UND put its second championship in
the Fighting Sioux record book.
• Avenging the loss to Denver in the title game
in 1958, the Soux defeated the Pioneers in the
1963 Championship by a 6-5 score.
• UND had three fi rst team All-Americans: defenseman
Don Ross, Roseau, Minn., forward Al
McLean, New Westminster, B.C., and forward
Dave Merri� eld, Thunder Bay, Ont. It would

• McLean was named the NCAA Tournament
Most Outstanding Player.
• On the all-tournament team were George
Goodacre, Red Deer, Alberta., Ross, McLean,
Merri� eld, and Don Stokaluk, F, Thunder Bay,
Ontario.
• Ross, Merrifi eld, McLean, and Joe Lech, Glen
Bain, Saskatchewan, were named All-WCHA.

only NCAA title in 1963. Thorndycraft � nished
his coaching career at UND with a 71-65-8
