On page 51, Councillor Neil Butterworth writes
about what makes him a proud Lancastrian and the
history behind the County Palentine of Lancashire.
This month, the Milnrow and District Women’s
Institute continue with their appeal to the women
of Milnrow and Newhey to get involved in this
popular group – they meet on the second Tuesday
of every month at St James Church, St James Street
Milnrow and new members are always welcome. WI
member, Helen Hollinshead, has also supplied her
own recipe for Smoked Haddock Chowder which is
definitely a nutritional winter warmer!
This month Gary Heywood- Everett has written
another fascinating article which focuses on when
the Sequah Medicine Show came to Rochdale in the
early 1890’s.
We hope you enjoy this issue and please get in
touch if you have any comments or feedback for us.
Until next month…….
Local Care from a Local Company
The team at Home Instead Senior Care in Rochdale is passionate
about providing care to its clients which not only improves the
quality of their lives but those of their families too. The company
specialises in providing care for older people in their own homes.
Commenting on the service, David Bradshaw said, “We are passionate
about providing the highest standard of person-centred care. Our ethos
is simple – treat others as we would wish to be treated ourselves. In
doing this we are improving our clients’ quality of life and helping them
to remain in their own homes, leading an independent life.”
Home Instead clients have a care plan tailored specifically to their own
needs and the service is extremely flexible and ranges from help a few
hours a day to 24 hour care. Services can include personal care such as
assistance with bathing, dressing and medications; home help covering
housework, shopping, meal preparation and household duties; and
companionship services that can involve everything from escorting clients
on visits or appointments to simple conversation and good company.
The company also provides a range of specialist services, which include
Alzheimer’s and dementia care, convalescence care and respite care.
Home Instead Caregivers complete a training programme designed by
national and international renowned dementia and Alzheimer's experts.
This means our Caregivers are provided with the latest in Alzheimer's
education and home care techniques, so clients are assured their loved
one is being cared for by a trusted professional.
The team at Home Instead knows that quality care cannot be delivered
in short, rushed visits so care calls are of a minimum 1 hour duration.
They also understand how important it is for clients to have the right
caregiver for their needs. Time is taken to
carefully match caregivers to clients so that they share common areas
of interest and can form an immediate bond.
Home Instead only employs the most caring, considerate and empathetic
caregivers – people to whom making a difference to the lives of others
is important. Caregivers are carefully selected, are CRB checked and
have to provide six references.
Home Instead Senior Care is committed to making a difference,
and regard it as a special privilege to look after people with love,
care and compassion - they take their responsibilities very
seriously indeed.
Give A Dog A Holiday Home
Our dogs need you! Are you a dog lover that can lend a paw by providing a loving holiday
home to one of the Digs for Dogs pack whilst their owners are away on holiday or business?
The Digs for Dogs holiday home boarding service provides our pooches and their owners with
the perfect alternative to kennels, and has become so popular that we now urgently need to
expand our network of hosts.
Being a home boarder brings all the benefits of having a dog at home but without the full
time responsibility of owning one yourself;
l A dog is the perfect fun loving friend to keep you company
l Walking a dog gives you a great reason to get out and exercise in the fresh air
l If you’re already a dog owner, having a dog to stay can provide companionship for your
own dog
l Having a dog around the home is proven to reduce your stress levels
l Taking a dog to your local dog walking spot can improve your social life
Could you open up your home to a doggy for their holiday?
Digs for Dogs are looking for honest, reliable and trustworthy dog lovers that can welcome a
four-legged friend into their home. We meet with all our prospective home boarders to
discuss your previous experience with pets and to establish the types of dogs you would be
happy to board. This ensures that we only ever offer you a dog that suits your current
lifestyle and you’ll only need to accept bookings as and when you wish to. You will be
required to walk, feed and provide care for your guest as specified by their owners. Dog food,
beds, leads and any other essentials will be provided at the beginning of their stay. Some
dogs will only require an overnight or weekend stay, whereas others might have their bags
packed and be set for a holiday stay of over a week or more. Sometimes we will bring a dog
to your home before their stay to give you the chance to get acquainted with your visitor and
to ensure both you and the dog get along.
