has also brought improvements<br />
in safety?<br />
The goal of Drivewise is to<br />
encourage people to drive more<br />
safely and it is definitely doing<br />
that. The average customers are<br />
earning savings, which gives you<br />
an indication that they are more<br />
s e l f - a w a re o f s a f e t y, o n a<br />
consistent basis. We invite anyone<br />
to participate, though, not just the<br />
ultra-safe drivers and we do not<br />
surcharge for poor driving. The<br />
worst you can do is earn zero<br />
savings. Our goal is to educate<br />
about safe driving habits and then<br />
reward and encourage it through<br />
our various savings opportunities.<br />

Allstate is different from others in<br />
the industry. We keep the device<br />
in the vehicle or you use the<br />
mobile app in perpetuity. You<br />
don’t use it only for a few days or<br />
a few trips or even 3 months.<br />
We’re able to continue to collect<br />
driving data and perform our<br />
analysis and provide savings for<br />
the way the customer continues<br />
to drive.<br />

From that standpoint, we do it<br />
more as an ongoing relationship<br />
and less of a one-time test.<br />
So have you been able to<br />
observe actual improvements in<br />
the way people drive?<br />
Telematics has proven that if<br />
p e o p l e a r e d r i v i n g l e s s<br />
aggressively, at a lower speed<br />
and not in the middle of the<br />
night, then they are safer. These<br />
are broad truths in the industry.<br />
If we now think of the benefits<br />
o f t h e a p p f o r A l l s t a t e ,<br />
particularly compared with a<br />
dongle solution?<br />
It is the engagement of the<br />
customer. In the dongle solution,<br />
there is a device in your car and<br />
the data is coming back into the<br />
back office and you engage with<br />
them differently.<br />
With the app, you are always up,<br />
front and centre with them.<br />
When you go one step further<br />
and add in Allstate Rewards, every<br />
day you want to look at the app to<br />
know how many points you<br />
received today for your safe<br />
driving.<br />
And then in the future, as we layer<br />
on third party apps or other apps<br />
that we develop, there will be<br />
even more reasons to come there<br />
every day to engage with Allstate.<br />
So if you think of the tenant<br />
behind Allstate, it is being a<br />
trusted advisor to our customers.<br />
Drivewise is just an extension of<br />
t h a t t r u s t e d a d v i s o r<br />
relationship: we’re helping you<br />
to be safer; we’re easing some of<br />
the pains in your life and we add<br />
incremental value.<br />
We are making an ongoing push<br />
to have Drivewise Mobile<br />
launched in more and more<br />
states. It will be in more than half<br />
the country in the first half 2016.<br />
Overall we are very pleased with<br />
the level of engagement we<br />
achieve from it. Of course we will<br />
continue to iterate on that going<br />
forward.<br />

Have you found that the data<br />
from the app was as predictive<br />
as data from OBD dongles?<br />

We’re comfortable with the level<br />
of accuracy that we’re getting. We<br />
continue to learn, iterate and<br />
make improvements as we keep<br />
rolling out these programmes.<br />
It seems that you have chosen<br />
to integrate the full telematics<br />
and scoring solution yourself. Is<br />
that correct?<br />
We have. One of the core<br />
competencies of our innovation<br />
team in-house is the ability to<br />
ingest data and to perform the<br />
analytics of it. We have become<br />
v e r y g o o d a t d e v e l o p i n g<br />
telematics solutions as well.<br />
Where I think the third parties are<br />
more likely to come in could be<br />
leveraging our platform to<br />
produce apps that could build<br />
extra value for our customers in<br />
areas that we wouldn’t necessarily<br />
want to or be good at developing<br />
applications for.<br />
One such app that we have<br />
rolled out recently is Allstate<br />
Roadside. We are using an API of<br />
our connected services platform<br />
so that you can now initiate<br />
roadside assistance help inside<br />
the Drivewise app.<br />
