<strong>Travels</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>France</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Italy</strong>/169<br />

course <strong>the</strong>y did not approve of; <strong>the</strong>y seemed to th<strong>in</strong>k that I might be an<br />

honest fellow, which I confirmed by cry<strong>in</strong>g, vive Ie tiers, sans impositions,<br />

when <strong>the</strong>y gave me a bit of a huzza, <strong>and</strong> I had no more <strong>in</strong>terruption<br />

from <strong>the</strong>m. My miserable French was pretty much on a par with<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir own patois. I got, however, ano<strong>the</strong>r cockade, which I took care to<br />

have so fastened as to lose it no more. I do not half like travell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> such<br />

an unquiet <strong>and</strong> ferment<strong>in</strong>g moment; one is not secure for an hour beforeh<strong>and</strong>.—35<br />

miles.<br />

27th. To Besancon; <strong>the</strong> country mounta<strong>in</strong>, rock, <strong>and</strong> wood, above<br />

<strong>the</strong> river; some scenes are f<strong>in</strong>e. I had not arrived an hour before I saw a<br />

peasant pass <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>n on horseback, followed by an officer of <strong>the</strong> guard<br />

bourgeois, of which <strong>the</strong>re are 1200 here, <strong>and</strong> 200 <strong>und</strong>er arms, <strong>and</strong> his<br />

parti-coloured detachment, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>se by some <strong>in</strong>fantry <strong>and</strong> cavalry. I<br />

asked why <strong>the</strong> militia took <strong>the</strong> pas of <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g’s troops? For a very good<br />

reason, <strong>the</strong>y replied, <strong>the</strong> troops would be attacked <strong>and</strong> knocked on <strong>the</strong><br />

head, but <strong>the</strong> populace will not resist <strong>the</strong> milice. This peasant, who is a<br />

rich proprietor, applied for a guard to protect his house <strong>in</strong> a village<br />

where <strong>the</strong>re is much pl<strong>und</strong>er<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> burn<strong>in</strong>g, The mischiefs which have<br />

been perpetrated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> country, towards <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>s <strong>and</strong> Vesoul, are<br />

numerous <strong>and</strong> shock<strong>in</strong>g. Mary chateaus have been burnt; o<strong>the</strong>rs pl<strong>und</strong>ered,<br />

<strong>the</strong> seigneurs hunted down like wild beasts, <strong>the</strong>ir wives <strong>and</strong> daughters<br />

ravished, <strong>the</strong>ir papers <strong>and</strong> titles burnt, <strong>and</strong> all <strong>the</strong>ir property destroys:<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>se abom<strong>in</strong>ations not <strong>in</strong>flicted on marked persons, who<br />

were odious for <strong>the</strong>ir former conduct or pr<strong>in</strong>ciples, but an <strong>in</strong>discrim<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g<br />

bl<strong>in</strong>d rage for <strong>the</strong> love of pl<strong>und</strong>er. Robbers, galley-slaves, <strong>and</strong> villa<strong>in</strong>s<br />

of all denom<strong>in</strong>ations have collected <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>stigated <strong>the</strong> peasants to<br />

commit all sorts of outrages. Some gentlemen at <strong>the</strong> table d’hôte <strong>in</strong>formed<br />

me that letters were received from <strong>the</strong> Maconois, <strong>the</strong> Lyonois,<br />

Auvergne, Dauph<strong>in</strong>e, etc., <strong>and</strong> that similar commotions <strong>and</strong> mischiefs<br />

were perpetrat<strong>in</strong>g everywhere; <strong>and</strong> that it was expected <strong>the</strong>y would pervade<br />

<strong>the</strong> whole k<strong>in</strong>gdom. The backwardness of <strong>France</strong> is beyond credibility<br />

<strong>in</strong> everyth<strong>in</strong>g that perta<strong>in</strong>s to <strong>in</strong>telligence. From Strasbourg hi<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

I have not been able to see a newspaper. Here I asked for <strong>the</strong> Cab<strong>in</strong>et<br />

Literaire. None. The gazettes? At <strong>the</strong> coffee-house. Very easily replied,<br />

but not so easily fo<strong>und</strong>. Noth<strong>in</strong>g but <strong>the</strong> Gazette de <strong>France</strong>, for which,<br />

at this period, a man of common sense would not give one sol. To four<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r coffee-houses; at some no paper at all, not even <strong>the</strong> Mercure; at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Caffé Militaire, <strong>the</strong> Courier de l’Europe a fortnight old; <strong>and</strong> welldressed<br />

people are now talk<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> news of two or three weeks past,
