SPCA Bikers Breakfast raises big bucks for King SPCA
DESPITE poor weather and
poor attendance at this
years Rotary SPCA Bikers
Breakfast held at the Dale
College rugby fields at the
weekend an impressive
amount of close to R26 000
was raised for the King SP-
CA.
This event takings were
matched by King Rotary to
make a handsome figure of
just short of R26 000, according
to SPCA chairperson Annette
Rademeyer.
A raffle draw added to the
coffers and several bikers
walked off with great prizes.
'We sold 70 breakfasts,' said
Annette adding that she was
not sure how many biker
attended – I didn’t count
them but I estimate maybe
20 – 30.
'We usually have 150 and
more. The weather played a
huge role,' Annette said.
The SPCA would like to thank
the KWT Rotary Club and
Anns for their hard work and
support on Sunday.
'Many of them would have
liked to stay warm under the
duvet I’m sure, but they
came out and worked to turn
it into a very successful
event,'she said.
'To the SPCA committee who
jumped in and helped and to
the bikers - you guys
rock...some of them (the
bikers) even arrived in their
cars instead of on their bikes
because of the rain but

support they did,' said Annette.
She said the event was the
SPCA's biggest annual fundraiser.
'This year Rotary decided to
match what we raised... up
to the amount of R12
000...thank you so much to
the Rotary Club for your support.
'I am truly humbled by this
fantastic result - despite the
rain. But I am happy for the
rain too because we need
grass to grow for the animals
who have nothing to eat in
the veld so it was a win/ win
all round.'
One of the highlights of the
event was a cash donation
of R5 000 by motor bike
clubs Skull Wings MCC and
Carbon MC.
“We raised the money at an
event called the Iron Saddle
held in Winterstrand,' said
biker Shane Luck.
“We decided this year that we
would donate the proceeds
from the event to the King
SPCA,' he said.
'The reason they made the
donation to the SPCA is that
Shane’s dog was sick with
billiary some time ago and
he tried to get help for the
dog and no one would help
him.
'He drove all the way to King
to bring his dog to the SPCA
for treatment and was
helped immediately without
any demands being made
for money up front. His dog
survived the billiary and he
still has it today.
'He was struck by the compassion
showed towards his
dog and the willingness of
King SPCA staffers to assist
him when he desperately
needed help for his dog,'
said Annette.
The event was attended by
motorcyclists from Harley
Davidson, Ulysses, Tribal
Cats, Midnight, Motto Mecca,
Carbon, Skulls, Unforgiven
and Border Bastards.
The car of the event went to
a BMW i8 owned by Gordon
Nicholson of East London.
Miss SPCA this year was
Jenny Moss who collected
funds by “walking around
with an SPCA money box.'
“I am a strict vegetarian and
an SPCA volunteer worker...
I love animals,' she said.
Biker Geoff Willmers and his
wife Julie braved the weather
and 'came by car'“When
we left East London it was
pouring with rain so we decided
to come by car,' Geoff
explained.
'We wanted to support the
King SPCA and decided rather
than miss we would use
four wheels to make the
breakfast.'
The event also marked the
birthday of Rotary Ann Jenny
Heathcote.
