Cliff’s Ramblings: One of Those Days
By Cliff Blackshear
Around the
second
week of
May I arrived at
work and found
myself trying to
organize which
problem we had in
the shop to worry about the most.
The answer was “All of them.”
Jason had a 2012 Cayenne with a
major oil leak. He was struggling to
find the origin of the leak. Oil was
showing up at the back of the engine
where the cylinder head and
engine block mate together, running
along the seam and down the
back of the block. With everything
assembled there was no way to determine
where it was coming from.
Head to block area - maybe head
gasket? Cylinder head cover leaking
and oil actually running down the
back side of the head? Many other
possibilities needed to be examined.
As there was no way to get a
visual on the back side of the head,
Jason looked and looked with our
bore scope. He had cleaned the
area thoroughly and sprayed with
trace powder, and ran the engine
hoping to see origin of leak. No joy.
We talked and multiple others had
come over and tried to help. There
was simply no way to know for sure.
So disassembling with trace powder
on there and hoping to see something
was our next best next move.
Intake comes off. Man, the
vario-ram intake on a 2012
6-cylinder Cayenne is a bear to
remove. Turns out it was the
mechanical vacuum pump leaking
where it is mated to the head
and driven off the camshaft. Even
then, Jason was paranoid that
might not truly be it. He resealed,
reassembled with fresh trace
powder and test drove. Looked
and looked afterwards plus used
bore scope to peek everywhere
possible afterwards. It appeared
to have resolved the problem.
Right next to Jason was Brian
with a Panamera that was towed
in. The engine had “made a noise”
while driving and died; this was the
only information he had to work
with. Pushed the car in and he
started diagnosis. About an hour
into diagnosis he determined that
the camshafts on bank one were
It’s never too
late for a
second opinion
