Local resident Kath Sharp writes about our local ‘Hidden Gem’
namely the Crown Bowling Green at Cutgate which originates
from around 1931 and is situated on a private road at the top
of Upper Passmonds Grove. In fact what many of you won’t
know is that there is a gate giving access to the green is situated
behind the shops at Cutgate Precinct. A few of the members
there are keen gardeners resulting in the green looking
magnificent during the bowling season. If you would be
interested in becoming a member, details are included on page
65.
Councillors Pat Sullivan and Peter Winkler have written articles
this month with Pat covering the very important issue of taking
care of yours as well your children’s teeth. Peter writes about
The Norden Heritage Project which he has recently set up in order
to protect the heritage which makes Norden such a special place.
Enjoy this issue, keep it handy and until next month…..
Local Care from a Local Company
The team at Home Instead Senior Care in Rochdale is passionate
about providing care to its clients which not only improves the
quality of their lives but those of their families too. The company
specialises in providing care for older people in their own homes.
Commenting on the service, David Bradshaw said, “We are passionate
about providing the highest standard of person-centred care. Our ethos
is simple – treat others as we would wish to be treated ourselves. In
doing this we are improving our clients’ quality of life and helping them
to remain in their own homes, leading an independent life.”
Home Instead clients have a care plan tailored specifically to their own
needs and the service is extremely flexible and ranges from help a few
hours a day to 24 hour care. Services can include personal care such as
assistance with bathing, dressing and medications; home help covering
housework, shopping, meal preparation and household duties; and
companionship services that can involve everything from escorting clients
on visits or appointments to simple conversation and good company.
The company also provides a range of specialist services, which include
Alzheimer’s and dementia care, convalescence care and respite care.
Home Instead Caregivers complete a training programme designed by
national and international renowned dementia and Alzheimer's experts.
This means our Caregivers are provided with the latest in Alzheimer's
education and home care techniques, so clients are assured their loved
one is being cared for by a trusted professional.
The team at Home Instead knows that quality care cannot be delivered
in short, rushed visits so care calls are of a minimum 1 hour duration.
They also understand how important it is for clients to have the right
caregiver for their needs. Time is taken to
carefully match caregivers to clients so that they share common areas
of interest and can form an immediate bond.
Home Instead only employs the most caring, considerate and empathetic
caregivers – people to whom making a difference to the lives of others
is important. Caregivers are carefully selected, are CRB checked and
have to provide six references.
Home Instead Senior Care is committed to making a difference,
and regard it as a special privilege to look after people with love,
care and compassion - they take their responsibilities very
seriously indeed.
STREETWISE...
DELIVERED PERSONALLY AND WITH PRIDE
We have advertised with the local community
magazine Streetwise since it was first launched
and our advert appears in all four of their
magazines. In our opinion it’s simply the best
local magazine out there by far.
Both Kate and Becky go out of their way to ensure
the customer gets exactly what they want. They
are very approachable, helpful, and professional in
what they do, their level of service is excellent and
nothing is too much trouble.
We have had many calls as a result of advertising
in Streetwise and consequently this has kept us
very busy over the past few years, undertaking
many quality jobs. The magazine is distributed to
several areas within the borough of Rochdale with
20,000 magazines being delivered each month.
Streetwise is brilliant value for money.
Bamford Dental Practice has been advertising in
Streetwise Bamford/Norden since it was first
launched just over three years ago. We find the
magazine extremely useful as like many
businesses and services, it is vital that we keep in
touch with our patients and the local community.
Streetwise is a very friendly, informative, efficient
and low cost way of keeping in touch with our
patients to let them know what is going on. The
service has always been really easy use and the
distribution reaches thousands of people.
Despite the ever expanding market for internet
based advertising, there are still so many people
who simply just want to pick up a magazine and
find out what is going on in their local area.
We are grateful to Kate and Becky for their
continued support and more recently with their
help for our charity swim.
