On pages 40 and 41, Mike Higgs from Heywood
Market provides a full summary of the day
accompanied by some fabulous photos. We are
personally very grateful to Mike who supports us by
writing so many fabulous articles for our magazines!
On page 43 the Friends of Hopwood Park write about
the event organised in June which was attended by
over 120 children of all ages. There were all kinds of
activities on offer including circus skills workshop, arts
and crafts and face painting. The Group are currently
planning more events like this and all the info can be
found on their Face book page. Our regular ‘From the
Archives’ feature continues this month with Gary
Heywood- Everett focusing on the Rochdale born
comedian Norman Evans on pages 32 and 33.
We hope you have a great month and look forward to
our next issue which will be the bumper
August/September magazine before the summer
break.
Until next month…..
Chippendale Hearing Services
www.chippendalehearing.co.uk
HEARING PROTECTION
IS IMPORTANT
Elephants have exceptional hearing ability which helps them ‘tune into’ things such as thunderstorms and explains the well
observed phenomenon that elephants are always the first animals to move towards rain. Living in the North West means
we don’t have to travel far to find rain, but if we do not protect our hearing there are lots of problems which could develop
which we could have avoided travelling towards!
At Chippendale Hearing Services we provide custom made ear plugs for a variety of needs:
l Musician Plugs
l Motorcylist Plugs
l Swim Plugs
l Sleepsound Plugs
Prior to their purchase an appointment is required for impressions to be taken as all the above are custom made for you.
Look after yourself and protect your hearing.
Contact us by telephone or email
Visit our new consulting rooms at : 1st Floor 675 Edenfield Road Norden Rochdale OL11 5XE
Direct mobile: 07900 466806 Email: chippendalehearing@hotmail.co.uk
At Chippendale Hearing Services, we pride ourselves on providing
the highest standards of professional audiological care, personal
attention and continued aftercare. Both Patricia Chippendale and
Sandra Neumann have a wealth of experience spanning over 35
years, having worked in local NHS audiology departments, social
services, the private sector and a national charity for deaf people.
WE ARE HERE TO HELP YOU HEAR.
Time for understanding
Most people ignore their ears until something changes. Explaining how
hearing loss or ringing in the ears can affect each person is complex and
needs specialist professional guidance. At Chippendale Hearing our customers
range from 16 to 98 years young and frequently comment on how we gave
them time to explain their own situation and needs by asking various
questions, thus allowing each person to make informed choices.
Here’s a comment from someone who recently visited us:
“I have recently suffered from hearing problems as well as tinnitus in my
left ear which means that I have a constant ringing. Having always had
perfectly good hearing, it was a very stressful and frightening time for me
and the treatment which I received from the NHS did nothing to put my
mind at rest. It was very much a ‘one in one out’ approach and I came
away feeling very upset and isolated. However my visits to both Pat and
Sandra at Chippendale Hearing were a completely different experience.
They took the time to listen to me and were extremely caring and helpful
in their approach. They talked me through what to expect during the
hearing test and after this they carefully explained what was happening in
my ear and what I could expect in the future. I didn’t feel as isolated and
I know that they are always at the end of the phone should I need to
speak to them or see them again”.
Kate Chapman
Time to get the best
We offer a holistic approach and a one stop shop service of information,
hearing tests and/or specialist equipment and ear moulds for protection
against noise - customers comment that they absolutely love the ACS
motorcyclist moulds and musician moulds with appropriate filters.
As specialist professionals we are expanding our service and will soon be
opening additional consulting rooms on the first floor of 675 Edenfield Road
Norden Rochdale.
Heywood in Bloom
Update
We now have the date
for the RHS judging
for Heywood and it is
Thursday 14th July.
We have just
celebrated our
towns 1940’s day
with a fabulous display of
aeroplanes and army vehicles on show. The
town was packed and entertainment was ongoing throughout
the day. Heywood in Bloom had its tombola stall on the front
street which helps to raise money towards funding our flower
displays. The weather was perfect for the day and the town was
buzzing with people really getting into the mood and enjoying
the fun.
The month of June is a very
busy month and has seen lots
of planting going on all around
the town. New raised planting
has taken place at The Brick
House and new flower beds
have been created
throughout the town. The
hanging baskets have been
put up and extra brackets
are going up on new
businesses who have joined
us this year. Crown Oil Ltd at
Heap Bridge have joined our route
this year along with the Crown
Public house who have now
purchased one of our banners and
put up hanging baskets.
