Ag Bytes Federal Reserve economist to speak in DeWitt in March Ohnward Financial Services and its community banking partners will host the 2017 Economic Summit on Monday, March 27, at Tycoga Winery, Highway 61 at 195th Street in DeWitt. William Strauss, a senior economist and economic adviser at the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago, will be the William Strauss featured speaker. Strauss, who joined the Federal Reserve in 1982, analyzes the performance of both the Midwest economy and the manufacturing sector. He has been interviewed on many television and radio shows and quoted in major business magazines and newspapers. He also provides testimony concerning manufacturing issues to the U.S. Senate. Kohl to address farmers in March at TYCOGA Maquoketa State Bank will host agriculture economist Dr. David Kohl at 10 a.m Tuesday, March 28, at Tycoga Winery. The topic of his presentation will be “Agriculture at the Crossroads.” “Dr. Kohl will be looking at financial aspects from a producer standpoint,” said Joel Lasack, vice president Dr. David Kohl of agriculture loans for MSB. Kohl has had years of experience in academic research and in working with commercial banks, ag lenders and producers throughout the world. His personal involvement with agriculture and interaction with key industry players give him a unique perspective into the future trends of the agriculture industry and the economy. He was professor of agricultural finance and small business management and entrepreneurship in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at Virginia Tech. He is currently president of AgriVisions LLC, a knowledge-based consulting business that serves agricultural organizations worldwide. He also is a business coach and part owner of Homestead Creamery, a value-added dairy business in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Applications are available on the department’s website at www.IowaAgriculture.gov by clicking on the Century Farm or Heritage Farm link under “Hot Topics.” Applications also may be requested from Becky Lorenz, coordinator of the Century and Heritage Farm Program, via phone at 515-281-3645, email at Becky. Farm families seeking to qualify for the Century or Heritage Farms Program must submit an application to the department no later than June 1. The Century Farm program was started in 1976 as part of the Nation’s Bicentennial Celebration. More than 19,000 farms across the state have received this recognition. The Heritage Farm program was started in 2006, on the 30th anniversary of the Century Farm program, and more than 900 farms have been recognized. Last year 320 Century Farms and 103 Heritage Farms were recognized. Ag partnerships continue to demonstrate water quality momentum The Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) is partnering with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) to offer additional cost share dollars to pig farmers installing new nutrient loss reduction technologies. Through this program, IPPA will provide up to $25,000 throughout the next year to offset up to 50 percent of costs for pig farmers to install saturated buffers or bioreactors on their farmland. Sites will be selected based on greatest opportunity for nitrate reduction and be geographically dispersed throughout the state to aid in education and demonstration opportunities. “Bioreactors and saturated buffers are new practices that have been developed to address water quality, so this $25,000 investment will help us install them at sites across the state so we can continue to demonstrate to farmers how they may be able fit on their farm,” Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey said. Participating producers will be asked to share information and experiences with other farmers through IPPA and IDALS programs. Pig farmers interested in the program can submit basic farm information for project consideration at www.surveygizmo.com/ s3/3108271/IDALS-EOF-Funding-Application.