THE BENEFITS OF ADVERTISING IN STREETWISE…
We offer competitive rates and great value for money with discounts available for advertising in multiple magazines.
To get the most out of advertising with us, a design service is available so that you can promote your business in the best
possible and professional way.
Distribution is carried out each month by a local and knowledgeable delivery team. The magazines are distributed on time and
at the same time every month so you know exactly when to expect your copy through the letterbox.
A friendly, helpful personal service – just email or give either Kate or Becky a call for a no obligation quote.
Streetwise is the mouthpiece for local community groups and charities. Unlike other magazines with contain page after page of
adverts, each issue of Streetwise contains useful and relevant local information making it the handy guide for every household.
Over the years it has become the ONLY local community magazine.
With running costs of over £3m a year, Springhill
Hospice relies on the goodwill of local businesses
to help with their fundraising. The Team at
Streetwise has supported Springhill for a number
of years, offering free of charge publicity for
fundraising events and also the opportunity to
feed back to the community on the success of
those events.
Streetwise support Springhill Hospice with
quality, borough wide, free publicity which ensures
our events are advertised to as many people as
possible which helps not only to raise awareness
of the work of our doctors and nurses but also
helps to raise funds. We can’t thank Streetwise
enough for their invaluable and continued
support”
Lillie Winterboom
Community Fundraiser – Springhill Hospice
Kate and Becky at Streetwise have provided
unswerving support throughout our 18 months
successful campaign to save a local field from
developers, always making room for an article,
mentioning our group in their edition preview notes
and squeezing us in to their Stop Press. The
publication, quality and layout is always very
impressive and has given the group professional media
coverage helping our cause and credibility no end!
Many thanks to both ladies!
Hi Kate and Becky
Thought I'd let you know how well your magazine is
read. Today at the Cutgate meeting we had 4 new
walkers and all from reading the Bamford and
Norden Streetwise Magazine. Thank you so much.
Walking is the best exercise. It is free. It relieves
loneliness and depression, controls weight,
reduces cholesterol and blood pressure and
walking in a group adds to the social life of lonely
and recently bereaved people. It also introduces
people to the areas where they live who have no
idea of the beauty and scenery round the corner
from their home.
Barbara Jessop
Syke Walk and Talk Group
I can't recommend Kate and the team at Streetwise
highly enough. Norden Carnival is an annual event in our
local village - organised by just five people in our spare
time but aended by a few thousand. Through
promoting the event for free in the magazine in the
months running up to the event, the Commiee is able
to encourage residents to join in the street parade on
the day as well as finding people to run craft stalls etc.
The magazine is so much more than just local listings
and advertising as it includes a range of interesting
articles - which also means that our updates are read
too. We take the June front cover to advertise our event
each year and its a really cost effective way of
encouraging local residents to aend the event. Apart
from Facebook and Twier, the only other advertising we
do is in the local shops - and even that gets re-enforced
through the Streetwise magazines as they are available
to pick up in the local shops, cafes, restaurants and
libraries. We know we get many referrals from
Streetwise and we really appreciate their support - and
patience when we're late for a deadline! The coverage
after the event is also a really good way to thank
everyone for supporting us.
Whether you're thinking about advertising or just listing
an event, we guarantee that Streetwise will provide a
complete and professional service.
NEEVA (Norden Environmental and Economic Village Association)
Firstly, we would like to take this opportunity to offer our
gratitude for the work Peter Hampson provided during his
tenure as Chairman for NEEVA.
NEEVA was founded approximately 20 years ago during a period of
extensive sewer
replacement work. The
work on the main road
through the village was
supposed to take 6
months. It was nearly
18 months as the
planners had forgotten
there were tram tracks
buried under the road. There was no parking in the centre of the
village for months on end, the financial impact on many of the
businesses was crippling for some. Weeks before Christmas the work
force was taken off the project in Norden in order to do work in
Heywood. Norden was left for weeks with nowhere to stop, let alone
park. So we lobbied the council and the water board for
compensation and rate reduction.