Digs for Dogs only provide boarding for well behaved, non-aggressive and house trained
pooches. We are fully licenced and insured for your peace of mind.
Saving our Green Belt in Newhey!
Henry Ford once said, "Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is
success." That quote encapsulates the feeling in our villages against building on our precious green belt. As
you may know, we came together at a packed out meeting in Newhey Lodge in January. In what's been
called, "The biggest planning decision since World War 2" in our area - the consultation on the Greater
Manchester Spatial Framework brought our community together.
Put simply, this consultation is about building 120 houses on green belt in Newhey plus giving away lots more land for industrial
space. Not just that - but there are plans to put another 1400 houses and half a million square metres of commercial land across
the River Beal in Shaw and Crompton. We simply do not have the infrastructure to cope with this. Our already stretched roads
couldn't cope; neither could our schools and certainly not our emergency services including the Royal Oldham Hospital, Rochdale
Infirmary and our doctor's surgeries and dentists. We needed to stand together and say a huge 'no' to these proposals that would
change our way of life forever.
Councillor Irene Davidson and David
Hennigan with the 'objection's box'
You did exactly that - dozens of you
marched up to Tandle Hill alongside
thousands of people in other
communities affected. Many
residents came to the fore during this
consultation including people like
Judith Jones, Ellen Kay, Irene
Davidson and Dave Bamford. It
culminated in an emergency meeting
at Newhey Lodge just before the close
of the consultation. Over a massive
weekend of community campaigning
- over 800 formal objections were
signed, hundreds of emails sent and
banners erected in our villages
making our point.
It was standing room only at the packed public meeting at Newhey Lodge. Newhey Lodge had given us their function room for
free. Speakers at the meeting included Judith Jones, Ellen Kay, Gerard Booth and Chris Sandham. More importantly, you had
your say too. The meeting was hugely successful and just goes to show how much local people in our villages’ value our green
spaces and rural way of life. This is just the first stage in a process that has united our area. People left the meeting much
clearer about the campaign and hundreds then had their say. All paper responses were delivered to Manchester Town Hall by my
office. This is just the start though and we will be building on this coming together of locals to improve where we live."
Keith Swift, Judith Jones, Andy Kelly, Rick Wallis and Ellen Kay were just some of the
residents who delivered posters and leaflets against plans to build on our green belt.
Judith Jones, a
green belt
campaigner who
played a blinder
said, "What a
fantastic turn out
to our public
meeting against
the proposal to
build on Green
Belt land
in Newhey last
Well done to
everyone. We are
being listened to,
so please don't think you can't
make a difference, TOGETHER WE
CAN."
Speaking on Facebook, local
Letting Agent Ellen Kay said, "I am
so proud to be part of our
wonderful community & our
villages who are working together
to "save our villages” Our meeting
on Friday the 13th
at Newhey Lodge showed how
much we care about our villages
and we have had an
Gerard Booth, Ellen Kay and Judith Jones address the meeting.
overwhelming response with lots of
people volunteering their help."
We will be meeting again later this month to discuss the next move. Our objections will now be carefully considered but we have
let Greater Manchester Council bosses including local Council Leader Richard Farnell know that we don't want our area becoming
an urban sprawl. They will report back to us in July at the earliest. Thank you to everyone who got involved - together we are
stronger, together we can save our green belt... not just for us, but for future generations.
From the
archives
From the archives -
When the Sequah Medicine Show
came to Rochdale
The Cattle Market used to be a cobbled open space where the current Police Station now stands.
It was the venue for a series of performances in the early 1890’s which must have both puzzled
and amazed the good folk of Rochdale.
