PART 6 APPENDICES Member Professor Ingrid Scheffer AO Professor Scheffer is a paediatric neurologist and laureate professor at the University of Melbourne, honorary senior principal research fellow at the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health and NHMRC Practitioner Fellow. Professor Scheffer’s clinical research has helped to transform the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy with a focus on genetics, classification and translation to improve patient care through precision medicine approaches. Her research interests also encompass autism spectrum disorders and speech and language disorders. She is leading the International League Against Epilepsy’s new classification of the epilepsies. She is a founding fellow and Vice-President of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences and is also a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science. Member Professor Elizabeth Sullivan Professor Sullivan is Assistant Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) and Professor of Public Health at the University of Technology Sydney. She is a public health physician, medical epidemiologist and health services researcher with a strong commitment to social justice and advancing gender equality in academia. She is academic lead and hair of the Self-Assessment Team for Athena SWAN at the University of Technology Sydney. Professor Sullivan has a particular interest in rare and severe conditions in pregnancy, justice health and Indigenous health. She is a population health and health systems researcher who is focused on reducing health inequalities of vulnerable reproductive populations and improving maternal and infant outcomes. She has made substantial contributions to the field of perinatal health. Previous positions include Professor of Perinatal and Reproductive Health and Director, Australian Institute of Health and Welfare National Perinatal Epidemiology and Statistics Unit, University of New South Wales, and Head of Research, Family Planning NSW. 168 Annual Report of the National Health and Medical Research Council 2015–2016
APPENDIX 3: RESEARCH COMMITTEE The functions of the Research Committee, as set out in section 35(2) of the NHMRC Act, are: • to advise and make recommendations to the Council on the application of the Medical Research Endowment Account (MREA) • to monitor the use of assistance provided from the MREA • to advise the Council on matters relating to medical research and public health research, including the quality and scope of such research in Australia • such other functions as the Minister from time to time determines in writing after consulting the CEO • any other functions conferred on the Committee by the NHMRC Act, the regulations or any other law.
