Maverick Minutes Madhu Rao, Secretary Our August 2011 board meeting started at 7pm with a review of the recent Porsche Parade event in Savannah, GA. John Hamilton reviewed the successes of the region which include several first place awards for driving events as well as, (cue the trumpets, please), a first place finish for Slipstream! As the results were announced, we began to drum the refrain “We will rock you… We are the champions.” Have you ever had that kind of fun at a board meeting? Well then, why not join us at a future board meeting? John opened the meeting with a simple comment, to let the Maverick Region know that “we hear them.” To this point, the recent Maverick Region survey highlighted the need to optimize our communications with you. To achieve this, John will be sending out a monthly summary of events via email. As a follow up to the July meeting John asked everyone to forecast their anticipated expenses and utilize a ‘revenue favorable’ budget mindset going forward. At the meeting committee chairs discussed how they could achieve this objective in their report outs. Madhu Rao, (yours truly) reviewed the recent Maverick Region survey. The results and number of responses were extremely encouraging. Thank you for your feedback. This will help all of us plan more expediently for the future. Additional survey information is contained in an article in this edition of Slipstream. After presenting the survey data, Madhu reviewed the timeline associated with the Maverick Region 2012 election. Maverick Region members interested in an executive council office may contact Brendan Eagan, John Harvey or Carey Spreen at nomination@mavpca.org. Brendan noted that the Vice-President position for 2012 is currently open. The next issue of Slipstream will contain the ballot of candidates and instructions for voting. Results will be announced at Founders Day on November 12, 2011. Fresh from his victory lap, Richard Bradley was smiling from ear to ear. He mentioned that it has been helpful to have an intern, Amanda, assist with the copy and layout of Slipstream. He also reminded each committee chair to submit their articles and photos to him before the 17th of the month. If you are reading this next month, you’ll know I was compliant! Jim Falgout noted that our fiscal position continues to improve. He reviewed our cash position and discussed our future expenses and revenue from upcoming events. The team of Carey Spreen, Brendan Eagan, and John Harvey described their plans for upcoming Sunday Tours and Rallies. It appears that members of the region really enjoy these events as evidenced by your recent survey feedback. Carey described a Bring Your Own Porsche (BYOP) Rally event scheduled to be held on October 23 in conjunction with the Sunday Drive to San Martino Vineyards. Oops, did I just disclose the final destination of this Rally event? Judging from the success of the May Sunday Drive mark your calendars to join your fellow Mavericks on this date. You can always watch the Cowboys game later… Brendan and John reviewed the historical success of Sunday Drives and shared some concept ideas to incorporate these events with other Maverick Region events. Brendan noted that tour maps for Garmin GPS units are available on the Maverick website. If you have a question or a different brand GPS unit (e.g., Magellan, Tom Tom) please contact tours@mavpca.org for additional information. John reviewed the upcoming Boxstoberfest event in Fredericksburg, TX, September 9-11, 2011. The event is open to all Porsches. John also described the next Sunday drive on September 25 which includes a brief visit to Motorsport Ranch. Details are here > http://mav.pca.org/Events/Calendar.asp. Bring your Porsche, your driving partner, and your Maverick Region badge and introduce yourself to everyone. Pat Friend noted that advertising placements are healthy and discussed some advertising ideas for our 50th anniversary celebration. Stay tuned for details. James Shoffit also reviewed the recent Parade event in Savannah, GA, and next year’s event in Salt Lake City, July 8 –14, 2012. (Note to self – post the event on the refrigerator at home). James also reviewed our current Facebook page and opportunities to update/integrate this into our regional communications plan. Based on feedback from the survey we know this is important for several Maverick Region members. Wendy Shoffit updated us about how other regions are communicating with their membership (e.g., websites, newsletters, etc.). She noted that an opportunity may exist to create videos of our various events (e.g., Autocross, Drivers’ Education, etc.) to provide an overview of these for region members. She also reminded us that Maverick Regional directories are available for $5 at www.clubregistration.net. John Hamilton presented a report on behalf of Christy Payne and the Social Committee. The 2011 Founders’ Day event will be held on Saturday, November 12, at the Hilton Hotel in Southlake, TX. Please join us at this fun event! John also described the upcoming Holiday Party and All Member’s Party. Additional information will be posted on the Maverick Region website about these two events. Lisa Steele announced that in July we gained 27 new and 8
August 10 , 2011 transferred members, thus growing our total membership to 1984 total members (1188 primary & 796 affiliate). The process outlined by the membership committee to contact new and existing members is resulting higher new and renewal memberships. Lisa is also seeking your photos from recent or past Maverick Region events. Find your four best photos and send them to Lisa at membership@mavpca.org. Linda Bambina described the process to develop an anniversary logo for the 50th Maverick Region celebration. She also presented an idea to create awareness for the Hope Shelter at various Maverick Region events. For additional information about how you can help the Hope Shelter, please contact Chris Hamilton at cheerin104@hotmail.com. Mike Brodigan described the upcoming Drivers’ Education events September 24-25. Early registration is strong with 50 registrations. Mike described the value of Maverick Region events as they offer a significant amount of instructor time. Building on this theme Mike described a concept idea of ‘Texas 2-Step’ event. This could include a mini Drivers’ Education event in conjunction with a Driving Tour or AX/TT event. I have seen Mike and his wife Judy dance the polka so when he starts talking about “two-stepping” get ready for something special! Fresh from their victory laps at Parade, Travis and Robyn Howard described the AX/TT events on September 10-11. Travis discussed the value of Maverick Region driving events as these include up to 10 runs per session. That is great value for the total cost! Travis discussed the opportunity to return to Pennington Field in Bedford for AX/TT events in 2012. Robyn mentioned our upcoming Club Race on October 29- 30. Robyn, Travis, and Mike stressed the need for safety at all driving events including recruiting and fairly compensating the corner workers at such events. Our guests attending this meeting were Bob Lewis, Mike Picolla and Jason Trent. Bob Lewis has been a longstanding contributor to the success of this region in various roles. Mike provided some very relevant insights about Maverick Region events from a member perspective. Jason drives a 2007 Cayman and attended the June Happy Hour at Ruggeri’s. He enjoyed the event and described his interest to help out the Maverick Region. If you have an interest to help out the region please let any Board member know your interests and we’ll take it from there. Meeting adjourned at 8:35 pm. September 9