Imagine this. Through the streets of the town comes a large painted waggon or golden chariot pulled by a
team of horses. Behind it, a group of whooping characters dressed as cowboys and Indians and behind them
a brass band in full wild west outfits playing marching music. Driving the chariot was a man in a long tasselled
buckskin coat and Stetson hat. A stage is set up at the Cattle Market over which the word ‘SEQUAH’ is
emblazoned and a fairground steam organ would be playing to draw the crowds. After the procession, the
frontiersman calling himself the Great Sequah, climbs onto the stage and putting himself forward as a medical
practitioner, claims to represent The Yankee Company and begins to sing the praises of a rheumatic cure to
the milling hundreds who have followed the procession.
After some entertainment, the crowd would be asked if there
was anyone there in need of a cure. Of course a number of
troubled souls came forward and – whilst the band played
‘forte’ at the side – one by one they were ‘rubbed’ with
Sequah Oil. According to eye witnesses (recalling the event
in the Rochdale Observer in 1928) the infirm would
suddenly spring around the stage, dance a jig with the
Great Sequah and run off into the crowd, cured. Of course
this led to much selling of the purported cure, either there
or at local chemist shops which had been primed with
the ‘cure.’
Of course there have been many medicine shows, quack
doctors or snake-oil salesmen, but Sequah seems to have been a popular and regular
visitor to Rochdale. In fact, the Sequah Medicine Company had begun as early as 1887 and its ‘patent
medicines’ eventually sold across Britain, Ireland, the West Indies and South Africa. There seems to have been
some dispute as to who the showman was who visited Rochdale. Some said that his name was Hannaway
Roye from Huddersfield, others that he was William Henry Hartley who sold his Sequah Prairie Flower and
Sequah Oil. William Hartley, from Silsden in West Yorkshire certainly seems to have been the original ‘Great
Sequah’ but due to its popularity, many ‘Sequahs’
toured the country – up to 23 shows at any one
time - and it is likely that a Lancashire Sequa
landed in Rochdale, drawing thousands of
customers who paid hundreds of pounds a day to
be rid of their infirmities.
Sequa would also appear at the Old Circus (later
the Hippodrome) in the town, offering to pull teeth
from the aching mouths of audiences. This would
be done for free, the archives recording that 7 or
8 would come forward and – again the band
playing loudly to hide the cries of suffering –
teeth would be extracted with little apparent pain
being shown, the Great Sequah brandishing
huge forceps and – bizarrely – wearing a
lightbulb on his forehead ! The finale was
usually a man with a particularly swollen face
having a tooth pulled and the extraction held
aloft over a cheering crowd.
Such medicine shows drew the vulnerable to
part with their hard-earned money until the
British government declared such activities
illegalin the late 1890’s. William Hartley
died a bankrupt in 1924 but before that, by
the turn of the century, Sequah as a
company had gone into liquidation and was
seen no more on the streets of Rochdale, or
any other, town.
Milnrow Brass Band
The Milnrow Brass Band is a top class group of amateur musicians aged between 18&65.
The Band is ranked among the top 30 in the world and competes at the highest level,
having held their position at the British Open Championship for the last 4 years.
Whilst concert and competition
engagements see the band travelling
both locally and nationally, the Band’s
roots are firmly planted in Milnrow and
the village and community are still very
strongly supported with engagements
such as Remembrance Sunday, Milnrow
Carnival, carolling round the village and
the annual Christmas Concert at
Milnrow Cricket Club being firm
favourites of the Band.
Milnrow Band has no corporate sponsorship
and relies heavily on the engagements we
attend and the support of locals and
business alike.
History
The Band’s roots trace back to 1869, when
it formed as the St. Stephen's Band. Before
the Second World War, the band changed its name twice more, finally settling on the name of the village in which it
was based.
From this period until 1995, Milnrow remained in the lower sections, but then began its successful competitive drive.
Over the next decade, Milnrow progressed through the sections, finally achieving Championship Section status in
2006 and has proudly held the position ever since.
Recent Success
In 2011 the Band enjoyed a further string of successes and, in 2013, qualified for the National Finals at the Royal
Albert Hall, the first time in its long history. Keen to build on this success Milnrow won the 2013 Grand Shield,
qualifying for the British Open - another first for the band.