After this the idea was to promote and raise awareness of Norden as
a place to visit and shop and NEEVA was set up. In the past we held
an auction to raise money for resurfacing Ashbourne Street and to
allow easier parking. £1500 was raised and the area was hard
packed with aggregate. But present day, it needs doing again. The
path at the back of the old library was cleaned up and chippings put
down. We raised money for hanging baskets on the lampposts and
the shops paid for their own, we campaigned for the crossing to be
made into a pelican and we held a demonstration of hanging baskets
in Moss Row for the residents. We put up brackets for Christmas trees
and flags on each of the businesses, held the first carol singing at the
old library which developed into the light switch on and the Christmas
market and we also contributed to the Carnival by encouraging the
businesses to do window displays. Finally we also raised money for
CCTV in the centre of the village.
NEEVA would like to welcome
new Chairman, Paul Ellison of
Evergreen Landscapes and
Friends of Norden Jubilee
Park, and Vice Chair,
Stephanie Hatch, manager at
Nordens Co-op. Lots to
still do in the village and our
work continue. We will continue to update you.
From the
archives
From the archives -
Rochdale’s Old Circus and
The Hippodrome
We have the Beatles to thank for fixing into the nation’s memory an old Rochdale theatre. The Sgt Pepper
LP records that ‘For the benefit of Mr. Kite, there will be a show tonight on trampoline,’ and that ‘The
Hendersons will all be there, late of Pablo Fanques Fair, what a scene!’ John Lennon saw these words on
an 1843 billboard promoting Rochdale’s Theatre Royal but it wasn’t the only Rochdale theatre at that time.
There were other 19th century venues in the town such as the London Music Hall on Drake Street, managed by W Jeffreye
and featuring greats like Dan Leno, or the Old Theatre at Waterside (near where the Town Hall is) working out of an old
Weslyan Chapel at which the great clown Grimaldi appeared on a stage lit by 4 tallow candles.
The Old Circus was, however, of specific note. Holding 2800 people it was a wooden building erected at Newgate behind
where the Post Office now stands, its shows advertised by billboards on horse-drawn carts. The architect was either
William Roberts or Messrs Edwards of Accrington, but a central figure in setting up his own circus on the site was Joe
Smith or ‘Ohmy,’ known sometimes as the ‘clog walloper,’ at other times as ‘Ohmy the Flyer.’ A horse circus operated
there in the early 1880’s after which an acrobat named Alvo erected a stage on which he ran his own shows. Alvo didn’t
last long though, as in 1886 Mr J Smith (the Lancashire steeplejack) along with Mr S L Lee (the licensee of the Kings
Head) and Mr Thomas Hargreaves (proprietor of the Empire Hall) bought the lease and re-set the stage at the Lord
Street end of the building, opening it up as their Circus of Varieties. Shows were twice nightly, admission prices being
Boxes and ‘Poets Corner’ 1/-, Promenade and Side Circle 6d and Gallery 3d (‘the Gods’). After 9.00pm admission was
half price which meant that there was often a disturbance due to a late rush to get in.
As well as entertainers such as
George Formby (senior and
junior), George Leybourne,
Little Tich, Charlie Chaplin and
Stan Laurel, early ‘flickers’
were shown such as Leslie’s
Animated Pictures or Pringles
Animated Photo Co featuring
‘North American’ and ‘War
in the Far East.’ Grace
Fields’ first stage
appearance was at the Old
Circus when she was 7
years old and she writes about the queues for the second
house being told by those coming out of the first ‘Don’t waste your brass seeing it !’
On the demolition of the Old Circus in 1908 a site-lease was taken up Ralph Pringle, a Huddersfield showman who
then moved his interest to the Old Empire in the Town Hall square and ran it as his own Picture Palace, the Old Circus
lease being transferred to James Jackson. Hundreds attended the last performance in the old wooden building including
boys from Buckley Hall Orphanage, every one of whom was given an orange. Auld Lang Syne was sung on stage at the
end and toasts proposed by the manager, Mr Stafford Grafton, to the New Hippodrome.
