• The 1959 NCAA Championship win against<br />
Michigan State played at the RPI Fieldhouse in<br />
Troy, N.Y., became the � rst national hockey title<br />
for the Fighting Sioux. <strong>North</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong> was in the<br />
title game the year before, losing 6-2 to Denver<br />
in Minneapolis, Minn.<br />
• Bill Steenson, defenseman from Moose Jaw,<br />
Saskatchewan, was a captain on the 1959<br />
NCAA Championship team. Steenson was<br />
named an All-America player for the third time,<br />
1957, 1958 and 1959.<br />
• Steenson was also a NCAA All-Tournament<br />
<strong>North</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong> 4 ot<br />

named the 1959 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding<br />

Ontario, were named to the 1959 NCAA Tournament<br />
All-Tournament Team. Forward Joe<br />
Poole, Thief River Falls, Minn., and defenseman<br />
Ralph Lyndon, Winnipeg, Manitoba, were<br />
named to the second team.<br />
• The Western Collegiate Hockey Association<br />
did not select an All-WCHA team in 1958-59.<br />

• <strong>North</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong> had played Michigan State fi ve<br />
times during the 1958-59 season with UND<br />
holding the edge, 3-2-0.<br />
• The fi nal three games <strong>of</strong> the 1959 Championships<br />
were all decided by scores <strong>of</strong> 4-3 and two<br />
<strong>of</strong> the three games went to overtime.<br />
• UND head coach Bob May coached for just<br />
two years, 1957-59, and won a national championship<br />
and placed second. May had a coaching<br />
record <strong>of</strong> 44-17-2 (.714).<br />
