This includes CODE@SG, which will introduce coding and computational
thinking in pre-tertiary education, Industry Preparation for Pre-graduate Programme
(iPREP) to equip tertiary students with experience and skillsets for
work in the industry, and SkillsFuture Study Awards for the ICT sector to encourage
continuous skills acquisition among ICT professionals and to develop
tech specialists. By formalising such programmes, more students will
gain the knowledge required in a society interwoven with smart technologies.
They will be better prepared for an environment that may be vastly different
from today’s.
Additionally, a new initiative called Internet of Things @ Schools will use sensors
and data to enhance the current learning system, connecting various
sensors and uploading the data onto a shared platform. This data is then
available for students to access, analyse and suggest solutions for real-world
issues. This initiative is currently at the Proof of Concept stage for the subjects
Science and Geography, and is allowing students to transition smoothly
to a new learning paradigm that may well be the primary approach in the future.
Also in the field of ICT, the IDA has introduced the National Infocomm Scholarship
(NIS) to develop talent and nurture future leaders to help drive Singapore’s
infocomm industry. This programme allows scholars to benefit from
both the prestige of a government scholarship and valuable exposure to private
sector work through opportunities for internships with the industry.
Scholars also have the freedom to chart their tech career according to their
aspirations.
Here in Singapore, the German Institute of Science and Technology (TUM
Asia) and Fraunhofer IDM@NTU have already made adjustments to their curriculum,
engaging their students with smart technologies.