And the new brick building went up quickly, the foundation stones being laid within days ! By November 1908 ‘The
Hipp’ as Rochdale people called it, seating 1800, opened with 32 staff including uniformed doormen and page boys.
In the early years, ladies sold orange and lemon drops and when the audience didn’t like what they saw on stage they
threw pennies at the performers. Acts to appear in the 1930’s included Will Hay in his role as the headmaster, Fred
Karno’s Company of Comedians, George Leyton, a 16-year old Sandy Powell, Rob Wilton, Albert Modley, Kitty McShane
(old Mother Riley) and Norman Evans.
However, the Jackson family struggled to keep the Hippodrome going financially so they diversified and in the late
1930’s opened it as a cinema as well as running live shows and pantomimes.
After the World War II, Rochdale Corporation took ownership of the Hippodrome and, with declining audience numbers
and competition coming from television, the place was eventually run as a Bingo Hall until its demolition in 1970 to
make way for the New Crown Buildings, a sad end to what had been a great Rochdale institution.
If you have any memories, stories or photographs of The Hippodrome or the Old Circus, I’d be delighted
to hear from you and add them to a growing Rochdale archive on the subject. Please contact Gary Heywood-
Everett at garyheywoodeverett@yahoo.co.uk or leave your memories at 07745 201263
THE FRIENDS OF
ASHWORTH VALLEY
Yet again another busy month for The Friends of Ashworth Valley.
On a very cold morning, we 'roped in' the services of one acting fireman and 3 of his
retired ex colleagues, who using their rope skills to recover a settee, armchair and
mattress from down a very steep slope.
Many thanks to Councillors Gartside and Winkler for giving up their time on a busy
Saturday morning, for supporting and giving our team of volunteers a boost while they
had a massive clear up of over 30 bags of assorted debris from a steep embankment and
bog.
Thank you to RBC and Township for the prompt installation of our three new vermin
proof litter bins. Two are replacements for the old open top bins and one new one placed
by the Scout Camp as requested.
The Friends Group has been campaigning to raise awareness
to dog owners via our Facebook page which reached over
23,000 posts.
Keep your dogs under control and on a lead around livestock
especially at this time of year when ewes are heavily
pregnant, they can easily abort. Several sheep have already
been worried in the area. Do not run the risk of having
your dog shot!
If you would like to get involved or join our group,
you can contact us via Facebook or e mail our
Ridd Pitt, Ashworth Road
Ridd was first recorded in 1816 as part of the Ashworth Colliery and Ridd Pit on Ashworth Road
had a 200 foot deep shaft with winding gear operated by a steam engine.
It was claimed that tenants on Moss Row, a terrace of 41 houses in Norden and over a mile away from the pit head, could hear
miners cutting coal in seams below their homes.
Back in the 1800's children from around the age of 8 were employed as drawers as well as to push wagons along tunnels, open
and close ventilation doors and very often in complete darkness.
The Miners Act in 1842 prohibited the employment of women and children under the age of 10 from working underground, yet in
the 1861 census it clearly shows the Gaskill family living at Ridd which comprised of ten people
Chimney at Ridd Pitt
living in a one up, one down, back to back pit cottage.
It lists John Gaskill aged 43 as a collier, his wife Mary aged 32 and
their eight children, five of these who were boys working in the mine,
the youngest being Edward aged nine who was employed as a drawer
even though the Act was in place.
Conditions must have been appalling as we found this quote from a boy,
who started work at Ridd Pit at the age of twelve in the 1800,
"It was probably about six or seven in the morning when I went down
in the cage with the pitmen, it was like going down a waterfall. When
the men got out at the bottom of the shaft, the water was up to their
knees and as a child up to my chest. I was terrified by this and the
total darkness I could not carry on and returned to the surface never to
go down the pit again"
No surprise that the pit closed in 1897 due to flooding. In the 1950's
a borehole was sunk into the flooded workings and the pit capped.
