their needs, growing corn, hay, wheat and
oats back then.
The couple learned one of their most
important life lessons from Gene’s father
on his deathbed more than 40 years ago.
Gene said his father died from liver
problems – problems the doctor said
were likely caused from exposure to
manmade chemicals in a day when few
safety precautions were used.
“That was it right then, by golly,”
he said.
From then on, the couple has
grown everything in an organic way
– free from pesticides and herbicides.
“You know what’s in your food
then,” Gene said.
The big move
In September 1992, the Gerardys
moved from the family farm
to a sizable property south of
Bellevue. It offers a great view of
the Mississippi River as well as plenty of
room for Gene, 84, and Joan, 81, to grow
their own fruits and vegetables.
In the summer and fall, their backyard
bursts with potatoes, beets, peppers, to-
ma-
toes, radishes,
carrots, onions, gourds and grapes.
