Mother Tongue
Normal(Technical) Programme
Long term goals
1) To equip students with Mother Tongue proficiency in four main
aspects: listening, speaking, reading and writing
2) To develop students’ spoken and written competency in Mother
Tongue languages
3) To further develop students’ appreciation toward their Mother
Tongue languages and culture
Our main programmes are:
MT Intensive Programme (Graduating classes)
Through this programme, our students are more confident and
motivated to do well in their national examinations. They are
equipped with specific examination skills to prepare them for
the GCE ‘O’ and ‘N’ level examinations.
MT Focus Group
Here the structured supplementary/remedial lessons are for
students from all levels, helping them bridge their learning gaps.
MT Newspaper Reading Programme
Our MT Newspaper Reading Programme helps in developing
students’ general knowledge and instilling good reading habits.
By subscribing to the Lian He Zao Bao for CL and Berita Harian
for ML, students connect with daily events and discover the
practical use of their MT.
Through a structured approach, our MT teachers are not
only cultivating good reading habits, but also expanding our
students’ proficiency in their learning of the MT language.
MT Fortnight Programme
Teaching MTL beyond the classroom by creating an environment
that encourages students to use MTL and appreciate the heritage
and culture through MT Fortnight Programme activities.
This year, our department conducted a one-day study camp for
all our Sec 4 & 5 students. Through this day camp, students are
taught to organize their time well and they learned how to stay
focused on their studies despite the many distractions they are
facing.
MT Fortnight activities for the lower secondary students
were carried on the 21st & 22nd May 2015. The students are
introduced to various communication skills via stimulating
and exciting activities such as Amazing Race, Creative Writing
Workshop, etc.
Achievements:
- MT Dept has achieved excellent results for the GCE ‘O’ Level
Mid-Year Examination. Both CL & ML units have attained 100%
passes with 66.7% distinctions for CL and 16.7% distinctions for
ML. We are very proud of our students’ achievements and our
MT teachers will continue to inspire and support our students
towards achieving academic excellence.
- Sec 3 students participated in the annual MT Language &
Cultural Fiesta organized by Boon Lay Secondary School.
This year, our students Huang Rui Jia clinched the 1st prize &
Iyzzal Fahmi won the 3rd prize in the CL & ML Essay Writing
Competition respectively. In addition, JYSS also won the 1st
prize and Consolation prize in the Language & Cultural Quiz
segment.
- Huang Rui Jia of Sec 3E1 also won the Top Prize - the First in
Standard Award in the 13th National Secondary School Chinese
Essay Writing Competition – Xin Lei Jiang organised by the
Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan.

MISSION
To achieve better-quality grades and preserve values,
cultures & traditions, as well as acquire proficiency in the
Mother Tongue languages (MTL) for communication and
interaction in daily life
Secondary 1 programme
The students learned and developed skills on presentation,
photo-editing, use of paint software and perle beads that
infuse mathematical components.
Secondary 2 programme
The students learned and developed skills in mindmapping,
story boarding and videography. They also
embarked on an elective module on hospitality and
tourism.
Secondary 3 and 4 programme
The Sec 3 students experienced life in an ITE campus
for a week, where they learnt skills on Laser Show and
Fun with Fitness. The Sec 4 students experienced an
elective module on hospitality and tourism as well l as F1
modelling.
