<strong>Travels</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>France</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Italy</strong>/47<br />
olives, which are young, thriv<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> well enclosed, yet <strong>the</strong> soil is so<br />
stony that no earth is visible; some of his walls are four feet thick, <strong>and</strong><br />
one of <strong>the</strong>m twelve thick <strong>and</strong> five high, whence it seems he th<strong>in</strong>ks mov<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> stones a necessary improvement, which I much question. He has<br />
built three or four new farmhouses; I suppose he resides on this estate<br />
for improv<strong>in</strong>g it. I hope he does not serve; that no moonsh<strong>in</strong>e pursuit<br />
may divert him from a conduct honourable to himself <strong>and</strong> beneficial to<br />
his country.—Leav<strong>in</strong>g Sauve, I was much struck with a large tract of<br />
l<strong>and</strong>, seem<strong>in</strong>gly noth<strong>in</strong>g but huge rocks; yet most of it enclosed <strong>and</strong><br />
planted with <strong>the</strong> most <strong>in</strong>dustrious attention. Every man has an olive, a<br />
mulberry, an almond, or a peach-tree, <strong>and</strong> v<strong>in</strong>es scattered among <strong>the</strong>m;<br />
so that <strong>the</strong> whole gro<strong>und</strong> is covered with <strong>the</strong> oddest mixture of <strong>the</strong>se<br />
plants <strong>and</strong> bulg<strong>in</strong>g rocks that can be conceived. The <strong>in</strong>habitants of this<br />
village deserve encouragement for <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>dustry, <strong>and</strong> if I was a French<br />
m<strong>in</strong>ister <strong>the</strong>y should have it. They would soon turn all <strong>the</strong> deserts aro<strong>und</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong>to gardens. Such a knot of active husb<strong>and</strong>men, who turn <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
rocks <strong>in</strong>to scenes of fertility, because I suppose THEIR OWN, would do <strong>the</strong><br />
same by <strong>the</strong> wastes, if animated by <strong>the</strong> same omnipotent pr<strong>in</strong>ciple. D<strong>in</strong>e<br />
at St. Hyppolite, with eight protestant merchants return<strong>in</strong>g home to<br />
Rouverge from <strong>the</strong> fair of Beaucaire; as we parted at <strong>the</strong> same time, we<br />
travelled toge<strong>the</strong>r; <strong>and</strong> from <strong>the</strong>ir conversation, I learned some circumstances<br />
of which I wanted to be <strong>in</strong>formed; <strong>the</strong>y told me also that mulberries<br />
extend beyond Vigan, but <strong>the</strong>n, <strong>and</strong> especially about Milhaud, almonds<br />
take <strong>the</strong>ir place, <strong>and</strong> are <strong>in</strong> very great quantities.<br />
My Rouverge friends pressed me to pass with <strong>the</strong>m to Milhaud <strong>and</strong><br />
Rodez, assured me that <strong>the</strong> cheapness of <strong>the</strong>ir prov<strong>in</strong>ce was so great that<br />
it would tempt me to live some time amongst <strong>the</strong>m. That I might have a<br />
house at Milhaud, of four tolerable rooms on a floor furnished, for twelve<br />
louis a year; <strong>and</strong> live <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> utmost plenty with all my family, if I would<br />
br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m over, for 100 louis a year: that <strong>the</strong>re were many families of<br />
noblesse who subsisted on fifty, <strong>and</strong> even on twenty-five a year. Such<br />
anecdotes of cheapness are only curious when considered <strong>in</strong> a political<br />
light, as contribut<strong>in</strong>g on one h<strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong> welfare of <strong>in</strong>dividuals; <strong>and</strong> on<br />
<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, as contribut<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> prosperity, wealth, <strong>and</strong> power of <strong>the</strong><br />
k<strong>in</strong>gdom; if I should meet with many such <strong>in</strong>stances, <strong>and</strong> also with o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />
directly contrary, it will be necessary to consider <strong>the</strong>m more at large.—<br />
30 miles.<br />
30th. Go<strong>in</strong>g out of Gange, I was surprised to f<strong>in</strong>d by far <strong>the</strong> greatest<br />
exertion <strong>in</strong> irrigation which I had yet seen <strong>in</strong> <strong>France</strong>; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n pass by
