To the north of
Argostoli be sure to
visit Assos, a beautiful
village with spectacular views.
The Venetian castle on the
headland dates from the 16th
century. Nearby is the
beautiful beach at Myrtos
Bay. From the national road
above you can get spectacular
views of the bay. To the south
you will find a beautiful beach
at Ag. Kiriaki. Most of the
beaches in this area are
relatively untouched.
Fiskardo, in the far north of
Kefalonia, is a beautiful and
tranquil fishing village named Myrtos bay and Assos
after Robert Guiscard, the
Norman invader who died near here in 1085. It still retains its old
character having escaped relatively unscathed from the 1953
earthquake. Nearby are ancient remains, Roman and Byzantine
ruins and remnants of the British occupation. Look out for the
lighthouse and other ruins nearby. Great walks and lovely wooded
beaches abound in this area.
turisticamente attrezzato e
offre bei litorali. Sopra la città
si trovano i resti dell’antica
Same e delle rovine romane.
Vicino a questa cittadina,
proprio fuori del villaggio di
Karavolilos, c’è il lago
sotterraneo di Melissanthi, il
quale pui essere esplorato in
barca. Non molto lontano da
esso si ergeva un tempio
dedicato alla ninfa
Melissanthe, da cui
probabilmente ha preso nome
il lago. Sempre vicino a Sami,
si trovano delle grotte, tra le
Fiscardo
quali quella di Drongarati, con belle stalattiti e stalagmiti, e quella
di Angalaki. A nord di Sami si erge Aghia Efimia, un incantevole
villaggio di pescatori.
Skala
This is one of the fastest growing resorts in Kefalonia and
for good reason. It is situated midway between Katelios and
Poros amidst some of the most beautiful beaches in the
Ionian. Long stretches of idyllic sandy beaches stretch each
side of the town and all along the coastline either side can
be found many untouched bays and beaches. Near to Skala
is the famous beach at Mounda which is one of the most
popular turtle nesting grounds on the island and is included
in the Natura 2000 conservation programme. Nearby there
is a restored roof tile kiln showing how tiles were once
made in the area. Skala also has a fine example of a mosaic
floor of a Roman villa dating from the early Christian
period and the remains of a 6th century BC ancient Greek
temple dedicated to Apollo. The modern town, centred on
the pine-covered central square, has many shops, cafes,
bars, tavernas and restaurants nearby so tourists are well
catered for and there are many beach facilities making it an
ideal family resort.
Fiscardo,
Katelios
all’estremità nord di
Cefalonia, è un
grazioso villaggio di
pescatori, che deve il
proprio nome a
Roberto il Guiscardo,
l’invasore normanno
che mori in questa
zona nel 1085. Il
centro mantiene le
caratteristiche
architettoniche
tradizionali, poiché rimase pressoché intatto durante il terremoto del
1953. Nei pressi ci sono resti dell’era paleolitica, rovine bizantine e
alcune tracce dell’occupazione inglese.
A home in Kefalonia?
Forbes Magazine listed Kefalonia the fourth most idyllic place to
live in Europe in a 2008 article. Good food, tranquility, great natural
beauty and a relaxed, hospitable and jovial quality of life were
especially mentioned. In fact there is more to commend the island.
Rebuilt with care, strict safety and attention to traditions after the
1953 earthquake, Kefalonia can now boast a good road network,
marinas, airport and seaports, easy connections to other islands and
the mainland, all with a mild Mediterranean climate thrown in! Add
to this good general facilties such as hospitals, institutions of
learning, museums, galleries, sports and sailing facilities, and you
have a truly idyllic place to live and to spend your holidays in.
Ancient archaelogical sites, mountains, wetlands, turtle nesting
beaches... what more could you want?
