JOSHUA TREENIAL EVENT HORIZON 2017 

The second year of the JOSHUA 

TREENIAL - EVENT HORIZON was held 

this weekend. This event participates in 

the Desert X project, to bring the arts to 

the desert. The Joshua Tree event involves 

about two dozen artists, and others who 

collaborate with them, many of them from 

the desert. 

Much of this event can be credited to Bernard 

Leibov, who was featured in an article 

in this column on March 10. To reiterate, 

the even brings together artists with a 

world view, who,” make the art they want 

to make”, while making statements about 

broad social, environmental and economic 

issues. 

The main residence was a gallery of work 

that previous artists in residence had created. 

Drawings, photography and other 

works depicting the artists involvement 

with the desert was evident. 

Overall, the Joshua Treenial event was one 

of immersion and participation for people 

who attended the event. It was inspiring, 

thought provoking and interactive. We 

look forward to the next event and to other 

artists who will be participating in the 

future.

While attending the opening event at BoxoHOUSE, 

Leibov’s residence, and location 

of casitas where visiting artists spend a 

residency creating art, we viewed and 

participated in some of the broad spectra 

of art that is characteristic of the event. 

For example, one artist was involved in 

projecting images on a rock cliff behind 

BoxoHOUSE. The images were a variety 

of shapes and colors that illuminated the 

large rock cliff about 30 feet high and 50 

feet wide. Additionally, there were a variety 

of installations throughout the landscape 

surrounding the residence. Some were 

architectural structures, such as a walkthrough 

geodesic dome framework where 

the desert landscape could be viewed from 

all side. Another work involved a ladder 

type structure on which a canteen dispenser 

contained wine and plastic glasses in 

which participants could partake. There 

was a large ball of ice hanging in a tee-pee 

like structure where the melting of the ice 

was part of the evolving work.

its final performance of the 2016-17 season 

with “Friends in Song,” a fundraising recital, 

Sunday, April 9 at 3:00p.m. This spring 

event is always filled with talented soloists, 

intriguing duets and their small ensemble 

The SWEETHOTS, who will deliver 

rousing songs to both open and close the 

program. This wonderful afternoon of song 

includes the varied talents of chorale members 

and special guest artists accompanied 

by piano, flute and viola. 

“We are thrilled to close out another successful 

California Desert Chorale season 

with our “Friends in Song” fundraiser, 

which provides the community a glimpse 

of our gifted singers in a relaxed setting.

JERSEY’S JOURNAL by jersey Shore 

In Greek and Roman mythology, a muse is 

one of nine goddesses, daughters of Zeus 

and Mnemosyne, who preside over the arts 

and sciences. A person or personified force 

that is the inspiration for a creative artist. 

They are Calliope, Clio, Euterpe, Erato, 

Melpomene, Terpsichore, Polyhymnia, 

Urania, Thalia. If you saw the movie Xanadu, 

you’d probably get a better basic picture. 

I grew up with Xanadu and ONJ. Miss 

Olivia Newton-John. It’s most definitely 

because of this movie that I truly believe 

in Muses. Or the Muse effect. We have to 

get inspiration from somewhere. How do 

you not know that new person you just met 

was to help you get inspired to follow your 

dreams and make them happen. 

Muses Inspire people, and I feel like I am 

usually the one doing the inspiring, and 

not getting inspiration. I’m in a creative 

funk right now. Where is my Muse to 

sign the Co-loan application on my roller 

disco!? 

I don’t need to tell you the importance of 

the arts. Creativity if life to me. Without 

creativity I would wither away and die. 

When I said I was in a funk I was referring 

to the lack of joy for entertaining. Even the 

best get stuck in a rut. We are human. Ruts 

are sticky. We can pull ourselves out, or my 

some cosmic energy we get help from the 

inspiration department. Someone or something 

comes along and reminds you why 

you are creative, or how to be creative, or 

how to be creative properly. 

It’s basically, help digging yourself outta 

that hole, but in the best way. When I am 

inspired, I am at my happiest. Creativity 

is my drug. After “Medical” Marijuana 

of course. Marijuana is like a muse to me 

sometimes. I get my best Ideas while high. 

So, whatever inspires you, think of it as a 

gift from the Universe. It could be Olivia 

Newton-John is a different form. Always 

question if they are wearing roller skates.

THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis 

I am In Thailand traveling with Rotary International 

researching water purification projects 

in various parts of the country, to see how 

Rotary might be able to be of assistance. I with 

4 others; a professor at La Sierra University, a 

retired employee of Metropolitan Water District 

and a couple that owns a company that 

makes filtration systems. 

I have never travelled in this part of Asia and 

am looking forward to an interesting trip, 

learning a lot and trying to get over my aversion 

to spicy food! LOL 

We will be in northeast Thailand, a remote 

island and Bangkok. So the experience will be 

varied. I will stay out of the “candy stores” 

There has been a high rate of STD’s and HIV 

here due to the sex trade. It has been interesting 

to see all the publications openly discussing 

this and warning tourists so That is 

a good thing. Sadly we all know Americans 

don’t listen. 

In our country the Prez continues on his roll. 

Now putting his daughter and son--in-law 

in significant positions. Can you imagine if 

President Hillary had done that with Chelsea! 

OMG. I guess the rules and ethics don’t apply 

to the entire Republican Party hierarchy and 

structure now. Sad to see how the party of 

Theodore Roosevelt has fallen. 

Trump aides already seeking immunity from 

prosecution and they haven’t been in office 4 

months. God help us all. 

Next week I’ll report more on Thailand and 

how the people here view us. So far they have 

been extraordinarily friendly! 

Until then keep resisting!
