Message from the Publisher Many fields now taking advantage of technology Embracing technology is something that seems to come easy to the farming community here in eastern Iowa. The more our staff talks with area farmers (you, that is), the more it becomes obvious just how technologically savvy today’s growers have to be to compete in the global market. We have interviewed people who help to engineer hybrid seeds. We have met those who have found new ways to manufacture feed bunks that reduce bacteria growth and improve the health of cattle. Others who have appeared in this magazine are experts at testing soil and determining exactly what it needs to grow the best crop possible. And then there are the farmers themselves, who have to understand all of it so that they can apply all this technology and know-how in a way that allows them to survive in a tough environment. Trevis Mayfield President Sycamore Media Corp. For that, we offer a tip of the hat. We are trying to follow your example, too. While there is no replacement for the feel of a magazine in one’s hand, we have decided to follow your lead and take a baby step toward embracing new technologies. Well, maybe not new technologies, exactly, but technologies we hadn’t adopted until now. For the first time, beginning with this issue of The Eastern Iowa Farmer, we are offering a digital version that can be read via computer, tablet or smartphone. The platform is what is known as a “PDF reader,” which means it will look almost exactly the same as it does in its print form, except the image will be composed of electronic pixels instead of paper and ink. Our goal with this new technology is to give you an additional way to enjoy our work. As you have probably already noticed from the cover of the magazine in your hands, this The Eastern Iowa Farmer homepage offers readers a chance to submit information as well as view the magazine with a PDF reader. issue is dedicated to exploring the best soil-management practices in eastern Iowa. That’s not to mention a wide range of other stories that celebrate our farming community. We have met a lot of great people while working on this issue, and we have enjoyed every minute of it. As always, we hope you find it entertaining, folksy, and at least a little bit educational. And thanks to our new digital platform, it should be easy for you to let us know what you think. If you direct your electronic device to eifarmer.com, you will find not only the digital version of this magazine, but also an easy way to let us know what you think. Just click and type. Lastly, as always, I’d like to thank all the advertisers who helped to make this magazine possible. Thank you so much, and we hope you enjoy this issue. Sincerely, Trevis Mayfield, Sycamore Media president 10 Eastern Iowa Farmer | spring 2017
