Lincoln’s particular path of vengeance
is a methodical one, too.
Obviously, you can’t just plug one
between the killer’s eyes and be
done with it. To bust up a particular
racket, Lincoln must complete
activities in that area until he has
caused enough ‘damage’ to lure
the lieutenant out. Once that’s
done, he can either kill or recruit
that lieutenant to his side. Do that
to all the rackets in the area and
Lincoln’s true target will come out,
allowing him to be dealt with. The
way that most things can cause
damage – stealing money from
areas, killing guys, destroying contraband,
or just plain ol’ completing
the objectives – allows for a much
more free-form experience. If you
don’t want to do certain activities,
that’s just fine! There’s more than
enough stuff to damage that you
can mostly avoid the parts that
bore you.
Taking over these rackets allows
you to assign them to your own
people. The associates you gather
end up being some of the strongest
characters in the game: do extra
tasks for them and increase both
their earnings and their loyalty. It’s
a nice little detail which keeps you
returning to earlier areas, stopping
that feeling of finishing an area and
never visiting it again, or feeling
as if your closest confidantes are
people you’ve known for maybe
five minutes total.