The pit chimney was demolished in the early 1970's.
A HIDDEN GEM
Did you know there was a Crown Green Bowling Club at Cutgate? The club came into being circa
1931 and is situated on a private road at the top of Upper Passmonds Grove. A gate giving
access to the green is situated behind the shops at Cutgate Precinct.
The playing season is weather dependant from April
to October (seven days a week) and provides health
and social activities for members of the surrounding
communities along with gardening and keeping the
green and pavilions up to scratch (odd jobbers and
amateur gardeners more than welcome) providing
outdoor pleasure as well as the bowling.
We do not belong to a competitive league but provide
our own in house competitions throughout the season.
If you feel you would like to give it a try, bowls will be
made available to new members on loan.
The green has two pavilions providing tea, coffee and
biscuits along with the odd cake. Plus toilet with
wash hand basin. Along with the bowling we enjoy a
good social aspect i.e. meals out, quizzes and coffee
mornings during the winter
A few of our members are keen amateur gardeners
and the green looks magnificent during the bowling
season. However we do need more members to
boost our little club and to help with its continued
success. We are a friendly group and you will be
made very welcome so please come along any
afternoon between 1.30 pm and 2 pm.
OPENING DAY – SATURDAY 1ST APRIL
Save Bamford Green
Belt Action Group
On Saturday 25th February, two members of the committee,
Angela Smith, Chair, and Natalie Webster, a Chartered Town
Planner, attended a meeting organised by the Milnrow and
Newhey Action Group held at the Friends` Meeting House in
Manchester. This was an opportunity to meet three of the candidates for
Greater Manchester Mayor. They were: Jane Brophy (Liberal Democrat), Andy
Burnham (Labour) and Sean Anstee (Conservative). Each Action Group from
across Greater Manchester had submitted questions, which were collated by the
Milnrow and Newhey group.
It was reassuring to hear
that each candidate was
committed to preserving the
Green Belt as far as
possible, although none of
them made any promises.
Following the meeting all the
groups had an opportunity to
meet together and to
discuss strategies for
opposing the developments.
A Greater Manchester group
has been formed and this
group is organising a Protest
Rally in Manchester on
Saturday 1st April and we
are hoping that as many
Bamford/Norden residents as possible
will turn up for this.
As for the Bamford group, we are
holding a fundraising and information
event on Saturday 8th April at
Bamford Chapel and Norden URC.
This is a coffee and cake morning,
along with a raffle and Easter Egg
tombola. Again, we hope you will
support this very worthwhile event..
Should the draft proposals go
ahead, we will need to engage a
Barrister to go forward to a Public
Enquiry. This will cost an enormous
amount of money. In addition to
supporting fundraising events, we
may, in the future be asking for a
firmer commitment and a monthly
donation towards the cost of legal
expenses. Look out for further details
about this in forthcoming issues of
Streetwise.
We look forward to seeing you at the
April events.
THE IMPORTANCE OF
LOOKING AFTER YOUR TEETH
I remember a poem by Pam Ayres “You’ve got to look after your teeth”. It was amusing but I
always took it seriously – I was always rather a nerdy child - and did take care of my pearly
whites. They are not quite so pearly now but I do only have one filling up to this moment (I’m
touching wood) and now supervise my grandchildren very strictly. Those tooth brushes that
play music for two minutes are fantastic and I wish I could find one for grownups.
Unfortunately not everyone does take care
of their teeth, and not everyone ensures
their children do the twice daily brushing
and avoid sugar and fizzy drinks. In a way
this haunts me as a ‘Golden Grin’ for our
children is easy to achieve and a disaster to
neglect.
