PRESENTATION
EVENING
This year, we were most
fortunate to have Martyn Rooney
as our Sports Presentation
Evening Guest of Honour.
In the year of the
Rio Olympics, it was
even more significant
to have Martyn, who
is the Captain of the
Great Britian Athletics
team, present our
awards. It was a
privilege to hear
stories from Martyn
about his experiences
through athletics, and
what you have to do
to achieve success in professional sport. This was
enjoyed by all the students, parents and guests. We
hope to welcome Martyn back again soon, to open
our new athletics track.
ACHIEVEMENTS
RUGBY
Both the 1 st XV and U13s were losing finalists in the respective
County Cup Finals. Representative honours have been
achieved by John Sommerville and Luke Gyesi-Appiah who
have been selected for the Leicestershire U18 County Squad,
while Rory Stoker (U15), Joseph Collier and William Westwood
(U14) have all been selected for next year’s Leicester Tigers
Rugby Development Player Programme.
NETBALL
Adelaide Muskwe (Year 13) was invited to train with the
England U19 squad, while Isobel Hose (Year 10) had trials
with the England U17 squad. Olivia Gilchrist (Year 12)
continues to be part of the East Midlands Regional squad. In
addition, Elise Atkinson (Year 7) and Ellie Gallacher (Year 8)
currently train with their County Academy Squads.
CROSS COUNTRY
Congratulations to Alice
Daniel (Year 13), Alfie
Thompson (Year 12) and
Mia Atkinson (Year 9) who
all raced superbly this
year in the Cross Country
Championships; all three
won Bronze medals in their
individual events. Alfie
helped the Senior Boys’ team
win Bronze alongside Luke
Pole, Nick Heywood, Archie
Hailes and Finbarr Lloyd (Year
12), while Alice also helped
the Senior Girls win Bronze
alongside Lydia Satchell and
Kate Scarborough (Year 12).
Alfie has also represented
England this year, helping
England win the 4.7
kilometre British and Irish
Junior Mountain Running
Championships. He will now
represent England again
in the U18 World Mountain Running Championships. In a
much shorter event (sprinting), Dalila Watson (Year 8) helped
Leicestershire and Rutland win the Regional Sports Hall Athletics
Finals for the first time in their history.
FENCING
Fencing is a rapidly growing sport here at Ratcliffe College,
with Niamh Noble (Year 10) being selected in the England
U15 squad this year – an amazing achievement. Three
other students, Harry Palmer (Year 11), Jonathon Bellamy
and Finley Noble (Year 8), have taken part in a number of
competitions this year, with excellent performances from
Harry, who won Gold in the U14 East Midlands British Youth
Championship Fencing Qualifier, and Finley, who won Silver
in the Elite Epee Series.
CRICKET
Well done to Jack Nightingale
who has been awarded a
contract with Leicestershire
County Cricket Academy.
Jack also played at the
prestigious Bunbury Festival.

HOCKEY
The Boys’ U13 hockey team has had an excellent year,
finishing 3 rd in the National Hockey Finals. Olivia Back (Year
11) has also had another excellent season, representing
the England U18 team. The following students were also
involved in regional/national hockey this year: Elise Atkinson
(Year 7), Owen Lloyd (Year 8), Mia Atkinson (Year 9), Emily
Grimmett, Molly Edwards, Jenna Pole and Olivia Carpenter
(Year 10), Jack Nightingale (Year 10), Harry Antill (Year 12)
and Jack Watson (Year 13).
DANCE
Enormous congratulations to Isobel Knight (Year 12) who
represented the GB team at the Dance World Cup in July,
winning a number of medals including Gold in a number
of individual, group, quartet and trio dances.
COUNTY ATHLETICS
Well done to Mia Atkinson (Year 9) who finished 2 nd in the
1500m, gaining her selection to represent Leicestershire
at the National School Athletics Finals.
SPORT
A large number of Junior, Intermediate and Full
Colours Awards were awarded again this year, and
this is due to all the hard work of the students.
Full Colours, the highest sporting achievement at
Ratcliffe, were awarded to Sibella Chew and Samuel
Nightingale, not only for their sporting successes
over the past year, but also for their roles as Sports
Captains. Sports ties were also awarded to Olivia
Back, Thomas Brambell, Thomas Chandler, Joseph
Higham, Isobel Knight, Jack Nightingale, Niamh
Noble, Benedict Pole, Harry Redding, Toby Smith,
Kate Tyszka and Richard Ward.
CYCLING
Tom Chandler (Year 13) has had another excellent year on
the bike, having represented Scotland in the National Senior
Cycling Championships, winning a Bronze medal.
GOLF
Emily Dunne (Year 10) and Aimee Cleminson (Year 8) have
again represented Leicestershire and Rutland County Junior
Girls’ golf team.
Other notable achievements were:
Dalila Watson (Year 8) is County Champion
in the pole vault and 3 rd in high jump.
Ellie Gallacher (Year 8) finished 3 rd in discus.
Harry Culpin (Year 9) is County Champion in the pole vault.
Emily Grimmett (Year 10) finished 3 rd in the 100m.
William Westwood (Year 10) finished 3 rd in the 300m.
Alfie Thompson (Year 12) finished 2 nd in the 3000m.

GO GOLD AWARDS
