Tech Session at Boardwalk Porsche by Michael Wingfield On Saturday morning, September 13, about 30 Maverick Region members descended on Boardwalk Porsche for the Boardwalk Tech Session. Besides being greeted by the friendly staff at Boardwalk Porsche, Maverick members found an ample supply of donuts, kolaches, orange juice, hot cocoa, and coffee to help wake up to the business of learning about cars. The format of this event was slightly different than some tech sessions. This event was operated under a walk, look, and ask (Q&A) format rather than a formal presentation of a topic. To help spawn questions, Boardwalk Porsche had several cars on display in the service area, along with some automotive-related product and service vendors. Up on the lifts within the service area, sat a Silver Cayenne S, a black GT3, and a black 996 without an engine. The Cayenne served as the subject vehicle for John Gladwill’s Q&A on the new all-wheel drive ...sent the airbag and mounting bracket soaring... suspension of the Cayenne. The GT3 served as the subject for Q&A for the composite brake components on this car. A new caliper, composite rotor and brake pads were displayed beside the GT3. Having replaced several rotors on my 951, I was amazed at the light weight of the composite rotor and the six-piston caliper. Finally, for anyone who wondered what a 996 would look like without an engine, one simply had to look up under the rear of the car. Also on display in the service area was a black Cayenne Turbo and a silver GT2. Not only did Boardwalk host show-and-tell on the cars in the service bay, but also they had several product vendors and representatives to answer questions about their individual wares. Pirelli Tires, Mobil-1 Oil, and Xtreme Paintless Dent Repair (PDR) each had product and service information, as well as lots of free goodies available to give to the inquisitive individual. The gentlemen from Xtreme PDR held a drawing for a free PDR repair as a demonstration of their service. If you ever had a dent on your Porsche, now was the time to show it off as the technicians reviewed each dent in each car presented for service and drew an owner’s name from the hat. Dennis Chamberlain was the lucky winner of the free demonstration PDR and pulled his maroon Boxster into the service bay for all to see. Within a few short minutes, the guys from Xtreme PDR had removed the left air intake (with some assistance from John Gladwill, Porsche Master Technician), and smoothed out the dent in the left rear fender of Dennis’ Boxster as good as new. The Xtreme PDR guys are at Boardwalk Porsche every Wednesday, so if General Manager, Bobby Rodriguez you have a PDR need, call a service advisor and schedule an appointment. Cliff Blackshear, the Shop Foreman, then lead everyone outside for a demonstration of an airbag deployment. Cliff gave us some background on how airbags work, and then asked us to stand clear of the bag. John Gladwill next set off the airbag, which came from the passenger side of a 996. The sound of the explosion was deafening! Likewise, the force of the charge sent the airbag and mounting bracket soaring over ten feet straight up in the air, where it then floated down to the ground like a hot air balloon. Boardwalk Porsche President Bobby Rodriguez encouraged further discussion by relating a personal story of having been on a car when the airbags deployed. I found it remarkable that those relating the stories said they never heard the explosion of the airbag as the din of metal crashing and glass breaking drowned out sound of the airbag charge. After hearing several such stories, I count myself blessed to have never experienced such a situation. Finally, it was time to distribute the many door prizes provided by Boardwalk Porsche, Mobil-1, and Pirelli. Among the door prizes of shirts, caps, jackets, and Frisbees, were some very elegant gifts including a miniature model car collection set, a talking Boxster (which speaks in three languages), Pirelli calendars, and designer racing watches. Thanks again to Boardwalk Porsche (Bobby Rodriguez, Larry Irby, John Gladwill, Rick Jordan, Cliff Backshear, Hans Hoffmann, Carol Pierce, and Tracy Rathburn), and others that took time away from their Saturday to play host to some inquisitive Mavericks.
