Fifty Years of Porsches: Family Portrait at Texas Motor Speedway
By Steve and Jonathan Perrin
Photos by Mark Steele
Editor’s Note: Long time Maverick
Steve Perrin and his son Jon
participated in this historic photo
shoot, which featured a Porsche representing
every year that Maverick
Region has been in existence. Here
are thoughts from both of them.
From Steve:
Imagine if you
will, our Linda
Bambina all
excitable and nervous.
Now, for the
few days immediately
leading up to
and including Saturday
April 28, double that level of
anxiety. As I understand it, as early
as last October, Linda had arranged
commitments for a representative
car for each of the 50 years that
Maverick Region has been around
Richard Bradley and Ken Vaughan
set up the time-lapse video camera
Christy Payne: “Come on, come on,
come on, RIGHT THERE!”
for a special anniversary photo
shoot. As of three weeks before
the event, 23 of those cars had
dropped out for various reasons.
Months ago, Linda had called and
asked if I could get my ‘72 911 up
and running for the event, but unfortunately
I had to decline as it was
too much to do in too little time
(shamefully, it has been dormant
for over 10 years). Just days before
the event I received another Lindacall
with a proposition: Ed Mayo’s
1972 911 was
available but it
needed a driver,
as he was
already driver/
resource
stretched after
already providing
three other
cars. Would
I be willing
to drive Ed’s
“Elvira”? YES,
YES, YES!
So Saturday
morning
Jonathan and
I were on our way to the track in a
shiny, “better-than-new” 1972 911.
I had told Jon that we were going
to park the fifty-plus cars and then
Charlie was going to take their
picture with his motorized camera
setup. I thought to myself that it
would take a couple of hours. Jon
was figuring 30-35 minutes. We
were home … after eight hours!
From Jon:
The ride
over was
something
to remember; the
last time I was
in a Porsche was
well over a decade
ago. Shortly after arrival, Dad and
I were met by many friends of old,
as well as the readily welcomed air
conditioning. Linda called out for
a strapping young man to help her
arrange water bottles into tables,
after the facility didn’t follow
through with providing furniture in
the clubhouse, and I just happened
to be there. After that, we were
all treated to a lunch of hotdogs,
something that of course I would
take any day of the week, and after
a while I caught on to the theme
of German cars, food, and drinks.
Three 356s waiting patiently for their
final parking assignments
