<strong>Travels</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>France</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Italy</strong>/79<br />

tation of ma<strong>the</strong>matical <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r curious <strong>in</strong>struments to every part of<br />

Europe, <strong>and</strong> to <strong>France</strong> amongst <strong>the</strong> rest. Nor is this new, for <strong>the</strong> apparatus<br />

with which <strong>the</strong> French academicians measured a degree <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> polar<br />

circle was made by Mr. George Graham. 3 Ano<strong>the</strong>r eng<strong>in</strong>e Monsieur<br />

Lavoisier showed us was an electrical apparatus enclosed <strong>in</strong> a balloon,<br />

for try<strong>in</strong>g electrical experiments <strong>in</strong> any sort of air. His pond of quicksilver<br />

is considerable, conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g 250 lb., <strong>and</strong> his water apparatus very<br />

great, but his furnaces did not seem so well calculated for <strong>the</strong> higher<br />

degrees of heat as some o<strong>the</strong>rs I have seen. I was glad to f<strong>in</strong>d this gentleman<br />

splendidly lodged, <strong>and</strong> with every appearance of a man of considerable<br />

fortune. This ever gives one pleasure: <strong>the</strong> employments of a state<br />

can never be <strong>in</strong> better h<strong>and</strong>s than of men who thus apply <strong>the</strong> superfluity<br />

of <strong>the</strong>ir wealth. From <strong>the</strong> use that is generally made of money, one would<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k it <strong>the</strong> assistance of all o<strong>the</strong>rs of <strong>the</strong> least consequence <strong>in</strong> affect<strong>in</strong>g<br />

any bus<strong>in</strong>ess truly useful to mank<strong>in</strong>d, many of <strong>the</strong> great discoveries that<br />

have enlarged <strong>the</strong> horizon of science hav<strong>in</strong>g been <strong>in</strong> this respect <strong>the</strong><br />

result of means seem<strong>in</strong>gly <strong>in</strong>adequate to <strong>the</strong> end: <strong>the</strong> energetic exertions<br />

of ardent m<strong>in</strong>ds burst<strong>in</strong>g from obscurity, <strong>and</strong> break<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> b<strong>and</strong>s <strong>in</strong>flicted<br />

by poverty, perhaps by distress. To <strong>the</strong> hotel des Invalids, <strong>the</strong><br />

major of which establishment had <strong>the</strong> goodness to show <strong>the</strong> whole of it.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g to Monsieur Lomond, a very <strong>in</strong>genious <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>ventive<br />

mechanic who has made an improvement of <strong>the</strong> jenny for sp<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g cotton.<br />

Common mach<strong>in</strong>es are said to make too hard a thread for certa<strong>in</strong><br />

fabrics, but this forms it loose <strong>and</strong> spongy. In electricity he has made a<br />

remarkable discovery; you write two or three words on a paper; he takes<br />

it with him <strong>in</strong>to a room, <strong>and</strong> turns a mach<strong>in</strong>e enclosed <strong>in</strong> a cyl<strong>in</strong>drical<br />

case, at <strong>the</strong> top of which is an electrometer, a small f<strong>in</strong>e pith ball; a wire<br />

connects with a similar cyl<strong>in</strong>der <strong>and</strong> electrometer <strong>in</strong> a distant apartment;<br />

<strong>and</strong> his wife, by remark<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> correspond<strong>in</strong>g motions of <strong>the</strong> ball, writes<br />

down <strong>the</strong> words <strong>the</strong>y <strong>in</strong>dicate: from which it appears that he has formed<br />

an alphabet of motions. As <strong>the</strong> length of <strong>the</strong> wire makes no difference <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> effect, a correspondence might be carried on at any distance: with<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> without a besieged town, for <strong>in</strong>stance; or for a purpose much more<br />

worthy, <strong>and</strong> a thous<strong>and</strong> times more harmless, between two lovers prohibited<br />

or prevented from any better connection. Whatever this use may<br />

be, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vention is beautiful. Monsieur Lomond has many o<strong>the</strong>r curious<br />

mach<strong>in</strong>es, all <strong>the</strong> entire work of his own h<strong>and</strong>s: mechanical <strong>in</strong>vention<br />

seems to be <strong>in</strong> him a natural propensity. In <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Comedie<br />

Francaise. Mola did <strong>the</strong> Bourru Bienfaisant, <strong>and</strong> it is not easy for act-
