Now in its fifth year, the Sunshine Music
Festival has proved a January destination
for music lovers in Boca Raton and all points
north and south.
As always the show was anchored by the
Tedeschi Trucks Band, featuring singer guitarist-composer
Susan Tedeschi and slide
guitarist extraordinaire Derek Trucks. Capping
the Tedeschi Trucks finale set was a
guest appearance by Dave Mason, who had
thrilled earlier with his razor-sharp guitar
licks and his still-youthful singing voice. Everyone
sang along on Mason’s best-known
song, “Feelin’ All Right.”
After a noon opening set with Greyhounds,
North Mississippi All-Stars got things moving
with a blues-heavy set. The group is just
a trio, but all three sing. Brothers Luther
(guitar) and Cody Dickinson (drums) anchor
the group with the outstanding addition of
Danielle Nicole Schnebeler on vocals and
left-handed bass.
“It’s nice to be anywhere,” declared veteran
singer-songwriter guitarist Dave Mason,
late of Traffic and sideman to the stars (he
was best friends with Jimi Hendrix) before
embarking on a solo career. Mason performed
his greatest hits, including “We Just
Disagree,” and a tribute to Hendrix with “All
Along the Watchtower.”
Fans of the Grateful Dead got to dance
freeform with Joe Russo’s Almost Dead.
One of the biggest treats was a set with
Mavis Staples of the famed Staples Singers.
After singing “Respect Yourself,” Mavis,
77 and still going strong, performed a song
written by her father; “I Won’t Turn Around.”
Bruce Hornsby had a grand piano on
stage, but he often gave up the spotlight to
his skilled sidemen, and he even played a
little dulcimer.
Sunshine Music Festival has become so
popular it becomes filled to capacity. Producers
Live Nation added increased security
barriers and fences to keep things under
control. No doubt there will be a sixth
edition next year. It is advisable to book
tickets early.