Since 2013, the Band has grown from
strength to strength obtaining many
accolades such as runners up at the All
England Masters, winners of Rochdale
Contest, a string of prizes at the Whit
Friday competitions in Saddleworth as
well as maintaining its place at the
British Open Championships.
The cost of running the Band is around £20,000 per annum and, without corporate sponsorship, this is quite a
difficult task. The Band are therefore always on the lookout for further engagements and financial support. Should
you wish to book the band, or look to support in any way, then please contact Natalie Beer on 07795 148620.
Catch us at Milnrow Cricket Club on Friday 21st April for our annual St George’s Day concert
CRIME PREVENTION TIPS/ADVICE – MESSAGE FROM YOUR LOCAL POLICE FORCE
Do you know how to stay safe online?
Our new campaign, #trappedintheweb warns people of the potential of
becoming a victim of crime on the internet, focusing on cybercrime in general
but also drawing on four crime types – child sexual exploitation, sextortion,
fraud and human trafficking.
Cybercrime is one of the fastest growing crimes in the UK, affecting both
businesses and individuals. It includes a range of cyber-dependent (which can
only be committed online) and cyber enabled (which can be conducted on or
offline) crimes.
There are a number of steps you can take to help make sure you don't get
trapped in the web and become a victim of crime online
Don't believe everything you see
Not everyone is honest and not everything you see on the internet is
what it claims to be. Use your judgement - if something seems too
good to be true it probably is
l If you receive an unexpected email asking for your bank
details, or a message from a stranger asking for some
photographs, take a moment to question whether they are
who they say they are.
l Remember that you don't always really know who you are
talking to online.
Be diligent
Be prepared to question what you see online
l
l
l
l
l
Is the website a respectable source?
Is it likely that your bank would ask you to email them your
personal data?
Does it feel right that you have won a lottery you've never
heard of and never entered?
Is the person asking you to send them a
personal video really who they say
they are?
Is your new friend really the age
they say they are?
If you have any suspicions or doubts, or if
something just doesn't just feel right, it's
best to be cautious and step away.
Don't get caught by phishing
l Beware of phishing, which is when you receive emails or
messages designed to get your personal information from you
to be used inappropriately
l Don't respond to emails asking you for your personal
information and don't share information if you are unsure of
the source
Protect yourself on social media
Check your privacy settings on your social media accounts as your personal
information could be used by criminals.
Use protection
l It's simple enough - use protection when online. Antivirus
software can help protect your computer from viruses, worms,
malware and ransomware.
l Always make sure you keep your antivirus up to date to keep
you protected from the latest threats online.
Stay up to date
l Updates for operating systems like Windows and Mac OS are
released regularly and often help make your computer more
secure and help protect against security threats.
l Keeping your web browser (such as Chrome, Firefox or
Microsoft Edge) up to date also helps protect your computer.
Get help
If you suspect you have been a victim of cyber crime contact us to report it.
Call 101 and give as much detail as you can.
Crime Figures for the Past Month
What makes me a Proud Lancastrian?
Well, let’s see... On November 27th, 1295 the first elected representatives from Lancashire were called to
Westminster by King Edward I to attend what later became known as "The Model Parliament".
Town criers throughout the county read out the Lancashire Day proclamation:
To the people of the city and county palatine of
Lancaster Greetings!
Know ye that this day, November 27th in the
year of our Lord One Thousand Two Hundred
and Ninety Five, the 23rd year of the reign of
His Majesty King Edward I, Duke of Lancaster,
is Lancashire Day
Know ye also, and rejoice, that by virtue of His
Majesty's County Palatine of Lancaster, the
citizens of the Hundreds of Lonsdale, North and
South of the Sands, Amounderness, Leyland,
Blackburn, Salford and West Derby are forever
entitled to style themselves Lancastrians.