The memorial gardens in the centre

of town have now seen the dedication of four new
wrought iron poppy benches. The dedication was held
on Saturday 18th June to commemorate the Battle of
the Somme and followed by a parade through town.
Two of the new poppy benches were purchased with
funding from the Heywood Rotary Group.
The roundabout at junction 19 has now had two
giant plant pots put in place and planted up with
colourful flowers. The plant pots have been
purchased by the Heywood Rotary Club who have
worked tirelessly within our town to raise the
funding.
We have also been putting lots of hours into getting
our allotment ready and planted up. Volunteers have
dug over all the plots (which had grown some huge
weeds) and planted lots of vegetables. The
greenhouses are well stocked with tomato and
cucumber plants which already have some well
grown cucumbers on them. The fruit trees are now
enjoying the extra light and space after the park
rangers cut back the overgrown area behind them.
We would like to say a big thank you to Bob,
Tommy & Steve who worked hard all day to
chop down a jungle of brambles and selfseeded
bushes and trees.
We also want to say thank you to Heywood
Scaffolding who kindly donated a dozen
planks so we can build raised beds for the
local primary school to use. They even
delivered them free of charge!
We have recently had some new helpers
come forward to work in the allotment
Steven and Colin. We still have room in the
allotment for volunteers to come and spend
some time call into our headquarters at
TOPS (The Old Police Station) on Hind Hill
St if you are interested.
From the
archives
Norman Evans
Through TV, film and radio we are familiar with celebrities in our homes, but things were
very different prior to the 1950’s. Then, variety took place in theatres and tended to take
on a local or regional character. Furthermore, many of those that took to the stage were
ordinary people, often with ordinary jobs and living just down the road. No security-gated
compounds for the stars in the 1920’s and 1930’s. One such star emerging from Rochdale
was the comedian Norman Evans.
Norman was born in Rochdale on the 11th June 1901 and after attending Castlemere Council School worked
first as an office boy at Arrow Mills in Castleton, then for Swailes Ltd in Milnrow (formerly Lancashire Paper
Tubes Company on Molesworth Street) initially in the office but then as a salesman or ‘rep,’ securing orders
for the parent company. Although the pay was poor, it seems that Norman was good at his job. One incident
suggests this as well as his sense of fun. Norman went to Sykes of Halifax – a particularly hard firm to get
an order - and was quickly shown the door. In a local café he drew their manager as a huge monster
chasing Norman down the road. He returned to the company, showed the cartoon to the boss and got his
order ! He was as good at ‘reading’ his customers as he was at reading a theatre audience, another of his
tricks being to imitate - accurately – his bosses and his customers.
One of his work colleagues told me that Norman owned a Riley car which was constantly breaking down
due to the petrol being ‘gravity feed.’ Norman didn’t understand this and when the mechanics ‘fixed’ it
(by turning on a pump !) Norman was amazed and rewarded them with a packet of cigarettes. Stories of
his practical joking at work are still told, for example his pretending that there was a mouse in the office
to frighten the office girls.
After work, Norman would indulge in his hobby – variety and theatricals. The late 20’s and 30’s was an
era of the local concert party, Masonic Halls and ‘smoking clubs’ (all male) where Norman practiced his
comedy and ventriloquist acts. Sometimes he would play for Sunday Schools, charging one guinea, and
those who saw him said that he was never ‘smutty’ or crude, relying on good Lancashire humour to
entertain.
Talented as a comedian, pianist, trumpet player (and cartoonist), Norman left his rep’s job for a career in
show business in 1934. Gracie Fields saw him at a charity show at the Rochdale Hippodrome in 1931 and
being further alerted to his talents by a friend, gave him an audition in her dressing room. Impressed, she
put him on her Friday night bill at the Chiswick Empire, knowing that Sir Oswald Stoll, the impresario,
would be there. Stoll was impressed too and booked him for the Alhambra two weeks later. By 1935 Archie

Pitt had him under contract for the tour of ‘Mr Tower of London.’
When he left his job he said that he would come back to see them
in Milnrow driving a Cadillac rather than his ‘tin can,’ and he
did, for an unrecorded Workers Playtime at the Butterworth Hall
Mill.
On the national stage his career soon blossomed, appearing at
the Royal Variety shows of 1936, 1947 and 1951, even
appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show in America in 1949. Norman
also made appearances in films just after the war and
regularly appeared in pantomime – always as dame. He is
best remembered though, for his comedy portrayal of Fanny
Fairbottom, a toothless Lancastrian woman gossiping ‘Over
the Garden Wall.’ These one-sided monologues would be
about neighbours’ illnesses and good-natured local intrigue
– often done in mime or silent mouthing when the subject
got too hot or risqué. Acknowledging his debt to Norman
Evans, Les Dawson recreated a similar gossip on TV in the
1970’s.
