Many residents may have seen the work recently undertaken at
the historic mill chimney at Black Pits. The chimney is one of
the last remaining mill chimneys in Norden and there has been
long standing battle with developers to carry out the restoration
work. On page 65 Councillor Peter Winkler updates us on the
project which we are delighted to announce has now been
completed.
We hope you enjoy this issue and please get in touch if you have
any comments or feedback for us.
Until next month…….
This month Gary Heywood- Everett has written another
fascinating article which focuses on when the Sequah Medicine
Show came to Rochdale in the early 1890’s.
TINNITUS
If you suffer with a ringing, buzzing or humming sensation in the absence of an external sound source then you
may be experiencing Tinnitus.
It is a very common sensation, and approximately 30% of people will experience tinnitus at some point, BUT there are a small
number of people who experience more persistent and troublesome tinnitus who should seek help to alleviate it.
During 6-12 February 2017,The British Tinnitus Association (www.tinnitus.org.uk) and other services across the UK will be
holding a Tinnitus Awareness Week.
As Tinnitus is common for people with hearing loss and other ear problems it is often recommended to see your GP initially and
talk about the condition. Your GP may then refer you on to a specialist either in the NHS or in the Private sector, such as myself.
As a Specialist Hearing Therapist, I have helped many people who have troublesome tinnitus and work with local ENT specialists.
Each individual who experiences troublesome tinnitus must have a comprehensive Tinnitus Assessment appointment, which will
include diagnostic tests, information counselling and if required the recommendation of options such as sound therapy or sound
enrichment treatment.
During the week of 6-12 February we are offering a short tinnitus information session. To book your session please email
(chippendalehearing@hotmail.co.uk), text or telephone Chippendale Hearing Services (mobile 07900 466806) quoting
Tinnitus Awareness Week Offer.
Alternatively you can book an Initial Tinnitus Assessment appointment (approx. 1hour appointment slot) either as a self-referral
or via private health insurance.
archives
From the archives -
When the Sequah Medicine Show
came to Rochdale
The Cattle Market used to be a cobbled open space where the current Police Station now stands.
It was the venue for a series of performances in the early 1890’s which must have both puzzled
and amazed the good folk of Rochdale.
Imagine this. Through the streets of the town comes a large painted waggon or golden chariot pulled by a
team of horses. Behind it, a group of whooping characters dressed as cowboys and Indians and behind them
a brass band in full wild west outfits playing marching music. Driving the chariot was a man in a long tasselled
buckskin coat and Stetson hat. A stage is set up at the Cattle Market over which the word ‘SEQUAH’ is
emblazoned and a fairground steam organ would be playing to draw the crowds. After the procession, the
frontiersman calling himself the Great Sequah, climbs onto the stage and putting himself forward as a medical
practitioner, claims to represent The Yankee Company and begins to sing the praises of a rheumatic cure to
the milling hundreds who have followed the procession.
After some entertainment, the crowd would be asked if there
was anyone there in need of a cure. Of course a number of
troubled souls came forward and – whilst the band played
‘forte’ at the side – one by one they were ‘rubbed’ with
Sequah Oil. According to eye witnesses (recalling the event
in the Rochdale Observer in 1928) the infirm would
suddenly spring around the stage, dance a jig with the
Great Sequah and run off into the crowd, cured. Of course
this led to much selling of the purported cure, either there
or at local chemist shops which had been primed with
the ‘cure.’
Of course there have been many medicine shows, quack
doctors or snake-oil salesmen, but Sequah seems to have been a popular and regular
visitor to Rochdale. In fact, the Sequah Medicine Company had begun as early as 1887 and its ‘patent
medicines’ eventually sold across Britain, Ireland, the West Indies and South Africa. There seems to have been
some dispute as to who the showman was who visited Rochdale. Some said that his name was Hannaway
Roye from Huddersfield, others that he was William Henry Hartley who sold his Sequah Prairie Flower and
Sequah Oil. William Hartley, from Silsden in West Yorkshire certainly seems to have been the original ‘Great
Sequah’ but due to its popularity, many ‘Sequahs’
toured the country – up to 23 shows at any one
time - and it is likely that a Lancashire Sequa
landed in Rochdale, drawing thousands of
customers who paid hundreds of pounds a day to
be rid of their infirmities.
Sequa would also appear at the Old Circus (later
the Hippodrome) in the town, offering to pull teeth
from the aching mouths of audiences. This would
be done for free, the archives recording that 7 or
8 would come forward and – again the band
playing loudly to hide the cries of suffering –
teeth would be extracted with little apparent pain
being shown, the Great Sequah brandishing
huge forceps and – bizarrely – wearing a
lightbulb on his forehead ! The finale was
usually a man with a particularly swollen face
having a tooth pulled and the extraction held
aloft over a cheering crowd.