Rochdale has a terrible reputation for caries
(bad teeth) in very young children and,
literally, when the rot sets in it is almost
impossible to save these very important
first, tiny teeth. We have many children
under five who have extractions, sometimes
the whole mouth full, because their teeth
are so rotten so I was really pleased when I was asked to chair a small committee of Councillors for a Task and Finish Group to
see if we could improve this dire situation. And this is what we did.
First of all we organised payment for every Rochdale mother giving birth at Oldham hospital so they would be presented with a
pack of appropriate teeth toiletries for very young babies. Start as you mean to go on. It was not expensive and now Public
Health have agreed to provide this money annually as they thought it was such a good promotion.
Then we looked at primary school children cleaning their teeth at school. The dentist who supported our Group was very happy
with this as he said that it was important that the children have at least one brush with fluoride a day. We managed to get a few
schools to participate and the children really enjoy it. It is catching on. Mostly this cleaning takes place after the lunch time break
and the teachers in one school told me that it only takes a minute or so and relaxes the children after their rushing around in the
playground.
Thirdly we looked at getting a ‘buddy’ scheme organised and having dentist visit some of the schools in pilot areas. With the
parents’ permission the dentist goes into the schools in the scheme and sees one class each time, inspects the teeth and, if
appropriate, gives the teeth a quick coat of fluoride. It has spread to other schools and it has encouraged parents to find a
dentist for their children if they have not already done so.
This is a good start to arrest the decay in the teeth of our children and, although I am sure you do all that is necessary for the
teeth of your own children, it is obvious that not everyone in the Borough does so. So let us all buy a musical tooth brush for our
little ones and go to bed with songs ringing in our ears and the satisfaction of knowing that they will all grow up with a ‘Golden
Grin.
Norden’s Great British Spring Clean
There was a great turnout on Saturday 4th March for Norden Jubilee Park’s Great British Spring
Clean with approximately 25 volunteers turning up. Volunteers included members of the
Rochdale In Bloom team as well as two youngsters who are completing their Duke of Edinburgh
Award and are being mentored by Paul Ellison.
WE WOULD ALSO URGE DOG OWNERS TO PICK UP AND BIN THEIR DOG
FOULING. IT IS SIMPLY NOT ACCEPTABLE TO LEAVE IT ON THE PAVEMENT OR
GRASS AND EVEN WORSE TO LEAVE IT HANGING FROM TREE BRANCHES IN
BLACK BAGS. DOG OWNERS, WHO OFFEND, WILL BE CAUGHT AND FINED!
Paul Ellison – Organiser and Chairman of the Friends of Norden Jubilee Park
We covered certain areas in the village, including
Norden Jubilee Park, St Paul's Parish Hall, Greenbooth
Road and behind Ashborne Nursing Home. The Mayor
and Mayoress turned up to show support and all
volunteers were treated to a bacon buttie at Catherine's
Cafe.
It was great to see so many volunteers turning up to lend
a hand and Norden is certainly much cleaner and litter
free now. We collected approximately 60 bags of rubbish
and other larger items. I would like to show my
appreciation and a huge thank you to everybody
involved on the day!
We would also like to thank Councillor Michael Holly and
Councillor Peter Winkler for their continuing support.
Let's work together to Norden litter free, and remember,
litter isn't just for a day, it’s an ongoing battle. If you
see any please
pick it up and
bin it.
Why have I seen a Cross on Knowl Hill?
When you see a large upright cross what do you think? Today, the majority of people, I suspect, would say “Oh it’s
a memorial!” if they think about it at all; for there seem to be crosses everywhere and we no longer notice them.
But why are there so many? For nearly 2000 years the cross has been the main Christian symbol – reminding us
that Jesus died on a cross – and if you enter a Catholic Church you will see a cross with a representation of Jesus
hanging on it.
But that is terrible! - Not that we should have these symbols
of violence and torture on display – but that we are not
shocked or disgusted by them! The ancient Romans invented
crucifixion (killing people on a cross) as the most prolonged
and painful form of death - both punishment and deterrent.
So traitors and criminals were brutally dispatched in this way.
