May Happy Hour: Love & War in Texas By Mike Farrar Photos by Linda Bambina The May happy hour was at Love & War in Texas near Grapevine Mills Mall. We had over 35 members present, including one member that and tasted great. We had the fried pickles and the wild boar quesadillas. Both were excellent. Linda Bambina made a cameo appearance to Alan Lusk and Rich Keesecker came all the way from New Hampshire. Actually he was in Dallas visiting his daughter who happens to be a Maverick and flies airplanes when she is not driving her Porsche. continued from page 22 out of time. Plus he had noted a huge loss of cylinder pressure on #3 chamber, 90% leakage. Cylinders 1, 2, and 4 had all passed a pressure loss test. He removed the cylinder head cover and found all 4 bolt heads for the vario cam adjuster lying in the bottom of the head, sheared off. Next, the cylinder head was off to examine the chain drive for stretching, as well as to look at damage to chain rails, drive and driven gears. A piston-to-valve collision was apparent, and we needed to see the piston crown condition. I wanted to see all the valves from the head. I have seen bent valves pass a pressure loss test before and suspected more than just cylinder 3 was damaged. Chad had another 2012 Cayenne with a weird issue. The auto start/ stop system was inoperative. Auto start/stop is a system that shuts the engine off while sitting stopped at red lights, etc. When you release the brake it restarts, and by the time your foot hits the accelerator pedal the engine responds normally. The system was not working. In the instrument cluster a light came on showing the system was disabled at every stop. A small green symbol with an “A” in the middle and a slash through it was illuminated. This is not unusual but typically only happens when the engine is not warmed up, or there is too much electrical demand for shut off. A huge number of parameters have to be met for the system to operate correctly. Chad and I had sat the night before after 6 pm looking at a vehicle analysis log, looking for what might have kept the system from working. The log held nearly 300 pages of data. We knew we needed to concentrate on DME, Gateway, and AC Controls to find the answer. I brought the log up again and spent quite a bit of time looking at it. Had the car on a charger and it indicated battery was 100%. Charging system was working with no issues. Test drove and looked at actual values, input values and found nothing out of place. Filed a request for technical assistance from Porsche. Back to Brian’s Panamera cylinder head. I removed all of the intake valves and found #4 valves bent like pretzels. That cylinder had passed a cylinder pressure loss test; proof of what I suspected. All the valve guides and valve seats were fine.
