FEELING A DRAFT<br />

UND’s 2008-09 roster included 13 players<br />

who have been drafted by National Hockey<br />

League teams. The group included goalie Brad<br />

Eidsness (Bu� alo), defensemen Joe Finley<br />

(Washington), Derrick LaPoint (Florida), Corey<br />

Fienhage (Bu� alo) and Ben Blood (Ottawa)<br />

and forwards Andrew Kozek (Atlanta),<br />

Jason Gregoire (New York Islanders), David<br />

Toews (New York Islanders), Matt Watkins<br />

(Dallas), Matt Frattin (Toronto), Brad Malone<br />

(Colorado), Brett Hextall (Phoenix) and Chris<br />

VandeVelde (Edmonton).<br />

A total <strong>of</strong> 21 Fighting Sioux have been drafted<br />

during the tenure <strong>of</strong> � fth-year head coach<br />

Dave Hakstol, including � rst-rounders Finley<br />

(2005), <strong>Brian</strong> Lee (Ottawa, 2005) and T.J. Oshie<br />

(2005) and Jonathan Toews (Chicago, 2006).<br />

ON THEIR WAY<br />

Three members <strong>of</strong> UND’s 2009 senior class<br />

signed pr<strong>of</strong>essional contracts following the<br />

season, and all three made their pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

debuts in the American Hockey League by the<br />

end <strong>of</strong> the year.<br />

Senior D Joe Finley (Edina, Minn.) signed with<br />

the Washington Capitals, who drafted Finley in<br />

the � rst round (27th overall) <strong>of</strong> the 2005 NHL<br />

Entry Draft. Finley reported to the Capitals’ AHL<br />

a� liate in Hershey (Penn.) and made his pro<br />

debut with the Bears on April 12.<br />

Senior F Ryan Duncan (Calgary, Alberta), an<br />

undrafted free agent, signed an amateur tryout<br />

agreement with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers,<br />

the AHL a� liate <strong>of</strong> the New York Islanders.<br />

Duncan appeared in two regular season games.<br />

Senior F Andrew Kozek (Sicamous, British<br />

Columbia), a second-round draft pick (53rd<br />

overall) <strong>of</strong> the Atlanta Thrashers in 2005, inked<br />

an amateur tryout agreement with the AHL’s<br />

Chicago Wolves. Kozek appeared in � ve games<br />

with the Wolves and scored two goals in his<br />

third pr<strong>of</strong>essional game.<br />

During the o� season, three more graduated<br />

seniors inked pr<strong>of</strong>essional contracts.<br />

Defenseman Zach Jones (Lisle, Ill.) signed with<br />

the South Carolina Stingrays <strong>of</strong> the East Coast<br />

Hockey League.<br />

Forward Ryan Martens (Selkirk, Manitoba)<br />

signed a deal to play in Germany with EHC<br />

Dormund.<br />

Defenseman Brad Miller (Alpharetta, Ga.)<br />

signed a two-way AHL-ECHL contract to play<br />

with Dallas’ new AHL a� liate in Austin, Texas.<br />

The ECHL a� liate <strong>of</strong> the Stars is the Idaho<br />

Steelheads.<br />

Forward Matt Watkins (Aylesbury,<br />

Saskatchewan), a � fth-round draft pick <strong>of</strong><br />

Dallas in 2005, became a free agent during the<br />

summer and had not yet signed a contract as<br />

<strong>of</strong> press time.<br />

Brad Miller, who scored a career-high 35 points<br />

as a senior after switching from forward to defense,<br />

is the only Georgia native ever to play<br />

hockey at UND.<br />
