buyers. Quality of life, for example, no pollution, good weather, great beaches and natural beauty, little or no crime. Air, sea and road connections are better than ever and new developments in the tourist infrastructure such as golf courses, marinas, spa and hotel complexes make the region competitive with other popular destinations in the Mediterranean. In addition there are large expatriate communities throughout the region and major European languages such as English and German are spoken by many local people which makes it easier for a foreigner to settle in. Originally introduced from Japan which has a similar climate, these oranges grow extremely well in the Ionian. Try Koum Kouat on it’s own or as a cocktail mix. It is also delicious when added to fruit salad or to ice-cream. Koum Kouat is available as a liqueur or bottled as a preserve. Preserves and marmalade are also made from the fruit.
