The 2009-10 season marks the sixth year for UND’s National Alumni
Hockey Committee – created for the purpose of building and
maintaining the strong tradition of excellence in the Fighting
Sioux hockey program.
The committee was established within the University of North Dakota
Foundation to improve the communication, involvement and support
of former Fighting Sioux hockey players and friends.
The intention of the National Alumni Hockey Committee is to develop
a system of networking with as many letterwinners as possible that will
encourage former UND teammates and fellow letterwinners to become
more involved with UND hockey and to participate in alumni events.
The group also intends to set up a series of UND “Alumni Ambassadors”
to assist with the networking program, and to arrange hockey letterwinner
events around the country and team reunions during Hockey
Hall of Fame weekend.
Je� Bowen
The committee was formed by Je� Bowen, former
development o� cer for the UND Foundation.
Bowen played on UND’s 1987 national championship
team and later was an assistant coach for the
2000 NCAA national championship UND Fighting
Sioux hockey team.
An executive committee and series of sub-committees
will complete the actual work of the committee.
The chairman of the UND National Alumni Hockey
Committee is Erwin W. Martens, a winger for the
Sioux on their 1980 national championship team.
Martens, a native of Cartwright, Manitoba, was an
alternate captain on that team. He received degrees
from UND in 1983 and 1985. A resident of
Sudbury, Mass., he currently is the Chief Risk O� -
cer for TIAA-Cref, one of the largest � nancial service
providers in the world.
Co-chairs of the committee are Je� Bowen, Paul
Chadwick and Tarek Howard.

Also on the executive committee are UND head coach Dave Hakstol, associate
head coach Cary Eades and assistant coach Dane Jackson.
In addition to the executive committee, individual sub-committees
have been suggested. Possibilities include local sub-committees in
Grand Forks and other areas of the country with a strong Sioux hockey
following and an at-large sub-committee.
The role of the sub-committees would be to plan get-togethers in local
areas and provide input and feedback to the executive committee.
Mission and vision
Martens said, “Our mission is to improve the communication, involvement
and support of the former Fighting Sioux hockey players and
friends.”
Bowen added, “It is our vision that the UND National Alumni Hockey
Committee be recognized as one of the best in the country.”
Bowen said several factors will allow this to happen:
• The rich tradition and history of the Fighting Sioux hockey program.
• The reputation and recognition of the program both nationally
and internationally.
• The loyal following and strong tradition of the program that will
provide a solid foundation for future success.
• The program’s solid and well-respected coaching sta� , an excellent
facility and the continued recruitment of quality players.
Many activities are being planned by the National Alumni Hockey Committee,
to include:
• Meeting at Hockey Hall of Fame weekends each fall for an update
on the UND Fighting Sioux Hockey team and to discuss ideas for
the future.
• Arranging hockey letterwinner events around the country, such as
pre-game socials and golf events.
• Setting up a system whereby a UND “Alumni Ambassador” can assist
hockey letterwinners and current players with career opportunities
and networking.
• Assisting the UND Alumni Association with team reunions, as well
as the Hall of Fame nomination and induction process.
Other plans of the UND National Alumni Hockey Committee include
listing information about activities of the committee on the UND alumni
website, with links to the athletic department website, and setting
up an e-mail list of letterwinners and possibly even a place to post resumes.
