BMW G310R
It may be small but this little bike
will carry the propeller badge like a
WSBK superstar. BMW have said it
will be build by TVS but was totally
engineered and designed by BMW in
Germany. It’s clear BMW is keeping
an ongoing eye on the future with this
small new offering, which might turn
out to be the heart of the two-wheeled
business of the future, or should we
use the ‘money making’ term instead.
We also expect spinoff offerings from
this bike, like a full fairing version,
which might bring along a racing
class, a bit like what the RC390 is
to KTM. And a small Adventure bike
might also be on the table.
The concept bike surfaced a
couple of years ago and the message
was clear from the start, a small
package with a great kick. It will be a
small capacity bike yet a real BMW at
that with intent, and the stunt concept
at the time highlighted this. The styling
is typical BMW, yet not really pretty as
such but still manages to keep one’s
eye dancing all over the interesting
lines of this new small offering. It really
looks like a BMW and that is already
half the battle won, right?
The engine is the new small 313cc
single cylinder which is unlikely to set
your pants on fire or to let you fizz like
James May would put it, but at least
it would be kind to your wallet at best
of times, especially from filling station
to filling station. International reports
suggest that this new lightweight
will keep you smiling in the corner
department, and with a the top end
speed of around 150kph, is also
fast enough to get you in some real
trouble.
This BMW bike of late is like
no other before, but a BMW it is
without a doubt. It’s fun, practical
and capable. Watch out KTM, the
Germans are coming…
You won’t find the postman riding
anyone of these small sportbikes.
They are proper and epic for what
they are intended to be. Hopefully
more people will realise how
important small bikes are for the
existence of all biking genres. And did
we mention fun? Epic!