On the Sunday before Easter this year, as they have for most
of the past 16 years, members of local churches in North West
Rochdale will carry a Cross to the top of Knowl Hill and leave it
there for the Easter period.
Hill carrying a cross, or look to the hill afterwards and make
out a cross on the summit, then you may wish to say a quiet
prayer to ask for forgiveness and peace in Jesus’ name.
If you’d like to join in carrying the cross, we leave St Vincent’s
at 2:00pm and/or Owd Betts at 3:00pm – but do check with
your local church that it is still on and for other details.
The Cross came in as a symbol of God’s love for us in this
world, and as a confident sign that we will be resurrected with
Jesus in the next, which is why it’s present on graves and
memorials. And if you have a cross as piece of jewellery, then
let this outrageous symbol of torture remind you that God
loves you more than you can imagine.
May you and your families have peace this Easter.
While they do this they recall the central belief of the Christian
faith, that Jesus Christ, though innocent, was condemned to
death and carried his cross to the place of execution where he
was nailed to it and left to die. The good news is Jesus, fully
human, was also God and rose from the dead on the day we
celebrate as Easter.
From Churches Together in NW Rochdale
St Clement’s, St George’s, St James’, St Michael’s, St
Paul’s Church of England
Spotland& Norden Methodists, Cutgate Baptists,
Bamford & Norden URC, & St Vincent de Paul RC.
Now Christians everywhere believe that God loves each person
so much, that in Jesus He carried all the bad things each one
of us has ever done or will do and freed us of the guilt and
shame. It’s not automatic, but it is free! We just need to
repent and ask God for His forgiveness and be open to His
love.
So when on Palm Sunday (April 9th this year) you see a small
group of Christians walking through Norden, or up on Knowl
will also be a trade support from several Model Railway suppliers. There will also be
Refreshments will be available from the Town Hall restaurant throughout the event.
The Heywood Model Railway Group has been in existence for some 60 years.
During this period it has held annual exhibition at several venues throughout the
North West. We have also had to relocate our clubroom on several occasions during
this period. We have spent considerable amounts of money from the club funds
creating new premises only to be forced to move through our landlords becoming
insolvent or as in the latest case the premises being purchased by a Chinese
consortium for conversion into a retail hub.
The owner of our current headquarters came to our rescue three years ago and offered
us a large derelict workshop (he had a model railway shop in Drake Street many
years ago). A rent was agreed and many members including electricians, plumbers,
joiners and a builder set to work over a 12 Month period making it habitable.
We are now in a position to hold a Monthly open day each second Saturday where
members of the public can visit free of charge and bring their own stock to run on
our large layouts or even run Thomas The Tank Engine which has appeared at
several charitable events over the years.
Anyone can visit the club on a Monday Evening 6pm to 10pm or on a Wednesday
between 10 am to 3pm and see if joining the club is to their advantage.
All details of the club can be found on our excellent website at www.hmrg.co.uk.
Details of who to contact by email and a map of how to find us are on the website.
We are in the process of erecting some signage on the PAD Printers building behind
the Brown Cow public house on Bamford Road to assist in locating us.
40 years of Norden Carnival!
1977-2017 – 17th June 2017
Can it really have been that long? What a milestone – and it’s all thanks to you in our community
that continues to support the event year on year. So whatever you’re doing and no matter how
long you’ve supported the Carnival – a HUGE THANK YOU – from all the organisers. So, how do we
mark this special occasion? We decided it seemed only fair to let you choose the theme – that’s right – this year you can come as
any theme over the last 40 years. Hark back to the early days when local businesses would display their goods or pick something
more recent – we’ve had Favourite Books, Music through the decades, circus, movies and so many more.
Once again there’ll be plenty of stalls on the day – and it falling just before Father’s Day, an ideal time to get dad a gift (or just
something for yourself). There’s still time to book a stall – just email the address below. The parade starts at 1pm from Caldershaw
School and goes all the way through the village where it’ll turn around at Jubilee Park and then back to Norden School. There’ll be
more entertainment, music, rides and plenty of ice cream.
