PREVENTING REPRESSION IN PERSONAL AND 

ARTISTIC EXPRESSION 

With a new right wing administration about to 

take office the increase of repression is inevitable. 

The inauguration of a schizophrenic, narcissistic, 

multiple personality disordered person in the office 

of President of the United States, indicates we 

are involved in an interesting time for history. 

The LGBT community is especially vulnerable to 

the hate mongering appointees Trump has made 

to his cabinet and advisers. Starting with Pense 

as his Vice President, who has proven to be one of 

the most divisive of politicians, as governor of Indiana 

opposing gay rights. Trump’s position has 

never been decisive when asked about issues from 

gender neutral rest rooms to same sex marriage. 

He and his cohorts cannot be trusted. There is an 

urgent requirement that all people who respect 

freedom of expression be prepared to rebut anything 

that is put forward from the Trump Administration. 

One example of the protection of repression of 

artistic expression is found in the Kinsey Institute 

for Sex Gender, and Reproduction. Alfred Kinsey 

founded the controversial institute in 1947 with 

the goal of studying human sexuality. Some of 

the issues Kinsey researched were, at the time, 

considered taboo and even criminal, and some 

still are. The research extended into same sex 

relationships, sexual identities, and also into the 

representation of sexuality in art. Objects of art 

have been donated by owners, artists, and organizations 

and sent to the Kinsey Institute at the 

University of Indiana in Bloomington, Indiana. 

Many of these would have been destroyed or 

hidden, especially works by gay artists. For eight 

decades the Kinsey Institute has been collecting 

and safely protecting works that may be considered 

erotic, forbidden, abnormal, etc., from harm. 

Famous artists as well as unknown individuals 

have sent work that is now over 1000 items. 

Works by George Platt Lynes, Mapllethorpe, Paul 

Cadmus, among others are part of the collection. 

Kinsey made a personal trip to bring some of 

the work of George Platt Lynes to Bloomington 

to assure Lynes that he would not be arrested for 

his work if it were confiscated for an 19th century 

Comstock Law which criminalized mailing 

of pornographic material. One of those works, 

a photograph, is shown here with the embrace 

of a black and caucasian man. Also there is the 

drawing by Paul Cadmus showing two nude male 

models embracing. These are among the many 

art works, sex toys, and other memorabilia that 

are housed in the Kinsey Institute. Ironically the 

institute is located in Indiana where homophobic 

Pense was governor. 

The motion picture, “Kinsey” about the work of 

Alfred Kinsey, played by Leum Neeson, is available 

on DVD. 

This is the last week of the 111 Art Show at Desert 

Patio on Highway 111 in Rancho Mirage. This 

show is one to be seen, representing a number of 

LGBT local artists.

A new Democrat. 

Well a new year is upon us and this is the 

last issue for 2016. I usually write a year in 

review and say something like “Wow! What 

a great year” and hopes for the New year. 

For many Democrat’s, hope for the New 

Year is harder to come by than unprotected 

gay sex, mostly because we thought the 

O-man’s socially liberal economic recovery 

would continue and a mandatory gay glitter 

release at the end of every school’s pledge of 

allegiance would continue. Nope it was boo 

to anti-bullying, that won the day. Do they 

still say the pledge or have we gotten rid of 

that too? I am personally happy to see that 

God is going to be making a comeback as 

well because in spite of what most people 

proclaim, the ultimate goal of God is peace 

among men. 

But God did not deliver Trump and the 

Trump family circus, the backwoods of 

America’s bulging middle helped a lot more 

than Moe or Joe. Let’s face it, most of this 

nation’s higher educated folk who are by 

default liberal, had long left the middle 

country leaving many communities without 

antique stores and interior design (the 

other electoral 99%.) Although it’s worth 

mentioning that many antique stores in the 

back middle 99% have become thrift stores 

with little knowledge of current values of old 

things. Still remember when you shop, no 

bright colors, enter one man at a time and 

don’t let your arms float about. Whatever 

you do, don’t squeal with delight over an 

original official Red Ryder, carbine action, 

two-hundred shot range model air rifle for 

only 5 dollars! It’s a vermin gun to them, for 

ridding the barn of it’s rats. Who knew 40 

acres and a mule would ever elect a racist 

leaning president? Bravo donkeys. 

Right now we need to talk about the Donald. 

Actually he is not a threat, after all he’s just a 

President with unlimited tweets but limited 

powers, as given to him by congress. Ok, 

actually that is not helping my case either as 

it is a Republican held congress... But we still 

have a very liberal supreme court with only 

one vacancy well maybe more in the next 

four years. Well thank you USA for creating 

a perfect storm, some may see a bit of a 

problem brewing here, others a good enough 

reason to ex pat. 

Therefore, The US of A may find itself in 

its biggest test since the Civil War or maybe 

the Civil Rights Act or even since we elected 

a black president. Ok our nation is tested a 

lot, often at every traffic stop, and maybe 

way too often for a mature nation. But it 

happened and like whatever happened to 

the Jell-o eating funny man the Cos, no 

one is quite sure how it happened or much 

less why, but it fucking happened and on 

our watch! What can we do about it? Well 

we have a plan but we are going to need a 

bigger boat, as I like to address every single 

problem since 1975. This is a new column 

political humor so let us know your “good” 

thoughts.

make it my year. The trash has been

have so many projects ahead of me, and

out into acting, singing, writing, etc.

BECAUSE I CAN! I don’t have to ride 

coat tails to lip-synch for a buck, I can 

create more. AND I WILL AND HAVE!

cold or something, but this year will

THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis 

Holidays are here. Time for family and 

friends - old and new. It’s good to be home 

for Christmas and New Years. 

This is the time to rest and recharge. To get 

ready for 2017 and the challenges that will 

come with it. 

We continue to see the President-elect naming 

rich white men to his cabinet and positions 

of authority. Practically no women and 

only one person of color - Ben Carson. The 

other thing they all have in column is that 

they are extremely conservative. Mr Trump 

keeps making love noises with Russia and 

threaten China. He also wants to expand 

and enhance our nuclear capability. I guess 

it’s not enough to be able to wipe out every 

man, woman and child several times over. 

Interest rates are already rising and still no 

real idea of how he expects to fulfill his campaign 

promises. 

In California, Governor Brown is gaining 

his fight back now that the Administration 

in Washington is changing. It’s good to see. 

I’m glad to see that here we are going to 

push back against what we can see coming. 

We all should be thankful that we live in the 

left coast and to a certain extent safe from 

these people. 

Our incoming Attorney General, Xavier 

Becerra is going to be phenomenal. Strong, 

resolute and more than willing to fight for 

our environment, civil rights and more. 

He truly is one of the Governor’s brightest 

appointments. I had hoped one day for him 

to be Speaker of the House but having him 

back in California is going to be excellent. 

How many more changes will come to California 

and the valley in 2017? 

We have two years left with Governor 

Brown and the campaign to replace him has 

already begun. Candidates are ranging from 

Lt Governor Newsom and State Treasurer 

Chiang to former Mayor Villagroisa, former 

State Controller Westly with more to 

come. All good people, all progressives but 

certainly with new ideas for our state but all 

ready and willing to be the bulwark needed. 

We will also be electing this February a 

new Chairman of the Democratic National 

Committee. I’ll be flying to Atlanta for the 

winter meeting of the DNC and helping to 

set the tone and direction for the Party. 

Lots of excitement and I’m looking forward 

to them.