Such medicine shows drew the vulnerable to
part with their hard-earned money until the
British government declared such activities
illegalin the late 1890’s. William Hartley
died a bankrupt in 1924 but before that, by
the turn of the century, Sequah as a
company had gone into liquidation and was
seen no more on the streets of Rochdale, or
any other, town.
ASHWORTH VALLEY
BIG CLEAN UP
The BIG CLEAN UP got underway shortly after 10.00
am with volunteers starting to arrive on mass through
the fog all geared up and ready to go and they
continued to arrive..and arrive...and arrive.
We had just under 80 volunteers in all!
They were all fired up with a continuous
supply of bacon and egg butties, teas
and coffee, the task began in earnest
to retrieve the tyres up a steep
embankment to Ashworth Road. The
human chain of volunteers retrieved 5
farm trailer loads, we had estimated
200 tyres, we ended up with well in
excess with nearer the 700 mark!!
Having cleared up this site, several
dedicated volunteers went beyond
the call of duty in following Paul
Ellison and John Roberts lead and
went on to clear a second site which
they had begun to clear up at
Splash Corner/Black Dad Lane.
This site was horrendous with a mix
of tyres, fridge freezers and
household rubbish. They had to
use ropes and brute force to drag
debris to the top.
We cannot get over the sense of
community spirit, comradery with
volunteers coming from far and
wide with so many people gave
their time and effort and what an
achievement. Thank you one and
all.
Restoration of
Chimney at Black Pits
Many residents will be delighted to have seen
work being undertaken recently at the historic
mill chimney at Black Pits. Although the signs
read ‘demolition’ this was somewhat misleading
as professional steeplejacks were actually working
to restore this local landmark.
The chimney, which is one of the last remaining mill chimneys in
Norden, has been the subject of an ongoing battle with developers
who, after having agreed to carry out restoration works as part of
the housing development at the old Dexine site, had stalled the
project.
Councillor Peter Winkler said: “Getting works done without
significant loss of the chimney’s height has been a hard and long-fought battle
with the developers. Lots of local people have expressed their concern that this
local landmark could be lost if work to restore it were not completed in a
timely manner. We have had to use every effort to get this outcome, from
social media to letters to Westminster, but I am delighted that, through our
continued commitment and ongoing discussions with the planning officers
and the developers, work has now been undertaken. The best news is that
this has not been done at the expense of residents or the taxpayer as the
work has, quite rightly been funded by the developers.”
“Some residents had concerns about this being a dangerous structure,
though that has never been the case. We have always taken every care to ensure that this
never posed a risk to anyone living underneath. Whilst we have been pursuing restoration
works the Council’s building control experts have been out to assess the chimneys
stability.”
A full independent report carried out by professional steeplejacks said that the structure was
stable but works were advised. It identified that cap stones which sat at the top of the
chimney were best removed as they were too damaged to be repaired. The good news is that
only a limited amount of brickwork had to be removed before a new cap could be installed.
Following repairs to damaged brickwork, removal of the vegetation which had self-seeded in
the brick joints, and a general clean the chimney is now safe for future generations.
Peter added: “Whilst some fail to see the importance of the chimney I know so many people
who have told me how happy they are to see it being brought back to it’s former glory. This is
a part of our heritage. Some of the bricks that were removed have been salvaged and it is my intention that these be used as
part of an information point which will give people an insight into why this is such a significant landmark to our village’s history.”
UPDATE: Greater Manchester
Spatial Framework.
Proposal to build 750 executive
houses on land off Norden Road.
Since the Public Meeting at Bamford Chapel on 21st November, an Action Committee was
formed under the chairmanship of Angela Smith. A lot of hard work has been undertaken to
raise awareness by distributing 1000s of leaflets across the community, and producing a 40
page report that will be submitted to the Greater Manchester Combined Authorities before the
deadline of 16th of January, lodging our opposition against the Spatial Framework’s plans to
develop on our Green Belt.
Funds have been raised through the community to instruct a Specialist
Planning Barrister, to provide guidance and support with the submission; they
have recommended attaching as many supporting signatories as possible to
strengthen our case. This can be done through our Facebook page 'Save
Bamford Green Belt' survey and by sending an e mail to
savebamfordgreenbelt@outlook.com. This has been very successful,
collecting in excess of 1,500 details so far.