Throughout the County Palatine, from the
Furness Fells to the River Mersey, from the Irish
Sea to the Pennines, this day shall ever mark the
people's pleasure in that excellent distinction -
true Lancastrians, proud of the Red Rose and
loyal to our Sovereign Duke.
GOD BLESS LANCASHIRE
AND GOD SAVE THE KING,
DUKE OF LANCASTER.
Duke and was also granted Palatinate powers - the royal powers, or the
powers belonging to the palace. These powers lapsed with Henry's Death, but
were restored to the most famous Duke of Lancaster, John of Gaunt and were
made hereditary. Palatinate status was granted to Lancashire because of its
strategic position in defending England from the Scots, and it conferred legal
recognition of the extraordinary powers of the Duke within Lancashire.
On a slightly less grand scale, I am sure you will have noticed the sign (photo
above,) proclaiming “The Historic County of Yorkshire” as you drive out of
Newhey up Huddersfield
Road, well, I have already
actioned the erection of
anew sign on
Huddersfield Road to the
effect of “You are now
entering the historic
County Palatine of
Lancashire” along with
a rose which will give
visitors an idea of how
much we value the
fact that we are proud
Lancashire folk! If
anyone has any neat
ideas for the sign,
please let me know,
contact details
below.
Fast forward to January 1973, and, dare I mention it... the United Kingdom,
the Republic of Ireland and Denmark enter the European Economic
Community, which later becomes the European Union, ouch!
Following elections later that year the Greater Manchester County Council was
launched in shadow form before taking power on April 1st 1974. Around the
same time, Harold Wilson led his second Labour Government.
Much to the surprise of many people, the appearance of this administrative
county did not make us all Mancunians, as we lived (and still do!) in
Lancashire, making us Lancastrians!
Fast forward again to 2016, I
was privileged to be present
for the flag raising ceremony
on November 27th, to
celebrate the County Palatine
we all love. I have often
wondered, “What does The
County palatine mean?”
Well, in 1351 Henry, Earl
of Lancaster was made a
Although I am not
against big
business, but, in
these days of
multi national corporations who have a
habit of stripping localities of hard earned money to provide returns to
shareholders from across the world it was really invigorating to celebrate our
proud and beautiful county on November 27th and I will continue to support
this tradition. We now see many local economies beginning to realise the
need to set up an economy that contains “sticky money” which circulates
locally as many times as possible rather than being syphoned away by the
multi nationals, as “sticky money” benefits local residents much more than
that which is syphoned off, it is the kind of economy that supports local people
and provides social cohesion and inclusion.
So, there are many reasons I am a proud Lancastrian! Oh, I almost forgot,
Rochdale Hornets, Rochdale Golf Club and Bury Black Pudding also play a
part!
MILNROW LIBRARY
HEALTH WALKS
This is the third of a series of 90 minute circular walks around the beautiful local countryside that
Milnrow Library Walk and Talk Group regularly enjoy.
The Route is simple to follow, just have suitable outdoor walking shoes or boots, and a coat to protect you depending upon the weather. A
hiking pole and a mobile telephone are also worth taking. OS sheet SD81/91 or A - Z Newhey to Shaw covers this area of the walk which is of
outstanding beauty, and within the Green Belt that divides our two villages.
The Route
Leaving the Library entrance, turn left and proceed along Newhey Road, under
the Motorway Bridge, past the Memorial Park and down to the junction with
Elizabethan Way. Go across the main road and proceed down Bentgate Street
which brings you to the entrance of Ellenroad Farm.
Continue through the farm gate, and across the bridge spanning the River Beal.
Often there are Grey Heron and other water fowl to be seen on this stretch of the
river. Proceed up the paved track with the motorway over to the right, and
Garfield lodge fishing lake over the fields to the left. It is a steady climb up this
track, so take your time and enjoy the views. Nearing the top, turn left through
a stile at the side of a steel gate and go in the direction of the Way Marker, up
along another inclined track.
Again observe a panoramic view of Newhey
with the fishing lake in the fields below and
mature deciduous woodland trees to the left.
