In my research, I looked through several old cookbooks at The Jackson County Historical Museum, and the magazine “Cook’s Country” has been very helpful. I tried to pick recipes that were somewhat difficult and not something I would ordinarily make. But there may be one or two of my favorites in there, too. Every recipe I chose has been written down exactly, and the original baker noted on the back of the card. I want to remember and give credit to those who have brought these recipes to life before me. Writing the recipes down – in my own handwriting – helped me to better remember the ingredient list, and to break it down, accurately stepby-step, so I am able to understand it later. So far, my recipe book is all desserts. My persistent sweet tooth has finally found a useful purpose. I have started my own recipe collection and am going to continue to learn more about baking. By taking the advice of the excellent bakers around me and keeping the wonderful memories of my childhood in the front of my mind, I think that I can finally begin to understand what it means to be a baker and really enjoy what I bake. And if I am enjoying what I am doing, the final result should be successful. Baking is a skill that can bring enjoyment and love for an entire lifetime.
