These events have been attended by
everyone from high-school and college
groups, to regular citizens to recovering
addicts. Greg Goyins wants the events to
give people the hope and strength they
need to overcome life’s setbacks, just
like he has.
Goyins’ life spun out of control after he
lost four close friends in the September
11th terrorist attacks. Addiction destroyed
his successful career on Wall Street and
pushed him south to Florida in search of
escape. “I knew what I was doing was not
good. I don’t think anyone wants to be an
addict when they grow up,” he said.
Then one day, Greg woke up, and decided
to change his life. He enrolled in a rehab
program, where he not only got clean, but
discovered his twin passions in life, filmmaking,
and helping others work their
way back from the depths of addiction.
That led Goyins back to college where
he studied film, and into directing. Greg
soon realized that the storytelling in filmmaking
has a powerful therapeutic effect
on addiction recovery. Back in Delray
Beach, Goyins founded an addiction-recovery
center called Epiphany with business
partner Mike Nussbaum. Epiphany
uses groundbreaking therapies to help
those who haven’t achieved full recovery
in other programs. One of those therapies,
Narrative Filmmaking, was developed
by Goyins in conjunction with Drs. Ruoxi
Chen and Jason Austin from the University
of Louisiana Monroe.
As Epiphany continued to grow, Goyins
could see that—not surprisingly—many
Lillo Brancato
South Florida residents were less than
comfortable with the growing number of
recovering addicts in their midst. And so,
InCite Talks was born.
“Delray Beach claims the moniker of the
recovery capital of the world. Every 1 in 5
Americans are dealing with addictions to
drugs or alcohol. We want InCite speakers
to bridge the two communities, the addiction
recovery community together with
the community at large,” said the founder.
“It’s rewarding when a young man or
woman goes home for Christmas and you
get a thank-you card from their family saying
that you saved their child’s life,” said
Greg. “My hope from InCite Talks is that it
will inspire people to understand that everybody
goes through things. Life shows
up and has an odd way of doing that.”
Looking back on his lowest point in life
some 10 years ago, Greg says he wouldn’t
trade his hardships.
“I wouldn’t change one second of my
entire journey. If I did, I don’t know if I
would be in the same place emotionally
or spiritually. I am able to help people stay
clean and sober and in turn, I stay clean
and sober,” said Greg.
Whether you are struggling with addiction,
putting food on the table, rocky relationships
or any daily life challenges, one of
the speakers of InCite Talks can inspire you
to keep moving forward.
Inky Johnson.
One hit took away
his football career,
but gave his life
a purpose.
As a cornerback for the Tennessee
Vols, Inky Johnson was eight games
away from a promising NFL future,
when a seemingly routine tackle
almost ended his life. It cost him his
arm and his career, but it didn’t put out
his fire. Inky is infectious. Come hear
his story, and leave ready to be better
and do better.
Everyone has challenges to overcome.
The Incite Speaker Series is a free
community service that hopes to
inspire, and make us all stronger.
