Our Uniformed Groups, comprising both the National Cadet
Corp (Sea) and the National Civil Defence Cadet Corp, achieved
the Bronze award for the Best Unit Competition and the Unit
Overall Proficiency Award respectively.
All these achievements – in both academic and character
development domains were made possible because we have
a strong team of caring, competent and empowered staff to
teach, guide and motivate our JYians to scale greater heights.
This brings us to our Strategic Thrust 3 – Developing caring,
competent and empowered staff to achieve Staff Excellence.
The teachers and staff members embrace the school’s HEARTS
ethos, striving towards the culture of care and learning with our
students and for our students.
Our teachers engage in weekly professional discussions in
professional learning teams to explore how they can address
the identified learning needs of students and collaborate to
create teaching resource packages.
In addition since the beginning of this year, supported by
the English Language Institute of Singapore (ELIS), we have
also adopted a whole school approach to promote effective
communication in English in the respective subjects. I am sure
you are aware that recently there have been discussions in the
news forums about how teachers should mark students’ work
and whether students should be penalized if they do not use
the correct terms in their answers. This is a timely reminder of
the importance of effective communication skills.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our teachers and
EAS who have always been very positive and committed and
always striving to do their best for our students – be it taking
care of their learning needs or their social-emotional and
financial needs. This evening, we will also be giving out the
MOE Long Service Awards to staff with more than 10 years of
long service. Thank you, staff of Juying Secondary!
As a school, we are well aware that we are part of a larger
community and that we could leverage one another to achieve
the best possible outcomes for our students.
Hence, we have Strategic Thrust 4 – Achieving Partnership
Excellence which drives our partnership efforts to build
supportive partnerships with our stakeholders and external
organisations.
Our School Advisory Committee, led by Dr Ong, has always
been very supportive of our school initiatives. The SAC shares
the same beliefs as the school that students are the focus in all
our decision-making and often explores ways with the school
on how we can better reach out to our students, especially
those from low -income families. The members indeed have
been very responsive to our requests for assistance – be it their
presence at an important event or giving financial support.
At this juncture, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr
Ong and Mr Andy Koh from the SAC for generously sponsoring
tonight’s dinner. Thank you, Dr Ong & Mr Koh!
on their programmes and resources to run our character
development programmes.
This year for example, we held our Annual Fitness Run at the
Singapore Discovery Centre and at the same time, we also
leverage on the NE exhibits and resources at the SDC to
promote citizenship values in our students.
We also have a close partnership with Tzu Chi, Lions Club,
Nanyang Citizens’ Consultative Committee and Nanyang Police
Division which provide the platforms for our students to do local
Values-In–Action projects – for example, the painting of the
flats of needy families in Nanyang division, and the recycling
programme with Tzu Chi. Lions Club has been generous in
providing sponsorship for our needy students for the past
years. Last year, Lions Club presented the school a donation of
$15,000 to support our needy students.
My sincere and heartfelt appreciation to all our partners who
have been supportive of our school and have played an active
role in the character development of our students.
We started our inaugural Partners Awards last year as a gesture
of our appreciation for the collaboration and support of our
partners. This year, we will be giving out the awards to members
of our Juying Parents Support Group – Mr Thomas Loh, Mr
Dickson Kang, Mrs Wendy Neo and Mdm Karen Chng as well
as 2 of our working partners, the Singapore Discovery Centre
and Nanyang Citizens’ Consultative Committee.
Our heartfelt gratitude to our partners and parents!
To conclude, I would like to congratulate the students and their
parents, who will later be receiving prizes for their academic
achievement.
To the students, well done! As the saying goes, you reap what
you sow - your efforts in pursuing academic excellence have
indeed paid off! Be appreciative of the people who have been
supporting you – your parents and your teachers. For the
students who have graduated, I hope you will continue to do us
proud and be good and useful citizens of Singapore, anchored
by the school’s R3IGHT values and contribute meaningfully to
the society.
To the parents present this evening, thank you for your support
for the school all this while and the trust you have placed in the
school and the teachers! Thank you for working with us to do
what is best for your child’s growth and development.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the following
persons too:
Mr Alvin Yeo, our GOH for gracing this occasion – your
presence this evening has definitely made today’s celebration a
memorable one for all of us.
Mr Richard Dawson, our cluster superintendent – your trust and
support for Juying Secondary all these years and your presence
this evening are very much appreciated by all of us here at
Juying.
This evening, I am also very pleased to announce that Mr Andy
Koh will be our next SAC Chairman. Mr Koh is an active member
of the Jurong Lions Club and it is through his connection that
our school has established a mutually beneficial partnership
over the years. Congratulations, Mr Andy Koh and thank you
for agreeing to assume the post of SAC Chairman!
Our Juying Parents Support Group continues to be our active
and important partner. The JPSG EXCO was formed in 2013,
headed by Mr Thomas Loh as the Chairman and Mrs Candy
Teo as the Vice-Chairman. Both have recently relinquished
their posts but will continue to serve as advisors to the new
JPSG EXCO. I would like to thank Mr Loh and Mrs Teo for their
commitment and their leadership. And I would now like to
take the opportunity to introduce and welcome the new JPSG
chairman, Mrs June Lee, and the Vice-Chairman, Ms Christine
Sim. Welcome, Mrs Lee & Ms Sim.
The organizing committee for today’s celebration – your
positive attitude, hard work and patience especially with all the
last minute changes are indeed commendable!
Last but not least, our special guests – our pioneering staff and
senior staff of Juying. Thank you once again for spending the
evening here with us. We hope you will have the opportunity to
meet up with your old friends and reminisce about the good old
times you had in Juying Secondary.
Finally, to all the guests, staff and ex-staff, students and exstudents,
thank you for being here this evening. We hope you
will enjoy the dinner and the programmes we have lined up for
you.
Together, we will succeed. Thank you.