Bamford is a backwater and transport connections to Manchester or the
Motorway are at least 3 miles by road. Norden Road is an unclassed
road and connects with a B Class road at Bury & Rochdale Old Road.
These roads are extremely congested at peak times. Over the last 40
66
years there has been extensive house building, across Norden and Bamford
and during this time the road infrastructure has not been upgraded. The Spatial Framework is a 20 year
plan and further house building would require significant upgrades to be made to the road network, which
potentially could involve the widening of Norden Road or worse.
The site in question has 10 football
pitches which are used by over 700
children every week FROM Bridge FC, for
football coaching and league matches.
The site also houses Bamford Fieldhouse
Cricket Club and Rochdale Tennis Club. This
is Bamford’s only green space that is
accessible to the public, due to the many
public rights of way that criss-cross the site.
Norden has Jubilee Park, Heritage Green and
Hutchinson Road Recreation Park, Spotland
has Denehurst Park. Bamford will have nothing if this site is used for housing.
On Saturday 7th January at 10:30am a
protest ramble took place, starting at Bamford
Village Green and finished at Bamford Chapel
where the campaigners were served
refreshments and were able to receive updates.
Residents, supporters, local councillors, and the children and parents from Bridge FC came out in their
masses, to support the campaign to protect our Green Belt site. The event was extremely successful and was
attended by nearly 1,000 people.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have donated and given us their
Crispy Haggis Fritters with a Neep and Tattie Salad
I’ll do anything to sell a few books to the Scottish!! Although they’ll
probably kill me for tweaking their national dish. Joking aside its pretty
damn tasty and the Lanark dressing just brings the dish together.
Serves 4
200g Haggis – lining removed and cut into cubes
55g flour
1 egg – lightly beaten
100g bread crumbs
Vegetable oil for deep frying
1 egg yolk
1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
100ml olive oil
25g Lanark blue cheese
Pic courtesy of Tim Bradley rochdale observer.jpg
1 small swede – cut into chunks, then boiled until soft
1 potato – cut into chunks, then boiled until soft
1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
3 tablespoons olive oil
Few strands of fresh tarragon
To Serve
1 head red chicory
1 head white chicory
Few leaves of bull’s blood
Bunch mizuna leaves
1) Take the Haggis and toss in the flour, the egg and then
the breadcrumbs, place in the fridge until ready to use.
2) For the dressing, blend the egg yolk, vinegar and
mustard together drizzle in the oil and then the cheese.
3) Combine the swede and potato, mash slightly then add
the vinegar, oil and tarragon, season to taste.
4) Heat the vegetable oil to 180o C and deep fry the haggis
until golden - drain.
5) Arrange the chicory, bulls blood and mizuna on a plate,
place the neeps and tatties in the middle, arrange Haggis
and finally drizzle over the dressing.
Natural Heritage And Built Heritage
- A Village Under Pressure.
The start of a new year often leads to a reassessment of many aspects of life. In the case of
Norden , should this include a new appraisal of the threats to our unique environment?
Much of the character of our Village is derived from the natural environment;the rivers, moorland and green spaces
which are part of our Pennine surroundings. The natural environment is complimented and enhanced by a rich built
heritage , much of which has it`s roots the Industrial Revolution and Victorian enterprise. These key aspects combine
to make an important contribution to the elements which make Norden a special place to live. As a new year begins
,it is hard to ignore the threats and challenges to these elements of our area-they are many and diverse.
The Boxing Day floods of 2015 caused considerable damage to rivers and water courses throughout the region, much
of which remains unremediated and therefore a risk if the deluge is repeated. It remains to be seen what actions
government agencies will take in 2017 to rectify matters.
Questions remain over the expansion of Scout Moor Wind Farm , following the Public Inquiry . Are there really "very
special circumstances" associated with this vast industrial installation which should allow a massive commercial
concern to drive a coach and horses through the usual protections given to Green Belt? Will this open the floodgates
of "very special circumstances" all over the area?(there has , after all been a proliferation of singleton wind turbine
springing up all over our ward since the original wind farm gained approval).
The proposal contained in the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework Report to put 600+ houses on a prime green
space in Bamford, whilst destroying important sports facilities which have taken decades to develop surely requires as
many residents as possible to support and join this important Bamford campaign? This scheme will undoubtedly
have a seismic impact on Norden and other neighbouring wards, so please look carefully at the article elsewhere in
Streetwise and have your say.
