Boxstoberfest <strong>2006</strong> by R. Michael Shassere The 9th annual BoxstoberFest was once again held in central Texas town of Fredericksburg. Fredericksburg is a unique town - borne of German ancestry, and is a perfect setting for this event. BoxstoberFest is the largest gathering of Porsche Boxsters in the Southwest, and is the only major Porsche event that is complety free - participants only pay for their own meals and lodging. This is due to the tremendous effort of the event coordinators from Hill Country, Lone Star, Maverick and Longhorn regions: Bob Bianconi, Steve Boyd, Ted Pietrzak, Lee Smith, Jim Basey, Geoff Roberts, Michael Shassere & Matt (the Car Nut) Marcelissen. Over 90 enthusiasts, arriving in over 50 Porsche Boxsters (and a few, 911, 944, and 968s) descended on Fredericksburg for Boxstoberfest. Attendees came from not only Texas, but Oklahoma, Missouri, Louisiana, Colorado and several other states. On Friday evening, the attendees gathered at The Auslander Restaurant for registration, to receive their welcome packets with information for the weekend events, to reacquaint with old friends and meet new ones. Saturday morning the attendees gathered for the second straight year at the Gillespie County Airport, and lined up to display their vehicles on the tarmac in front of the Hangar Hotel and Diner. This is truly a first class facility, and there is no better venue to display these fine automobiles. Hotel guests and area residents came out in large numbers to see the cars and talk to the owners. Mid morning, the drivers departed in 3 separate groups to tour the beautiful Texas Hill Country and enjoy the winding roads so well suited for the drivers to experience the perfection of these vehicles. The driving groups were led by Michael Shassere, Geoff Roberts and Jim Basey. All three groups met up in Leakey TX for lunch at The Frio Pecan Farm and enjoyed one of the best BBQ meals everyone said they had ever had. After lunch the 3 groups again departed for more driving in the Hill Country. The groups even made a quick stop by a 2/3 replica of the famous Stonehenge monument - another Texas uniguity. Late afternoon all 3 groups returned to the airport to enjoy refreshments at the Officers Club – an excellent lounge located in the Hangar Hotel - to wind down from the days events and share with others the adventures of the day. Michael Shassere winding, twisting roads with substantial elevation changes punctuated by long open stretches and sweeping turns. Some post drive comments were: "I had no idea there were roads like this in TX, I'm coming back next year", "Wow, you sure drive fast in Texas (someone from the slow group)", "Could barely keep up in the twisties with my wife in her Boxster", "Awesome!!!". The group left the officers club to freshened up, then gathered at Torre di Pietra Winery and enjoyed a wonderful meal under the huge open air pavilion. Due to our wonderful sponsors, each attendee was able to receive 2 door prizes in the drawings. One lucky attendee walked away with a Porsche Boxster child's pedal car, provided by Autobahn Porsche, and another received a gift certificate for 2 free nights to Das Gelbe Haus – a Fredericksburg Bed & Breakfast owned by one of the event organizers. In addition to Autobahn and Das Gelbe Haus, other sponsors were : Zims Autotechnik, Langka, Longhorn Region, Mid-America Motor Works, Pelican Parts, Beasley Porsche, jewels for Cars, Griot's Garage, Texas Driver Magazine, Bumper Plugs, Ruf Autocentre, Imagine Auto, Car Care Online, Porsche Pete's Boxster Board, RadarRack and Suncoast Porsche.
