BJORK
POST
Revolutionary at the
time, Björk’s album Post
is filled with curious
sounds sung with
flamboyant flair. The
music, coupled with
her carefully enunciated
words and mesmerising
vocals, offers an escape
to sensational theatrical
fantasy. In the 90s,
it offered something
different to the
mundane alternative
rock selection available
at the time with hit
songs like ‘Hyperballad’
and ‘It’s Oh So Quiet’
still playing in dance
clubs as a mark of her
legacy on the scene till
today.
JAKOB BRO
GEFION
Gefion is an album by
guitarist Jakob Bro,
accompanied by bassist
Thomas Morgan
and drummer Jon
Christensen. The trio
produces semblances of
folk melodies through a
series of slow rhythms,
making listeners focus
on the intersections of
sounds and space. The
layers of Bro’s melodic
frame, Morgan’s
harmony through
deliberate long-spaced
underscores and
Christensen’s relaxed
textural cymbal produce
an extraordinary
musical experience for
listeners.
THE KNIFE
SHAKING THE
HABITUAL
Shaking the Habitual by
Karin Dreijer Andersson
and her brother, Olof
Dreijer, is one of the
most accomplished
album releases by
the duo. Topics like
politics, desires, gender
roles and intellectual
stimulation are
astonishingly expressed
in hypnotising,
experimental music.
The polarising play on
soothing and seething
music expressions,
each reflecting on
real life struggles,
are stimulating and
agonising at the
same time.
Our Pick...
JAN GARBAREK
RITES
Widely acclaimed
as one of the best
saxophonists still
performing, Jan
Garbarek’s album
Rites, featuring chantlike
melodies and
picked up by a myriad of up-tempo instruments,
is one of his best works. Divided into two discs,
the first explores deep, entrenched warm tones
that touch emotions and sends listeners into a
reflective mood. The second disc is more upbeat;
though it still retains the chanting, spiritual
style, it carries more celebratory overtones.
His trademark saxophone lifted by a myriad of
instruments creates a tranquil ambience.
