SPECTRUM INDIAN WELLS ART SHOW
HIGHLIGHTS PART 1
The Spectrum Indian Wells Art Show was
held at the Renaissance Indian Wells Resort
from March 16 -19. The show was not as
large as last year but featured a number of
prominent artists. Jay Johansen, one of the
artists featured, is a local artist living part of
the year in the Palm Springs area.

Jay has been creating art for at least the past
30 years. His early inspiration came from
watching his father, Melvin Johansen create
sculptures while he was curator at the now
Oakland Museum of California. Jay has
worked primarily as a painter including
subjects from celebrities, street people,
matadors, matadoras, ballerinas, and hula
dancers among others. Much of his work
has been meticulously detailed in classical
oil painting style. When asked about biographical
information, he gave me a beautifully
appointed book recently published
on his work titled, “Encounter The Human
Spirit”, published through Blub, Fine Art
Impressions, Palm Springs, California.
His recent work, exhibited at the Indian
Wells show, has been done mostly in acrylic
with a more expressive approach to portraiture
and figure work. He explained that he
is beginning a new direction in his art using
acrylic, providing him a more spontaneous
medium to portray the humane figure.
Photos included show one of his works of
matadors in the classical style, a watercolor
of a street person, and one of his more
recent portraits in acrylic. Mr. Johansen’s
work is representative of one of the great
artists of our time that we have the privilege
of having live here part of the year, to enhance
our social and creative environment.