In spite of the exceptional efforts of residents, our ward Councillors and dedicated Council Officers, the epidemic of
illegal and dangerous fly tipping in Ashworth Valley continues largely unabated. This behaviour is not only destroying
the enjoyment of this special area for residents and visitors alike,it also carries with it a serious risk of accident and
injury if left unchecked.
The relentless pace of expansion of our Village over the last 25years has created a situation where key parts of our
built heritage have been sacrificed to the ambition of developers; if this trend continues, the risk is that Norden will
become a featureless redbrick commuter village like so many up and down the Country. It is therefore encouraging to
report that efforts of one of our Councillors (Peter Winkler) reflecting the views of many residents, and a sympathetic
developer have insured the future of Black Pitts Chimney. Recent works on this structure means that this key
landmark will be preserved .
A Real Community Partnership
Husband and wife team, Cllr Surinder and Cecile Biant, presented Springhill Hospice’s Director of Clinical
Services, Sheila Johnson, with a very generous gift this Christmas, in the form of a cheque for £10,000,
raised in their roles of Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale 2015-2016. The Councillors, who represent
Spotland and Falinge, along with Tracie Powers, a volunteer from Vintage Worx at Falinge Park who acted
as Chair of the Mayor’s Charity Committee, visited the Broad Lane palliative care centre. Sheila learnt of
their efforts in raising money for not just Springhill Hospice but also other charities including Petrus, the
Deaf Children’s Society and Shopmobility.
“We all thoroughly enjoyed fundraising for such deserving
causes, especially as we put on such a large variety of events.
The committee took on everything from home baking to
ballroom dancing competitions, attended a spectacular
fundraising dinner organised by the Council of Mosques and
arranged our night of glamour at the Town Hall in the form of
The Mayors Ball” said former Mayor, Cllr Biant.
Tracie Powers, Chair of the Mayor’s Charity Committee added “It
was great fun and an honour. I learnt a lot throughout the year
and am looking forward to putting my experiences to good use
Sheila Johnson (Director of Clinical Services, Springhill
Hospice) Cllr Surinder Biant, Cllr Cecile Biant and Tracie
Powers (Chair of Cllr Biant’s Charity Committee in his Mayoral
Year 2015-2016 and volunteer at Vintage Worx, Falinge Park)
Cllr Cecile Biant, Sheila Johnson, Cllr Surinder Biant and Tracie
Powers
in Falinge at Vintage Worx”.
All in all the team raised an astonishing £43,000, with an
terrific £16,000 being raised at the Council of Mosques’ dinner
alone.
“It’s been a great experience all round, from our first meeting
when everyone was throwing ideas into the pot, to seeing the
final events and being able to make a difference to groups in
the community who need it most” said former Mayoress Cecile,
who added, “It’s hard work but very rewarding”, with the
former Mayor, Surinder adding “I want to put on record our
gratitude to my superb Charity Committee, especially Dorothy
Johnstone and her team at the Town Hall”
On receiving the £10,000 donation, Sheila Johnson said
“We’re very privileged to receive such outstanding support from
the community we serve, the team here are so very grateful to
have been chosen as one of the charities that Cllr Biant
supported in his year as Mayor of Rochdale, especially when
there are so many other organisation in our Borough that could
also put the money to good use”
CUT YOUR
ELECTRICITY BILLS
AND GET PAID FOR
THE ELECTRICITY
YOU GENERATE!
Established over 25 years ago Electronica
Systems are renewable energy specialists
and amongst the market leaders, providing
bespoke services to both the domestic and
commercial markets.
All the products that we supply are high
efficiency providing significant environmental
and economical benefits to the property
owner.
Our Solar Panels are the best performing due
to the fact that they are supplied credible,
ethical and established companies.
Solar PV panels are amongst the most effective
and popular means of renewable energy
generation available and due to their simplicity,
durability and efficiency – are being installed in
ever increasing volumes. Even on a cloudy day
they can convert the light into substantial
amounts of electricity which can be used in the
home – or exported to the national grid if not
used. Electricity exported to the grid is charted
by an export meter which ensures that the
home owner is paid for the power they sell.
PV Solar panel systems are also a guaranteed
means of income thanks to the Feed in Tariff
Scheme which pays homeowners a set rate for
every unit of electricity they produce (whether
it is used or sold back to the grid).
Solar PV Panels can also be installed on
commercial and industrial premises. Depending
upon the size and generation capabilities of
the PV panels, a company can greatly reduce its
energy costs whilst also generating
supplementary revenue through the Feed in
Tariff Scheme. In addition to the financial
benefits, the installation of a solar PV system
also helps the organization get a step closer to
attaining carbon neutrality.