Anyone wishing to enter a float can do so by emailing nordencarnival@sky.com – there’s no entry charge and we give a small
donation to any charity or community group. Our twitter followers has increased again this year and you’ll be able to fund update
there and on Facebook. We look forward to seeing you on 17th June!
New Project Underway to
Preserve Norden’s Rich Heritage
In a previous issue was pleased to report back to residents on a long but ultimately successful campaign to save
the historic mill chimney at Black Pits. With the help of the area forum and the support of many residents I was
able to negotiate a restoration scheme that has both restored and preserved this iconic landmark.
Saving the chimney was just one battle but it made me stop and think about all the other important built heritage that makes our
village so special, and how easily it could be lost without proper protection. That is why, with the help of the heritage specialists
at Rochdale Council, The Norden History Group and the Countryside Rangers, I have set up the Norden Heritage Project.
The aim of the project is to identify significant heritage features within the village, restore them if needed, and put the protection
in place to preserve them for future generations. One of the first things will be to expand on the area around the chimney, along
Moss Row and into Naden Valley to create the ‘Norden Woodland Heritage Trail’. We have already begun planting trees along
Moss Row and have some great plans for further
development of the area so that it can be enjoyed by
more people for generations to come.
This is just the start though. Norden has a rich history
and we have a lot of very knowledgeable people in
the village who can recount stories of long forgotten
paths, landmarks and points of interest, so I am keen
to hear from anyone who has suggestions for what
could be next. Information about the project and how
to get involved can be found on the village website at:
www.nordenvillage.co.uk. So please get in touch with
Moss Row 1955
your suggestions and keep watching the village
website for regular project updates.
Scout Moor-
A Moor In Need Of Friends
Scour Moor is a vital part of our local landscape, the wild and unspoilt terrain is a vital green lung
for people from all over Rochdale and beyond. There are a number of regular user groups including
walkers, horse rider, cyclists, runners and para gliders for whom the Moor is essential for the
pursuit of their pass times.
We are very fortunate that a number of residents in the area feel so strongly about the state of the environment of the Moor by
undertaking regular litter patrols on the approaches to the area. They tidy up accesses and make it more inviting to visitors from
near and far. I am sure we all applaud their selfless efforts and residents have been supported in their efforts by the staff of the
Environmental Management Department at Rochdale Council.
In stark contrast to the above is the increasing use of Scout Moor over recent years for unauthorised trials bike riding and 4x4 driving.
These activities have contributed to very significant degradation of large segments of the peat moorland in this area and the
destruction of the amenity of the Moor for legitimate users. This, in itself, is a serious and significant problem which has meant that
Greater Manchester Police have had to use scarce resources to address the issue. GMP Officers have recently had to use increasing
firm measures to deal with this anti-social behaviour.
As a significant and responsible land owner on Scout Moor, United Utilities has consistently deployed significant financial and other
resources to support legitimate users of the space and the initiatives of GMP to rid the area of nuisance users. United Utilities are
not the only major landowner on the Moor, the others are more reluctant to deploy their assets to support local initiatives. Imagine
how much could be achieved if a genuine partnership could be formed between all major owners on the more, Local residents and
Greater Manchester Police?
Cutgate Playgroup Clean Up
On Friday 4th March children from Cutgate
Playgroup took part in the Great British
Spring Clean. Supported by staff, parents
and Councillor Peter Winkler, they set out
to tidy their local play area in Caldershaw.
The group made their way through the streets and across
Heritage Green, collecting several bags of rubbish along
the way, before enjoying play time in the park. Councillor
Winkler said: “Even though these are some of our
youngest residents that did an amazing job and set a
brilliant example. The result was several bags of rubbish
collected from our streets and verges. Thanks to all the
parents who made a special effort to come along and
make the clean-up possible.”
