Warring International Piano Competition 

The 2017 Senior Competition (Ages 

18 - 30) will take place March 26 – April 2, 

2017. 

All rounds of the competition are open 

to the public. All preliminary rounds and 

master classes are free at The Indian Wells 

Theatre in Palm Desert The Concerto Finals 

are on Sunday, April 2, 2017 at 2 PM with 

full orchestra. This is a ticketed event at the 

McCallum Theater in Palm Desert 

March 24 & 25 Annie the Musical… Presented 

through special arrangements with 

Music Theater International (MTI) At the 

Palm Springs High school’s historic auditorium, 

the storied E. Stewart Williams-designed 

structure has undergone a multi-million-dollar 

renovation that has reinvigorated and 

retooled this beloved Valley film, concert, 

and theatrical venue. The result is a state-ofthe-art 

performance destination for both the 

District’s students and Valley culture-lovers. 

“Annie” will be performed at 2 p.m. March 24 

and 25 at the Richards Center for the Arts.

SPECTRUM INDIAN WELLS ART SHOW 

HIGHLIGHTS PART 1 

The Spectrum Indian Wells Art Show was 

held at the Renaissance Indian Wells Resort 

from March 16 -19. The show was not as 

large as last year but featured a number of 

prominent artists. Jay Johansen, one of the 

artists featured, is a local artist living part of 

the year in the Palm Springs area.

Jay has been creating art for at least the past 

30 years. His early inspiration came from 

watching his father, Melvin Johansen create 

sculptures while he was curator at the now 

Oakland Museum of California. Jay has 

worked primarily as a painter including 

subjects from celebrities, street people, 

matadors, matadoras, ballerinas, and hula 

dancers among others. Much of his work 

has been meticulously detailed in classical 

oil painting style. When asked about biographical 

information, he gave me a beautifully 

appointed book recently published 

on his work titled, “Encounter The Human 

Spirit”, published through Blub, Fine Art 

Impressions, Palm Springs, California. 

His recent work, exhibited at the Indian 

Wells show, has been done mostly in acrylic 

with a more expressive approach to portraiture 

and figure work. He explained that he 

is beginning a new direction in his art using 

acrylic, providing him a more spontaneous 

medium to portray the humane figure. 

Photos included show one of his works of 

matadors in the classical style, a watercolor 

of a street person, and one of his more 

recent portraits in acrylic. Mr. Johansen’s 

work is representative of one of the great 

artists of our time that we have the privilege 

of having live here part of the year, to enhance 

our social and creative environment.

to start. Chinese food, a Burger with the 

works, Fish &Chips, Chocolate. Now I am 

hungry. I’ll be right back. 

Well. I’m back. There was nothing in my 

fridge, so I’m glad the world didn’t end. 

I wanted to go out with a bang! No pun 

intended, but it works in this situation. 

Nothing like a good pun. Life would 

be dull without puns. Now it’s the 

last day of the world. I bet a large 

mount of the male population would 

pick sex as a last rite and passage. 

Well, because, men are pigs. Gay or 

Straight, men are pigs. They admit it, 

but deny it at the say time. 

There are a lot of hypocrisies right 

now. Way before the election even 

took place. It’s a fault in people I 

don’t like. There are a lot of faults in 

people. I’m not saying I’m perfect 

and we need that negative attribute 

to even things out, but I am seeing 

way more negative than positive. I 

see a lot of lip action but not enough 

motion to make it happen. 

Actions speak louder than words. 

You’ve heard the expression, but do 

you take action? Sometimes? Right? 

Like I said, we can be nonchalantly 

strolling thru going thru the 

motions. Actions do speak louder, 

but words are also very important.

THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis 

Oh my, where does one start? Such a week. The President 

issues a new travel ban, the courts block it. He 

welcomes the Chancellor of Germany and then insults 

her, his Secretary of State bans all media on his trip to 

Asia except one conservative outlet and then all but 

threatens war with North Korea. Does anyone else 

think this “leader of the free world” is bat-shit crazy? 

He also released his budget plans to Congress. A 40+% 

percent increase to defense (ok, normal Republican 

intent) but huge cuts to the Labor Department, Environmental 

Protection Agency and the State Department. 

The wholesale elimination of the National 

Endowment for the Arts and the Corporation for 

Public Broadcasting (PBS). I can just now envision Big 

Bird and Ms. Piggy protesting at the gates to the White 

House. He is also proposing eliminating Community 

Development Block Grants, CDBG. This program, 

like the EPA was first established under Republican, 

Richard Nixon. Valley cities, alone, get upwards of 

$400,000 from CDBG to help fund projects designed to 

help low-income residents. Cathedral City uses their 

portion to fund a homeless shelter and assist poorer 

residents with paying their hookup fees for the sewer 

system. 

Also, this week alone the Secret Service caught two 

intruders on the White House grounds. Of course, 

Mr. Trump wasn’t there – he was at the Southern White 

House at Maro – Lago. 

Did you also catch the announcement that since Mrs. 

Trump won’t move to the White House, we are spending 

$183,000,000 for her and her son’s security? The 

entire annual budget for the Endowment for the Arts is 

$148 million. Hmmmmm. 

I won’t even begin to get into the discussion on the 

elimination of the Affordable Care Act and the winding 

down of Medicaid or the millions of people that will 

lose health insurance. 

When will the “leaders” in Congress finally stand up 

and say enough. Will we really have four years of this 

incompetence and outright war on the poor and on 

cities? 

This week I spent three days in Sacramento meeting 

with legislators on both sides of the aisles. They all 

were concerned with how Trump policies would affect 

California. My final meeting was with Attorney General 

Becerra who spoke at length on our state’s fight over 

immigration and clean air/water issues with the federal 

government. Governor Brown is headed to Washington 

this week to meet with the California delegation 

to help plan strategy. We have much to be concerned 

about over the next months and years. 

Locally, congrats to the City of Palm Springs for adding 

immigration status to the nondiscrimination policies – 

joining Cathedral City in helping set guidelines for law 

enforcement and other municipal services. 

This week also brings LGBT Days to Cathedral City 

with Ultra Nate, Martha Wash and Leslie Jordan, along 

with the ever-popular bed race down Avenida Lalo 

Guerrero. On Friday, the Rainbow Flag will be raised at 

the Civic Center, marking the first time in the valley a 

city will have the Gay Pride flag up at City Hall. I hope 

to see everyone there.d
