Mathew Scholtz
MotoAmerica/SuperGP
Nationals)
Number: 720/20
Born: 09/09/1992
From: Durban
YZF-R1 (MotoAmerica) ETR Nashua
Yamaha YZF-R1 (SuperGP Nationals)
Mathew Scholtz began riding in
motocross on a Yamaha PW50. He
moved quickly through the classes in
the national motocross series. When
he was thirteen, Mathew switched
to road racing and not to long after
the switch, he was racing in the Red
Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup. He would
race in the series for three years from
2008 and through 2010. He achieved
several podiums and one victory in the
Czech Republic, Brno. Mathew would
go on to race in the Spanish CEV,
German IDM and World SuperSPort
Championship.
2016
Not only did Matthew Scholtz have
one amazing season in the South
African National SuperGP but he has
broken in to the international scene
in some style. Scholtz got his first
ride in MotoAmerica at round 7 of the
2016 season at the Utah Motorsports
Campus. He blew everyone away
with his opening performances. A
second place finish in race 1 followed
up by a third place in race 2, how
about that for a debut! Scholtz didn’t
stop there. The following round at the
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, saw
him take two second place finishes.
Round 9 of MotoAmerica took place
in New Jersey at the Thunderbolt
Raceway. Although it had been a two
month wait since the previous round,
Matthew Scholtz picked up where
he left off, picking up yet another
second place in Race 1. Race 2
however would see, for the first time
in six races, Scholtz off the podium
after being forced to retire due to a
technical issue. I feel that with that
kind of start in MotoAmerica, Scholtz
is definitely one to look out for next
season. Future champion? I think so!
Let us not forget that some of these
riders are juggling both national and
international duties. Scholtz is one
of them that was doing just that. He
was tearing it up back in the South
African SuperGP nationals. Scholtz
hardly stepped foot off the podium
all season and headed in to the final
round twenty-nine points clear and
the chance to grab the title. Schultz
would do just that, his main rival
Clinton Seller crashed out of race
one, ending his weekend and title
challenge. Scholtz cruised to two
victories in the final round and a
maiden SuperGP title.