The end of this inclined track is restricted by a
steel gate, so turn right and proceed in the
direction of the Way Marker across the field
path in a southern direction. At the end of the
field look behind you for a panoramic view
encompassing Crompton Moor to the west,
Newhey and Ogden, Milnrow and Hollingworth
Lake to the north, Rochdale to the east with a
background of Brown Wardle and Middle Hill
extending to Scout Moor and Knowl Hill. These
views certainly make the incline exertions
worthwhile!
52 Visit our website www.streetwisemag.co.uk for all the info about the Streetwise magazines

Pass through a stile and continue south bearing
left following a stone wall on the right which
leads to a gate with another Way Marker sign.
This is an area of green belt, rural footpaths and
public rights of way (eg Crompton Circuit, Oldham
Way, Rochdale Way) which is threatened with
massive redevelopment plans under the Greater
Manchester Spacial Framework by Oldham and
Rochdale Councils.
Follow the field path with the stone wall to the left,
and then through a gate in the wall, continue with
the wall on your right and head across the field in
the direction of the wind turbine. The skyline of
Manchester with its tall buildings stretches out
before you, and over to the left is Shaw and High
Crompton. At the end of the field turn right and follow to a stile
with Crompton Circuit way markers, along the next field
keeping the fence on your left, to the next stile with a Sign
Post.
Turn right at this junction following the footpath in the
direction of Bryney Heyes Farm (1/4 mile) with the fence on
your left, go over one stile then pass the hawthorn hedge on
the left and proceed through a gate and forward in the
direction of tall trees and with the farm to the left. The path
leads through a tree coppice and two stiles, then into a field
where it continues along a raised banking. Head north
along this raised path, with the Business Park and M62
motorway down to the left.
This path leads to two field stiles and down to Garside Farm (circa 1697). Go through the side gate and back onto the paved track
leading down to Ellenroad Farm. Return to the library via Bentgate Street and Newhey Road.
This walk distance is 4 miles and the Milnrow Library Walk and Talk Group do it in 90 minutes. However for the first time, do it at your leisure
and look out for a variety of bird and wild life within this precious Green Belt.
The Walk and Talk Group meet at Milnrow Library for different 60 to 90 minute walks every Monday leaving the Library at 10 am. It is free,
friendly and everyone is welcome.
Hake with Confetti of Vegetables
and Girolle Mushrooms
Hake is one of those fished that can take on really robust and
earthy flavours and this recipe uses ingredients that provide exactly
that. The wild girolle mushrooms are classed, alongside ceps, as
the most flavoursome mushrooms around. Wash them well to
remove any soil and dirt, but do not soak them otherwise they at
like a sponge and absorb too much water. Once washed pat them
dry with a paper towel. Girolles have a firm, yellowish-white fruity
flesh with a slight pepper taste. They are the perfect
accompaniment to chicken or fish.
Serves 4
1 tablespoon olive oil
4 x 180g fillets of hake-skin on but boned
1 small carrot-cut into very small dice
½ courgette-cut into very small dice
1 tablespoon chopped chives
1 tablespoon tomato sauce
1 teaspoon sugar
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon olive oil
Salt and freshly ground pepper
1 knob of butter
1 shallot-chopped fine
½ clove garlic-chopped fine
120g girolle mushrooms
To Finish
Squeeze fresh lemon
Mixed leaves
1) Heat the olive oil in a non stick pan and seal the fish, skin side
down until golden. Turn the fish and continue cooking until it
oozes milky fluids.
2) Mix together the carrot, courgette, chives, tomato sauce, sugar,
Worcestershire sauce, olive oil and season with salt and pepper.
3) In a small frying pan add the knob of butter and sweat off the
shallot and garlic until softened. Add the girolles and stir gently.
Cook until the liquids have evaporated and the mushrooms are
cooked through. Season
5) When ready to serve place the vegetable mixture in a ring on
the plate, a pile of salad, place the fish on top and finally top with
the girolle mushrooms and a squeeze of fresh lemon.
