Turn right at this junction over the Metrolink Bridge and onto A663 Shaw Road where the
Piethorne Brook enters the River Beal. Turn left and follow Shaw Road up to the Milnrow/Shaw
boundary. Look out for the ancient B C boundary stones in the walls either side of the road.
These denote the boundary between Butterworth (the original parish now comprising Newhey
and Milnrow) and Crompton (now Shaw).
Continue along the A663 (now Milnrow Road) parallel with the River Beal over the wall on the
left. Here one often sees a Dipper hopping along the river, or an occasional heron.
Turn left over the river footbridge and cross the Metrolink line on the unmanned level crossing.
Take great care at this crossing; be alert, look and listen, as trams pass from both directions and
are very quiet, frequent and travel at fast speed!
Safely over the crossing brings you into the Old Jubilee Colliery heritage site; currently being
restored by a Volunteer Group as a Nature Reserve and a site of historical archaeological interest
It is worth spending time here to see the
conservation work that has enhanced what was a
derelict site, making it an attractive feature and
important wild life haven. There are pathways
through the deciduous woodland where bluebells
and wild garlic flower in spring. Peter, Marilyn and
any of the Volunteer Team are always happy to
explain the history and show visitors around the site.
Emerging from the Colliery adjacent to the Jubilee Pub (now closed) continue along the A663
Milnrow Road, cross over to the right and take the road bridge over the River Beal again and go
down Dunwood Park Court. This emerges on Railway Street,
turn right and go over the Metrolink footbridge and into
Dunwood Park.ere
Again spend time in Dunwood Park, there is much to see and
do; bowling green, tennis courts, children's play park, cafe and
picnic areas, as well as numerous paths through the woods.
Following the main path through the park, parallel with the Metrolink line and River Beal,
emerges at the Jubilee bends of the A663. Continue along this main road back into Newhey, past the bus terminus and
Huddersfield Road junction, and bear right at Newhey road past the Memorial Park and on to the Library, completing a 4 mile
walk.
The Walk and Talk Group meet at Milnrow Library for different 60 to 90 minute walks every Monday leaving the Library at 10am.
It is free, friendly and everyone is welcome.
