FORMER SIOUX GREAT AND NHL VETERAN DIXON WARD<br />

INDUCTED INTO UND ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME<br />

Former forward Dixon Ward, the only<br />

player in the storied history <strong>of</strong> Fighting<br />

Sioux hockey with 100 goals and 100<br />

assists, was one <strong>of</strong> four inductees into UND’s<br />

Letterwinners Athletics Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame in 2009.<br />

Ward and the entire Class<br />

<strong>of</strong> 2009 was inducted into<br />

the UND Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame on<br />

Oct. 31 at the 35th annual<br />

induction ceremonies.<br />

A native <strong>of</strong> Leduc, Alberta,<br />

Ward graduated<br />

as the program’s all-time<br />

leader in career games<br />

played (since broken)<br />

and amassed 110 goals<br />

and 109 assists for 219 points in 163 career<br />

games.<br />

When he graduated following the 1991-92<br />

season, only one other player in school history<br />

had scored more career goals and only<br />

one other had scored more career points.<br />

Despite having graduated nearly two decades<br />

ago, Ward remains ranked second all-time at<br />

UND in goals and power-play goals (40) and is<br />

ranked fourth in points.<br />

Ward was named to the All-Western Collegiate<br />

Hockey Association second team as a junior<br />

and senior and was a three-time member<br />

<strong>of</strong> the All-WCHA Academic team.<br />

A seventh-round draft pick (128th overall) <strong>of</strong><br />

the Vancouver Canucks in 1989, Ward went<br />

on to enjoy a 10-year National Hockey League<br />

career with Vancouver, Los Angeles, Toronto,<br />

Bu� alo, Boston and the New York Rangers,<br />

reaching the Stanley Cup Finals in 1999 with<br />

Bu� alo.<br />

Ward retired from the NHL having scored<br />

224 points (95 goals, 129 assists) in 537 career<br />

games. His best individual season came<br />

during his rookie year <strong>of</strong> 1992-93, when he<br />

scored 22 goals and 30 assists in 70 games for<br />

Vancouver.<br />

Athletics Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame Class <strong>of</strong> 2009 include<br />

Shannon Burnell (Football, 1990-93), Mikki<br />

Cochrane (S<strong>of</strong>tball, 1993-95), Janine Etchepare<br />

(Swimming, 1988-91) and the 1993 Sioux<br />

football team.<br />

Longtime boosters Pete and Eunice Kuhn received<br />

the Honorary Letterwinners Award.<br />

TONY COUTURE RECEIVES<br />

TOM CLIFFORD AWARD<br />

Little Falls (Minn.) High School boys hockey<br />

coach Tony Couture received the prestigious<br />

Tom Cli� ord Award and the 35th annual UND<br />

Letterwinners Athletics Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame cermony<br />

in Grand Forks on Oct. 31, 2009.<br />

The Tom Cli� ord Award was established to<br />

honor former UND President Thomas J. Clifford<br />

and his long-time support <strong>of</strong> UND athletics.<br />

The award recognizes UND alumni who<br />

serve as athletic coaches at the high school<br />

or college level and have been notably successful<br />

in their sport the year preceding the<br />

award.<br />

Couture recently completed his 16th year as<br />

head coach at Little Falls and in 2008-09 he<br />

led the Flyers to a 30-1 record and a thirdplace<br />

� nish at the state tournament.<br />

Couture has guided the program to the state<br />

tournament in each <strong>of</strong> the last � ve seasons<br />

and a 102-15-2 record over the last four.<br />

Couture, a goalie at UND from 1988-91, lettered<br />

in each <strong>of</strong> his three seasons and appeared<br />

in 59 career games.<br />

Originally from International Falls, Minn.,<br />

Couture went 34-16-3 at UND and his lifetime<br />

winning percentage <strong>of</strong> .670 ranks seventh alltime<br />

in Sioux hockey history.<br />
