ARTISTS WHO PORTRAY PRESIDENTS AND PRESI- 

DENTIAL HOPEFULS 

Gilbert Stuart was the first presidential portrait 

artist. He painted the official portrait of George 

Washington. The image from the portrait of Washington 

appeared on the one dollar bill for over a 

century. He then went on to paint portraits of the 

next 5 presidents of the United States. Images 

from these portraits have been used on postage 

stamps, and in school classrooms and other public 

buildings throughout the 19th and 20th century. 

Originals of his paintings are hanging in museums 

in the United States and the UK. 

Official portraits of presidents have sometimes 

depicted stern and unusual poses. Bachelor 

president, James Buchanan had a male friend by 

the name of Rufus King. Buchanan had a difficult 

administration leading up to the Civil War and is 

sometimes accused of aggravating the incidences 

leading to the war. He was also suspected of 

being gay with his male friend around him 

daily. Andrew Jackson, a sometimes rude and 

crude, presidential predecessor of Buchanan 

nicknamed the couple “Miss Nancy” and “Aunt 

Fancy”.Meritt Chase the portrait artist who painted 

Buckanan’s official portrait painted him with a 

high collar and a stiff pose. 

Lincoln Monument in the Washington mall. There 

were also several life size nude statues of the 

current presidential candidate, Donald Trump that 

were created by the artist, Joshua “Ginger” Monroe. 

Monroe was commissioned by a group titled 

INDECLINE. There were 5 identical plastic statues 

of Trump completed and displayed in different 

cities on the same morning this past summer. The 

commission was titled, “The Emperor Has No Balls”. 

The statue demonstrates this title along with a 

very small penis. This put down derived from 

Trump’s referral to some of his opponents having 

small genitals, compared to his, as was demonstrated 

by his hands being larger than some. The 

artist, who had been a Trump supporter changed 

abruptly after Trump criticized a New York reporter 

who had a physical disability. He says the mold 

of the statue is still intact and he plans to make 

more to be displayed throughout the country and 

in Europe. There are many stories of artists who 

have created paintings and sculptures of famous 

politicians. We need to recognize these artists and 

others, for their contribution to political history 

and posterity.

President Bill Clinton was the first president to 

have an African American artist, Simmie Knox, 

paint the official portrait. The official portrait 

of George W. Bush, painted by Texas artist, John 

Howard Sanden, was unveiled at a White House 

ceremony in May of 2012. He brought along an 

entourage of family and a couple hundred cheering 

and obnoxious former staff members including, 

Donald Rumsfeld and Karl Rove. As Bush pulled 

the cover from the portrait he said to the Obama’s, 

“Thank you so much for inviting our rowdy friends 

to my hanging.”

Palm Springs Gay Softball League Holds Clinics for New Players in Preparation for New Season 

The Palm Springs Gay Softball League (PSGSL) is inviting anybody interested in learning more about the 

league to come to one of the league’s new player clinics. 

The clinics will be held on Sunday, September 11, and Sunday, September 18. Both clinics run from 9 to 11 

a.m. at Demuth Park’s Field No. 5, located in Palm Springs on Mesquite Avenue, just east of El Cielo Road. 

(Park in the lot at Nueva Vista Drive and Mesquite Avenue.) 

These clinics are open to anybody—not just members of the LGBT community—who is at least 18 years old. 

At these clinics, experienced coaches will offer information about the league and assess potential players’ skill 

levels, to make sure everyone is matched with an appropriate team. 

“We have teams for everyone, from beginners to players with a ton of experience,” says Ross Benson, the 

commissioner of the PSGSL. “As long as you can have fun, you’re welcome.” 

Benson suggests that potential players come to the clinics dressed appropriately, and that they bring water. 

The fall season kicks off Sunday, Oct. 2. All games are played on Sundays at Big League Dreams in Cathedral 

City.

Potato Chips: If you can’t just eat one potato chip, blame it on Chef George 

Crum. He reportedly created the salty snack in 1853 at Moon’s Lake House 

near Saratoga Springs, New York. Fed up with a customer who continuously 

sent his fried potatoes back, complaining that they were soggy and not 

crunchy enough, Crum sliced the potatoes as thin as possible, fried them in 

hot grease, then doused them with salt. The customer loved them and “Saratoga 

Chips “ quickly became a popular item at the lodge and throughout New 

England. Eventually, the chips were mass-produced for home consumption, 

but since they were stored in barrels or tins, they quickly went stale. Then, in 

the 1920’s, Laura Scudder invented the airtight bag by ironing together two 

pieces of waxed paper, which kept the chips fresher longer. Today, chips are 

packaged in plastic or foil bags and come in a variety of flavors, including 

sour cream and onion, barbecue, and salt and vinegar.

Oh the end of summer! Finally turned the 

AC off and opened the windows. What a 

great night and still early September! Let’s 

hope the rest of the month stays like this. 

As I mentioned last week the local elections 

are beginning to percolate. Besides candidate 

forums the door – to – door walking 

is set to begin and watch your mail box! 

We will soon be inundated with flyers, brochures 

and oversized postcards from candidates 

for every conceivable office (of course 

the ones from me are the best!) 

After looking at Fox, CNN and MSNBC 

coverage of the presidential campaign, I 

am thankful that California is ignored by 

the candidates. I just don’t think I could 

stomach having to listen to the bile and 

racist diatribes from Trump. I was looking 

forward to the debates, but the Washington 

Post said that Trump was still thinking of 

boycotting them because he “didn’t like the 

moderators”. All candidates – IT IS NOT 

ABOUT YOU – It is about the voters!!! 

I got my first invite to an event for a candidate 

for College of the Desert Trustee – 

Fred Jandt. I’m going to go as I have some 

thoughts about the best place for a west 

valley campus (spoiler alert – it’s not the 

old PS Mall) and how they can best serve 

the students of Cathedral City. It’s a great 

school and gives lots of opportunities for 

our young people but could so much more. 

They also have a bond issue on the November 

ballot that we all need to support. 

As we get closer to the election I will try to 

say a few words about each city (or school 

district) to share my thoughts on the candidates. 

Take them as my thoughts, not 

Desert Daily Guide’s or the City of Cathedral 

City. And my choices, will not just be 

Democrats – there are good Republicans 

out there – they are just misguided on some 

things!
