PCA Palooza 2010
By Chris Christensen
This was the sixth year for PCA
Palooza. It is a gathering of Porsche
enthusiasts sponsored by PCA that
includes: an arrival mixer, spirited and
scenic drives, a Concours, a Saturday night
dinner, and an Autocross on Sunday. It is
over a weekend that gives those that work
a chance to partake in the activities and the
splendor of Eureka Springs. It is truly a beautiful area of the
country, the fall colors were waning but enough left to even
surprise a New Englander.
We left at 8:00 AM sharp on Friday morning
from the Sanger area where we met three other
cars to join in a Caravan. The drive was a bit
wet along I-40 as we hit numerous rain showers
along the way. But as we got closer to Eureka
Springs the weather started to clear a bit. The
drive was very scenic if not spectacular in
spots…passing through the Boston Mountains
was a highlight. Beautiful countryside and
autumn colors in the trees made the drive very
worthwhile. We logged over 400 miles from
Southlake to Sanger and on to Eureka Springs.
Checking in to the hotel and then into the PCA Palooza event
was painless. The folks running Palooza have it figured out…
we felt very welcome. Everyone was smiling…guess it had
to do with the fact in part that they had just gotten out of their
Porsches. I am learning that driving Porsches or just looking at
them can make everyone really happy.
We counted about 13 Mavericks in attendance. Not a bad
crowd considering the distance to get there. There were probably
about 200 Porsches in attendance. I might add that there were
some spectacular cars that
made the trip –including a
handful of beautiful 356’s
and one bright yellow
Carrera GT and everything
in between.
Friday evening we were
treated to a buffet mixer
hosted by the Palooza folks.
The food was plentiful with
more than enough to feed a small army. There were a few
purchases that could be made, such as tee shirts, golf shirts, and
other Porsche accessories. We did make a small purchase and
then restrained ourselves.
After a good night’s rest, we had breakfast in town at a very
quaint restaurant. For those of you who have never been to
Photos by Chris Christensen
Eureka Springs it is a very scenic town and of course a bit
touristy. The streets are very narrow and in spots quite hilly. It
makes for some interesting driving, especially when meeting an
oversize vehicle head-on.
Our group had signed up for the scenic tour on Saturday
morning. It was not a long tour but again very scenic and
interesting. From a one-way wood
covered bridge to an almost all glass nondenominational
church located in a very
remote section – in a heavily wooded
area. You can see from the photograph,
it really was a beautiful location and the
church was very cleverly constructed.
We heard the folks that took the spirited
tour really enjoyed themselves, if you
know what we mean.
Late morning we went on our own little tour of
the town. Visiting some old hotels and the like,
returning to wash the grime off of our cars for
the Public Choice Concours. Hot water in an ice
bucket and a towel…works wonders but not quite
the best. It was a bit chilly – in the high 30’s in
the morning. We lined our cars up in the People’s
Choice Concours. So after about three hours the Concours was
complete – with hopes of winning at least something.
We retired to our rooms to get ready for dinner and the
Concours awards…we didn’t win. Matter of fact no Maverick
won. Jack Griffin had a spectacular ’85 Carrera in the show
along with Frank Briggs and Doug Koeppen with their 993’s
and Mike with his very nice and clean 928. We were all a little
disappointed but not shocked. In addition this writer discovered
that even a 2010 C2 Cab is not good enough to bring home the
bacon. Such is the life in a Concours…there were great cars to
compete against, so we shouldn’t grumble too much and just
be happy we were there to enjoy it all. Dinner and drinks and a
keynote presentation from Vic Elford – Born in London, Elford
was one of the fastest drivers in the sixties and seventies….he
was well known in the Porsche circuits at the time and known
as quick Vic. His stories were entertaining and informative.
Sunday brought out the Autocross…with James and Wendy
Shofit assisting. It was a relatively short course, cars had
difficulty reducing speed…probably 20 mph could be reached at
maximum. We watched for a while but had plans to return home
through Hot Springs, so we did not stay for the conclusion…
All in all it was a fun trip with good friends and a beautiful
setting. We are looking forward to next year and highly
recommend a trip through the Ozark twisty roads to Eureka
Springs…your Porsche will love it.