When variety dried up in the 1950’s Norman Evans returned to pantomime but a car accident near
to his home in Fulwood, Preston, resulted in Norman losing en eye. Some years of recovery later, Norman
made a comeback, working on his own TV series - The Norman Evans Show - between 1956 and 1958. By
the early 1960’s he was performing throughout a summer season at Butlin’s Holiday camp in Pwllheli
which he enjoyed though by that time in poor health. His final TV appearance was on Comedy Bandbox
in 1962 shortly before his death. He was honoured posthumously with a plaque
at the Manchester Opera House in 1999.
Norman Evans was buried at Carleton
Cemetery in Blackpool, on his headstone the
words ‘Norman’s Last Garden Wall.’
If you have any memories of Norman Evans, I’d
be delighted to hear from you and add them to
a growing Rochdale archive on the subject.
AND IT’S GETTING BETTER,
GROWING STRONGER!
(Respect to Mamma Cass born 1941)
Saturday 18th June saw Heywood’s 1940s event gain even more visitors and exhibitors than
previous years. Unlike the previous two years, the rain held off all day. The bunting and flags
had already been fluttering in the breeze for a few weeks previously. The Queen's 90th
birthday started the celebrations and dovetailed neatly into the event.
This year also sees the centenary of the Battle of the Somme
and this was also commemorated with a remembrance
service opened by the Mayor Cllr. Ray Dutton. The service
was followed by the dedication of benches in the Memorial
Gardens donated by various, local organisations.
Earlier in the day trailers had arrived carrying 3 planes, the
Hurricane and the ME109 were sited on Hill St. together
with Military vehicles and period exhibits. The iconic
Spitfire was delivered to Heywood Market Precinct where it
was in the company of traders’ stalls, face painting by
BoHo Beauty, a Bouncy Castle and the Jeep and armed
petrol dump owned by Tony “Jeep" Wilson. Later in the
morning, a vintage bus, courtesy of ELR brought the
evacuees safely home to their waiting Mums and Dads.
The planes always draw great interest with patient
queues waiting to take advantage of the photo
opportunities that they create, thanks go to "Spitfire
Sharon" for managing this task with skill and
humour.
The Banjo Man, Bilko and many other entertainers
kept the crowds amused all day. Tom and Simon
from the Folksy Theatre group did their bit to their
normal, entertaining high standard and assisted Hey
Kids in showcasing their talents.
The interactive “Somme" trailer drew big crowds
together with the re enactors and period exhibits,
contributed to the exciting atmosphere on the
"encampment".
Early afternoon saw the military led parade make its way around town with eager crowds gathering all along the route to cheer
them on. The Concert at St. Lukes also drew a huge audience who were treated to a variety of local and professional acts. There
were many fantastic comments passed to the "turns" after their performances.
40 Visit our website www.streetwisemag.co.uk for all the info about the Streetwise magazines

There were numerous, new additions and attractions to the
event as existing and new businesses committed their time and
efforts to the day. All had great reactions from the crowds that
formed. These new additions help to develop the event further.
Those who saw " Patelvis" down at JazBa will know what I
mean.
The day continued until just before 4.00pm when suddenly,
out of a grey sky we heard the unforgettable drone of a Rolls
Royce Merlin engine. Suddenly an Iconic Spitfire broke
through cloud in the skies above Heywood!
It passed twice over the town, dipped its wings in salute to
the planes on the ground and the crowds and flew off
towards the horizon. A fitting finale to a truly fantastic
day in our town.
Thanks must go to all who gave their time and effort to
the event. Township, the Business Group, local traders,
Scout Groups, Cadets and many many more, far too many
to mention here but you know who you are.
My personal thanks also go to the businesses of Heywood
Market Precinct, the Board, traders and staff of Magic
Market for their support, the Business Group, Township and
Sharon for her efforts and patience with me.
Sam and his Network Scouts did a superb job on the day
and Pam and Ole from The Plaice to Eat excelled themselves with a fantastic
Tombola result. Oh and not forgetting all the "Volunteers" who turned out at short
notice, to assemble and dismantle the Spitfire under the expert guidance of “Ken"
from War and Peace.
Last but by no means least, the people of Heywood...." we'll be back”!!
