The New Fort and Tenedos
One of the most historically impressive areas
of Corfu Town is the area defined by a semicircle
around the old port. Here you can find
the New Fort, Spilia and the Tenedeos church.
Dominating the area is the New Fort, one of
the most impressive of Mediterranean
fortifications. Building started in 1576 by the
Venetians and was added to by the British - it
is not only well-preserved but has excellent
views of the old town from the summit.
On the way to the New Fort you pass up an
old cobbled lane which has a 17th century
Catholic monastery and domed church of
Tenedos dedicated to the Virgin Mary. This is
one of the most beautiful Catholic churches on
the island. The lane continues through a tunnel
through the walls of the fort to the town
market place
