APRIL 22 MARCH FOR SCIENCE

The March for Science today announced 

its first round of partner organizations, 

including many leading scientific, academic, 

and educational institutions, among 

them, Earth Day Network (EDN), which 

will co-organize the national March for 

Science rally and teach-in in Washington, 

D.C. on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22. 

In just the last month since the concept of 

a March for Science went viral online, 287 

satellite marches across the globe have been 

organized with more coming online every 

day, and more than 50,000 volunteers have 

responded to offer assistance. 

Major partners include the American 

Association for the Advancement of Science, 

the world’s largest general scientific 

organization and a leading publisher of 

cutting-edge research through its Science 

family of journals; Sigma Xi, the first scientific 

organization to partner with the 

march, and one of the oldest and largest 

international scientific research honor 

societies in the world; the Entomological 

Society of America, the largest organization 

in the world serving the professional 

and scientific needs of entomologists 

and individuals in related disciplines; 

NextGen Climate America, a non-partisan, 

non-profit organization dedicated to 

advancing policies to prevent climate disaster, 

promoting prosperity, and protecting 

fundamental rights for every American; 

and ScienceDebate.org, which organized 

a blue-ribbon coalition of 56 leading U.S. 

non-partisan organizations, representing 

more than 10 million scientists and engineers, 

to solicit responses to science-related 

questions from presidential candidates. 

Other partners include the American 

Anthropological Association, the American 

Association of University Professors, the 

American Geophysical Union, the Center 

for Biological Diversity, the Consortium of 

Social Science Associations, the International 

Federation of Professional and Technical 

Engineers AFL-CIO, the New York 

Academy of Sciences, Research!America, 

the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/ 

Hispanics and Native Americans in Science, 

and the Union of Concerned Scientists.

of science-based organizations joining the 

March for Science movement speaks to the 

importance of the organization’s mission and 

the need for scientists across disciplines to 

stand up for the vital public service role science 

plays in society and policy-making. 

“This started as an idea, but it’s rapidly 

actualizing into a global movement,” said 

Valorie Aquino, one of the march’s three 

national co-chairs and an anthropology PhD 

candidate at the University of New Mexico. 

“Scientific integrity serves everyone, and we 

need to speak out for science together. We’re 

thrilled and inspired that our message is resonating 

with so many organizations and so 

many people who have been advancing and 

defending science for years.” 

The march organizers noted how fortuitous 

it is to be able to partner with the Earth Day 

Network for the Washington, D.C. rally and 

march, especially given the history of Earth 

Day, with its emphasis on using teach-ins 

to help people learn more about our world. 

Earth Day Network’s organizers say pairing 

with the March for the Science was a natural 

fit. 

“Earth Day is a great day to talk about science,” 

said Kathleen Rogers, EDN’s president. 

“Science informs policies that protect 

the environment and scientific and technological 

advances help create green jobs 

and a green economy, all things we need 

to effectively respond to the risks scientists 

have identified for our planet. This year’s 

global Earth Day theme is climate and envi-

speaks directly to our mission. In addition 

to the co-hosted March for Science rally on 

the National Mall, Earth Day 2017 will see

March organizers also launched a new social 

media campaign that highlights how scientists 

serve their communities. #ScienceServes 

showcases the many ways science saves lives, 

protects communities and advances the public 

interest. Scientists perform critical civic 

duties and the march will be an opportunity 

to make their valuable public service role 

more visible. 

“Scientists aren’t just working in labs wearing 

white coats,” said Caroline Weinberg, MD, 

MPH a health educator and science writer 

and march co-chair. “They are testing our 

water, developing vaccines, and helping to 

keep our farms and fisheries productive. 

The March for Science unites scientists and 

people everywhere who love and appreciate 

science to stand together and ensure that 

we can all continue to enjoy all the benefits 

science gives us. As we’ve noted in our principles, 

that absolutely includes holding our 

leaders --— both in science and in politics 

--— accountable to the highest standards of 

honesty, fairness, and integrity.”

and policies that people who value science 

can get involved in, from the marches themselves 

to arranging visits with legislators to 

participating in local citizen science projects.

