That was the phrase conservationist Lori Schnoor used last fall to introduce a rainfall simulator demonstration that would show how soil management impacts soil health. It was Oct. 18, and some 35 women were gathered in the picnic area behind the Hurstville Interpretive Center in Maquoketa to learn more about how their farming practices could help or hinder productivity and conservation. The demonstration was my introduction to the fascinating world of life underground – the earthworms, nematodes, root systems, ants, fungi and more – that I’ve been tromping over with little awareness my whole life. It was at that meeting, which was sponsored by the local Women, Land and Legacy Chapter, that my husband and I began to talk about making soil health the cover story for the spring issue of the Eastern Iowa Farmer. Nancy Mayfield Eastern Iowa Farmer As I’ve written before, I’m a city girl by birth, so my two and a half years of living in eastern Iowa and working on this magazine have been a wonderful, fascinating education. The more I learn, the more I see there is to learn, and the more excited I become about sharing what’s happening in agriculture right here. And the rainfall simulator caught my attention. The interactive mobile education display shows, on a small scale, the impacts of rainfall and runoff on conservation and land management practices.