MODERNISM WEEK 

THE ART OF ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN IN PALM 

SPRINGS 

Works by Tom of Finland not previously 

viewed by the public, have been loaned to 

the Woodman/Shimko Gallery for exhibit. 

There are two displays, “The motorcycle 

Series”, consists of 11 drawings that are in 

sequence. The sequence involves a hitchhiker 

being picked up by a biker. They 

become involved in an erotic encounter 

which is joined in the last few frames in a 

three-way encounter with another individual. 

This series had been commissioned by 

the original owner and had been shown before 

in Europe. The other series is 3 drawings 

showing encounters by hot uniformed 

military guys. 

A film of Tom of Finland’s life has been 

produced in Finland and is scheduled to be 

released this year. Take advantage of the 

opportunity to view these original works at 

the Woodman/Shimko Gallery located at

All of these drawings show the original 

unique ability of Touko Laaksomen or Tom 

of Finland who has become an icon of gay 

erotic art posthumously. An article on 

Tom’s biography was featured in the Daily 

Guide last August. His drawings have 

been shown in famous galleries world wide 

including the MoMa, The Art Institute of 

Chicago, LACMA, as well as other smaller 

galleries and museums. A quote from Tom 

of Finland regarding his own legacy, he 

said, “I know my dirty 

little drawings are never going to hang in 

the main salons of the Louvre. but it would 

be nice if ..... our world learns to accept all 

the different ways of loving, Then maybe 

I could have a place in one of the smaller 

side rooms. 

Tom of Finland has not made it to the 

Louvre yet, however his work is known 

throughout the world and his message of 

acceptance of difference has never been 

needed to be acknowledged more than now.

It’s a small world. And I don’t mean the 

Ride at the happiest place on earth. We 

were purposely meant to meet every person 

that graces our lives, no matter how 

small of a role. Some are uncredited on the 

screen, and probably forgotten, but also 

important. Like when you go through a 

time machine and if you crush one little 

fly, it will change the way we evolve in the 

future. And yes I know how foolish 

it is to say that. 

People have their purpose, but 

to keep bumping into the same 

person multiple times could be 

the universe saying to douche 

because you are getting lucky 

tonight. I’ve met a person who 

created the next chapter and then 

in comes the next chapter. Like a 

great novel or a trashy paperback, 

it’s good reading material for the 

shitter. 

I love when that mysterious 

stranger or costar appears for 

their 15 minutes or more. Is this 

a lifelong friends or souls mate 

or even a bed buddy? Will they 

make a guest appearance in ten 

years or so, or just never leave? 

It’s constantly bumping into the 

same person that I feel is a wonderful 

gift from the universe. 

Pending of course if they want to 

keep seeing said person. Sometimes 

a short amount of time is 

exactly the right amount of time. The generous 

universe is always being considerate. 

So, enjoy life’s gifts. They are very thoughtful!

THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis 

Woke up this morning in Washington 

DC to attend the National League 

of Cities Congressional City Conference. 

This annual meeting historically 

brought Cabinet secretaries, administration 

officials and even the President, 

Vice President and First Lady - this 

year, no one from Trumpville. 

What we are getting is a scary update 

on what is planning on the budget and 

potential legislation. In order to accomplish 

the President’s $54 billion increase 

in defense he is recommending drastic 

cuts in domestic spending. Some of the 

cuts include elimination of Community 

Development Block Grants, funding to 

the Centers for Disease Control, Climate 

Action programs, FEMA disaster 

funds and many more! 

Any one of these cuts can hurt our local 

cities. All together they will be disastrous. 

As one example CDBG funds 

allow Cathedral City to support homeless 

programs, senior citizen activities, 

sewer hook up for lower income residents 

and the like. We do all that with 

a block grant of about $500,000. We 

will have to eliminate those programs 

without these monies. 

Many of the other council members 

here at the conference are speaking 

about concerns of losing mental health 

money. Apparently the Presidents budget 

also drastically changes Medicaid 

and will all but eliminate mental health 

funds. Wow I remember Ronald Reagan 

as Governor who eliminated mental 

health funds and we ended up with 

huge homelessness issues. Deja Vu?
